Grafton preview, best bets, inside mail for Sunday, July 20, 2025

Trainer Tony Ball was unable to get a winner on the board over the two day Grafton carnival but he's hoping he can do so a few days later. Ball makes the trip north again from Taree to Grafton with three horses in the float, all of which he's got a good deal of confidence about. The most interesting of Ball's brigade comes up in the feature of the day with Xtra Approval getting a good drop in weight for the Maclean Cup (1400m). The six-year-old son of Xtravagant found the 60kg at Hawkesbury last start a touch too tough but drops way down to 55kg with apprentice hoop Shae Wilkes in the saddle. 'It's a nice race for him and he gets about 5kg off some of those horses in the race,' Ball said. The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'I thought he ran well at Hawkesbury the other day but just probably didn't appreciate the weight on a heavy track. 'So he now goes down to 55kg with Shae (Wilkes) utilising her claim and I'd expect him to be hard to beat.' Xtra Approval also finds his sweet spot at 1400m after running over the mile last time out. 'Getting back to 1400m probably suits him a bit too,' Ball said. 'He won a Kempsey Cup at the trip late last year and probably just found that mile a touch too far last start.' Earlier in the card will see three-year-old filly Felasuvi have her third run for the stable after starting her career off in Victoria with Leon and Troy Corstens. The daughter of Star Witness was eye catching at Coffs Harbour at her stable debut before finding a Class 1 a touch too tough at this track over the 1006m. She now steps up to 1100m in the second race on the card and goes from a good track but to a rain affected one. 'She gets a senior rider on this week with Siena not there so Matty (McGuren) goes on and that should be good for her,' Ball said. 'With the way the race looks to play out, she'll get the gun run from barrier four and get her chance. 'If she's good enough she'll win but if she's not, we'll just have to go back to the drawing board with her. 'But I'd expect her to go well and she's pulled up a treat from last Sunday so no issues with the seven day back up for her.' Thirty five minutes later will see Ball's bargain buy Where's The Fire look the break through for a win. The five-year-old gelding would be the best bred galloper going around at Grafton being by I Am Invincible and out of a Snitzel mare. 'It's not too often you get an I Am Invincible for $15,000,' Ball said. 'We got him about a year ago and he's been a handy little horse for us. 'I think he won at Grafton before I had him and he's had a few more runs at the track so he knows it well. 'With the drop in grade and Matty going on board, I reckon he'll run a good race. 'He should be nearing his top after two runs now this time in so hopefully he can break through for a win for us.' It's a capacity field for Where's The Fire's race with 16 acceptances including two emergencies for the 1100m contest. JETT HATTON'S TOP SELECTIONS BEST BET Race 1 No. 12: ARCHIE MAXIMUS Forgive his last start run at Coffs Harbour when nothing went his way. Well placed to bounce back. NEXT BEST Race 3 No. 5: LOVE RAT Never got a clear shot last start. With some luck he can bounce back. VALUE BET Race 5 No. 4: XTRA APPROVAL Good weight drop off his last start run at the provincials. Enjoys the drop back in trip too, QUADDIE Race 4: 1, 4 Race 5: 1, 2, 4 Race 6: 2, 6, 12 Race 7: 1, 2, 6, 10 Jockey Matthew McGuren will be popular in the Jockey Challenge with a strong book of rides. Picture: Greg Irvine, Magic Millions JOCKEY TO FOLLOW MATTHEW MCGUREN rides in all seven races on the card and has a couple winning chances. INSIDE MAIL - GRAFTON RACE 1: Andrew Tom Builder Pty Ltd Mdn Plate 1100m Be forgiving of the last start effort of ARCHIE MAXIMUS (12). Had some trouble at the start and on the heavy track, he couldn't get into it. Was also checked on the turn. Can bounce back here and break the maiden. JACOB'S WELL (1) comes out of three provincial maidens. First-up for the new stable and the blinkers come off. ZAINDARA (14) is the stablemate of Archie Maximus. The fact Matt McGuren is booked for that horse and the apprentice is on Zaindara is a lead. Bet: Archie Maximus to win. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RACE 2: Maclean Variety Meats (Bm58) 1100m WITH STYLE (3) has had one start for one win and it was at this track. She's now with Chris and Corey Munce and has looked good at her two trials leading into her first-up run. Tricky barrier but looks classy. MISS WATERLINE (2) ran at Eagle Farm last start. Was wide throughout and drawn out again here so will need some luck. SNOW FALCON (1) is going better than the formguide would suggest. Blinkers come off with the winkers applied. Bet: With Style to win. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RACE 3: Hooked On Seafood (Bm58) 1100m LOVE RAT (5) never got a clear shot at them last time out at Coffs Harbour in a decent race. Can position closer to the speed from barrier two and be in the finish. FULL REGALIA (9) can sprint well first-up from a spell. She's done so in the past and can do so again here. The easier race will suit WHERE'S THE FIRE (3) from Tony Ball's stable. Should be peaking third-up into his campaign. BUSH WARRIOR (12) goes into the numbers as well. Bet: Love Rat to win. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RACE 4: Maclean Hotel (Bm58) 3120m Not too often you see a 3120m race in country NSW. WILL TO EXCEL (1) isn't getting any younger as a nine-year-old but showed last start that he's in good form with a third at Mudgee. Drawn to do no work from the inside barrier. SMELTER (6) will handle the distance. Was a three length winner over 2450m at Beaudesert back in May 26. Bet: Will To Excel to win. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RACE 5: Maclean Bowling Club Maclean Cup 1400m XTRA APPROVAL (4) gets a nice weight drop off his last start run at Hawkesbury when up to 1600m. Will enjoy stepping back in trip to 1400m and he is drawn to get every chance from barrier six with Shae Wilkes on board. AFRICAN DAISY (2) is the proven horse here, given she's a last start winner at Rosehill. Has to carry the big weight but certainly has a class edge. MATTER OF HONOUR (1) has raced at Randwick his last five starts, so Grafton is certainly a change of scenery. WILD CHAP (3) is a Group 3 winner way back when. Needs to improve but finds an easier race. Bet: Xtra Approval each-way. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RACE 6: Gm Accounting Maclean Mdn Hcp 1700m Not the easiest race to dissect given the record of some of these horses. Thought FLEE WITH MEE (2) would appreciate the easy contest. She went close a few starts back and the booking of Matt McGuren suits for this race. Awkward barrier but think she's the best horse in the race. IMMORTELLE (6) should get the run of the race and so often in these open affairs, that's the winning factor. STAR OF KONGO (12) is a 21 start maiden but is knocking on the door for that fist win. Honest on pace effort off a six week freshen up last start and should only improve off that. Bet: Flee With Me to win. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RACE 7: Andrew Tom Builder Pty Ltd Mdn Plate 1100m MEGHAN (10) should get the run of the race from barrier four. She gets here in career best form and will appreciate the strong tempo that looks likely here. SHOWMAN (1) just missed last time out at Murwillumbah. Tricky barrier for Shae Wilkes to navigate but he's probably the best horse in this race. SPILLS (2) burnt petrol early last start and it told late. Can take a sit from a wide barrier today and turn in an improved effort. SECRET KEEPER (6) goes in the mix as well. Bet: Meghan each-way.

