Two people, including a deputy, stuck by vehicles in Augusta over weekend

Two people, including a Richmond County sheriff's deputy, were struck by vehicles this past weekend in Augusta. Deputy Jeff Adams was hit at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday outside Augusta Mall while trying to stop a fleeing shoplifting suspect, according to an email from the sheriff's office. A woman previously banned from the mall for shoplifting was spotted at the shopping center on Saturday by security, who contact the sheriff's office, noted authorities. Adams responded and with a security guard tracked down the woman, identified as Toni Wallace, to a parking lot near Macy's. Adams held up his hand, gesturing for Wallace to stop as she tried to drive away in a Nissan Altima. Wallace then hit Adams, injuring his knee and wrist, as she fled. Deputies later found Wallace, who was arrested without further incident, noted the sheriff's office. Adams was treated for his injuries at Piedmont hospital. "He is expected to make a full recovery and remains in good spirits," noted the sheriff's office. Wallace was charged with aggravated assault upon a police officer, criminal trespass, and she might also get charged with shoplifting, noted authorities.
