Minnesota native and former pro golfer Tom Lehman unveils new golf course design

Tom Lehman is in Brainerd, Minnesota — about an hour and a half from where he grew up and still spends his summers. "Alexandria is a tremendous town. Always has been," said Lehman. "It's growing and it's vibrant. I'm really proud of where I grew up. And I'm so happy to be still connected, spending summers there." On this day, Lehman hits a ceremonial tee shot from the deck at Cragun's Legacy Courses, Lehman's design. "I've always loved architecture," said Lehman. "I would design courses as a kid." This has been a big project. It's over two full golf courses. This new and final "Red Nine" is half of what will be used for next month's PGA Tour Americas tournament. "Forty-five holes of golf. Three and a half years of work. It's very gratifying to see it open and see it in such great condition," said Lehman. "People enjoy playing it. It's fun. It makes me feel good." Lehman is Minnesota's most accomplished golfer, with five PGA Tour wins. He's a local who stayed home and played at the University of Minnesota before his PGA Tour career, but he knows the game has changed. "The good kids from Minnesota all go south, it seems now," said Lehman. "Used to be able to keep a lot of kids home and let them play for the Gophers or wherever, but it's just very difficult now to do that, even with the ability to travel and participate and play in the wintertime." On this Open Championship week, Lehman can look back to when he won it 29 years ago. "It's tradition to let the crowd run ahead. They kind of get a big group around the 18th green," Lehman remembered. "You've gotta kind of fight your way through the crowd. And this guy's name was Kevin, he wrapped one arm around me from behind and swatted people out of the way up in front. Finally, we got through the crowd to the green and he says, 'Hey Tom, we've been through a lot of crap together this week, but now you're on your own,' and pushed me forward onto the green. I'll never forget that moment."

Highly ranked Minnesota golf club adds second course with a nod to classic architecture

Windsong Farm Golf Club – now the only private club in Minnesota with two full 18-hole courses – this month officially opened its second layout, the North Course. The new course was designed by former PGA Tour player and architect John Fought, who also designed the club's South Course in partnership with Tom Lehman. The North Course in Independence, Minnesota – about a 30-minute drive west of Minneapolis – was built with an emphasis on fun shots and with views of nearby Fox Lake and surrounding horse pastures. While the club's South Course stretches to more than 7,500 yards, the North tops out just shy of 6,500 yards with a par of 70. The new course sits on a tidy 125 acres versus the South's 220. The South is ranked by Golfweek's Best as the No. 6 private course in Minnesota, and it ties for No. 149 among all modern courses in the United States. The new North features fresh takes on several classic template holes such as an Eden green, a Biarritz, a Dell, a Redan and a Cape. Most of the bunkers are rectangular with grass faces, and fairways are wide as they play past wispy fescue. With greens placed close to the following tees, it's a very walkable course. 'You wouldn't know the same person designed both of these courses,' Fought said in a media release announcing the North's opening. 'The North looks like a golf course that came from the early 1900s. It's on a very small piece of land, and I wanted to prove to people that length isn't the only way to add drama to a golf course. 'This course is going to force you to think. You can't just get up and hammer it. You'll have to think, 'Do I want to hit driver here?' Some of the greens are tiny, and others are huge. The Biarritz green at No. 4 is 17,000 square feet, where a normal green is 6,000. And I think golfers will use every club on the par 3s. We configured it to create the most diversity you can get on a golf course.'

Violent storm hits Wichita golf course set to host Korn Ferry Tour event this week

Mother Nature was a nuisance all weekend at the U.S. Open in Oakmont, but a much more dangerous version struck a different golf event early Tuesday morning. A violent storm seems to have significantly damaged Crestview Country Club and much of the Korn Ferry Tour's infrastructure set up for the 2025 Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Wichita Open, which is scheduled to begin Thursday. Advertisement The storm system — which produced winds stronger than 100mph — knocked down trees and caused widespread power outages across Wichita and the surrounding area, according to KWCH in Kansas. Crestview Country Club has hosted this event every year since 2001. Tom Lehman won the inaugural Wichita Open in 1990, and the tournament has served as a launching pad for several stellar PGA Tour careers, with other past champions like David Duval (1993), Jason Dufner (2001) and Scott Piercy (2008). Taylor Dickson won the 2024 Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Wichita Open. Editor's note: This story's headline had a typo that has been corrected. Golfweek regrets the error.