Jamie Oliver attacks Essex council for not recognising dyslexia as special need

The celebrity chef and campaigner Jamie Oliver said he is 'disgusted' by his native county of Essex for not formally recognising dyslexia as a special educational need. Discussing his new documentary on dyslexia, Oliver claimed that Essex county council did not want 'to spend the money' on those diagnosed with dyslexia, a neurological learning difficulty affecting reading and writing. 'I'm disgusted by my county of Essex,' Oliver told a panel including the education secretary, Bridget Phillipson, on Thursday. 'I come from Essex. I was born and bred in Essex and [went to school] in Essex … and they've decided to not recognise dyslexia. They don't recognise it, they don't see it. 'And my instinct is because once you recognise it and once you have a diagnosis on it, then because of the [Equality Act], you have to deploy resources as a human right. And I believe that Essex don't want to spend the money.' In the documentary, which airs on Channel 4 on Monday, Oliver says: 'I went through traditional schooling and it wasn't great. Everything to do with learning and getting it down on paper was terrible, I hated words. I had nothing to offer. That feeling of sadness, of feeling thick, stupid, worthless and dumb.' Tony Ball, Essex council's cabinet member for education, said: 'We welcome the focus Mr Oliver is bringing to this and want to make our approach clear: we want to make sure all children and young people get the help they need, rather than subcategorising into different groups for blanket solutions. 'We support what some people term dyslexia, and what others might call severe and persistent literacy difficulties, in the same way. We are committed to providing individual support to children and young people regardless of how their needs are described. 'Essex absolutely acknowledges and supports pupils with literacy difficulties, and we do this regardless of the term used to describe their needs – literacy difficulties, dyslexia or other.' The documentary, Jamie's Dyslexia Revolution, is Oliver's latest in more than 20 years of campaigning, including his crusade to improve school food in the 2004 series Jamie's School Dinners. In the documentary, Oliver calls on the government to carry out earlier screening of children for neurodiversity as well as improved training for teachers. Speaking to Phillipson, Oliver said: 'We need new systems and ways of allowing these [children], up to 25% of every class, to have the ability to show their genius.' Phillipson said that as part of the government's special educational needs (SEN) reforms for England, 'we'll make sure that we have a really big upskilling of the workforce', as well as ensuring that new teachers 'get much more training' for pupils with special needs and neurodiversity. Oliver has revealed previously that he did not read a complete book until he was 38, despite becoming one of the world's most popular non-fiction authors. In 2017, Oliver said that children with dyslexia were fortunate: 'I genuinely think that when someone says to you, 'Johnny's got dyslexia', you should get down on your knees, shake the child's hand and say: Well done, you lucky, lucky boy.'

