New Jersey School District That Threatened Bankruptcy Has Rating Cut
The Toms River Regional School District had its bond rating slashed two notches by S&P Global Ratings after local officials discussed filing for bankruptcy instead of adopting a budget that would have raised taxes. The rating company cut the local board of education's grade to A from AA- and placed the credit under review for a possible further downgrade, according to a release late Tuesday.

Mark Leiter Jr. injury: Yankees place reliever on IL with stress fracture in leg
NEW YORK – A beat-up and challenged Yankees bullpen just received another tough break. Before Tuesday's game against the Seattle Mariners, right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. landed on the 15-day injury list due to a stress fracture in his left leg. Advertisement Still in a fact-finding position regarding what 'I think is (a) fairly rare'' injury, Leiter said he's 'not really sure of the timetable'' for returning to action. Leiter said the trouble occurred exactly two weeks ago, when he lost a foot race to the Reds' speedy Elly De La Cruz while covering first base during a June 24 play at Cincinnati. During the play, Leiter described feeling something 'pop'' in his leg, which he initially thought was a calf issue. After two days of treatment, Leiter felt he was 'definitely trending in a positive way'' and was not bothered pitching with the condition until Saturday, when he experienced discomfort warming up. Advertisement The problem grew worse on Sunday, when he pitched two-thirds of an inning at Citi Field, walking a batter and hitting a batter in a 6-4 win against the Mets. '(That's when) I felt compromised for the first time (on the mound),'' said Leiter, a Toms River native, with 4.46 ERA and two saves, with 46 strikeouts in 34.2 innings this year. Leiter went for medical testing, including an MRI on Monday and Tuesday, revealing what the club described as a left fibular head stress fracture. 'Hopefully, this is something we can get hammered out and get him back to throwing as well as he was the first couple months of the season,'' said manager Aaron Boone. Advertisement 'Mark's a guy we've leaned on a lot,'' with 41 appearances, more than any Yankee reliever this year except lefty Tim Hill. Before Tuesday's game against Seattle, the Yanks recalled righty Clayton Beeter. Valuable reliever Fernando Cruz (oblique strain) hit the IL on June 30 and might not return until September. Key setup men Jonathan Loaisiga and Luke Weaver have been shaky lately, and Devin Williams was restored to the closer's role in June after a brutal April. Meanwhile, with starter Clarke Schmidt expected to undergo Tommy John surgery, rookie right-hander Cam Schlittler is scheduled to make his MLB debut start Wednesday against Seattle. Advertisement And with Leiter out of the bullpen mix for an unspecified time, it 'creates an opportunity'' for someone 'to step up and secure'' a role, said Boone. But the Yankees could be aggressive in seeking relief help before the July 31 MLB trade deadline. This article originally appeared on Mark Leiter Jr. injury: Yankees pitcher to IL with leg fracture

Toms River man stabbed in deadly fight charged with firing gun during struggle
A man who was stabbed in a Toms River home in May in a fight that left another man dead has been charged with weapons offenses for firing a handgun during the deadly clash, authorities said. Roderick Seward, 30, of Toms River, was taken to Ocean County Jail Tuesday following his arrest where he remains pending a detention hearing, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said in a statement. Following the bloodshed on the 3400 block of Adams Avenue that took place about 7 a.m. on May 9, Seward was initially charged with cocaine possession, after police found the drug in his backpack at the scene, Billhimer said. Meanwhile, Steven McNeill, 32, of Jackson, the man accused of the stabbings that left Raniek Mendez, 34, of Brick, dead, remains at the jail pending trial. Police said Mendez was stabbed while trying to break up the fight. McNeill has been charged with murder, attempted murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon by a convicted person and eluding. At McNeil's detention hearing at the end of May, his defense attorney claimed that McNeil acted in self defense. Superior Court Judge Wendel E. Daniels rejected that claim. Toms River police officers went to the same Adams Avenue home at 5:50 a.m. that day, an hour before the stabbings, in response to a 911 call about a fight between McNeill and Seward, Billhimer said. After McNeil left the home, the police cleared the scene. Toms River officers returned to the home an hour and a half later after an off-duty Seaside Park Class II officer leaving a nearby convenince store called 911 at 7:20 a.m., reporting that there was a fight at the home. The officers found Mendez with stab wounds to the chest. He was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River where he died of his injuries. Investigators discovered that Seward was also stabbed in the fight. He was taken to Ocean University Medical Center in Brick by a family member for injuries that were not life-threatening, Billhimer said. Detectives recovered a single shell casing at the scene. They determined that Seward fired the weapon, Billhimer said. Investigators also found that a vehicle had fled the scene of the stabbings. Toms River police found McNeill behind the wheel of it in Jackson. He was arrested after he initially refused to pull over, Billhimer said. Ken Serrano covers crime, breaking news and investigations. Jersey Shore School Threatens Bankruptcy Over Property Tax Spat