Muswellbrook preview, best bets, inside mail for Sunday, June 1, 2025

As the clean up from the devastating floods in northern New South Wales continues, Taree trainer Tony Ball is looking to cause an upset in the two-year-old feature at Muswellbrook. Ball has three runners engaged in the Greg Cribb Memorial Red Crown 2YO Handicap (900m) in Andrea, All Too Silent and Northern Glow. Andrea opened a $26 chance on TAB Fixed Odds on Friday morning behind the Peter Snowden -trained Raging Force at $1.35 before firming into $19 after the early scratching of Firepop. The son of Group 1 placegetter Graff made his debut at Newcastle on February 15 when coming from last to finish fifth behind Frostfire, You're The Choice and Mednyi. 'He probably should have run fourth. He just got a bit lost,' said Tony Ball. The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'He will get back and get home hard.' Ball said Andrea has shown nice ability but has been a work in progress. 'He has shown me a bit this horse,' Ball said with a laugh. 'He had a few trials because he was slow to get going and put it all together but he has learnt to do it now.' Ball's other two runners in the Red Crown - All Too Silent and Northern Glow – opened as the two outsiders of the field at $101 but he expects them to make their presence felt, especially Northern Glow. The daughter of Group 1 Golden Rose runner-up North Pacific bumped into a pretty smart one on debut at Coffs Harbour where she had to chase the speedy Shaggy before finishing fifth. She then finished seventh behind the unbeaten Zumbo at Grafton on January 27. 'She didn't much wrong in her first preparation, she was just a bit green,' said Ball. She has improved immensely from last preparation and this time, I've put the ear muffs on her. 'She will go forward from the gate. She is quick.' All Too Silent raced in the same two races as Northern Glow when last behind Shaggy before closing from near last when fourth to Zumbo. 'His last run was excellent at Grafton,' he said. 'He's learnt a lot from that first preparation and is a lot different horse now. 'If Andrea is on song, he will beat the other two of time home and will be hard to beat. The favourite, Mia Ballerina dances her way to an easy win! ðŸ' @mcacajamez @cwallerracing â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) April 21, 2025 'The filly could knock him off if he doesn't run to his potential but he has just a little bit more class than her. All Too Silent can run well but is probably looking for 1200 metres.' Ball's other runner for the day is Star Prediction in the Super Maiden (1280m) and he expects the gelding to go close to breaking through. The son of Nostradamus has placed in three of his five starts including a close second to Solitario at Scone on Cup Day. He also finished third behind Mia Ballerina and Hidden Achievement at Canterbury on April 21. 'He has tonnes of ability and is going enormous,' Ball said. 'He just got beat at Scone the other day. The horse of (Paul) Messara's just grabbed him in the last few strides. 'The second horse in that Canterbury race, Hidden Achievement, was racing at Rosehill this weekend and was also nominated for the Group 2 Sires' Produce at Eagle Farm. 'It's pretty good form.' The three-year-old has drawn out the outside barrier but Ball and jockey Shae Wilkes are too concerned. 'I said to Shae on Friday morning that we've drawn bad this weekend and she said 'We'll be outside the leader after we've gone 50 metres'. 'He worked really well on Friday morning and looks fabulous and I'm sure he will run very well again.' ADAM SHERRY'S TOP SELECTIONS BEST BET Race 7 No. 2: RITZSUN Narrow seconds at his past two runs and can go one better. NEXT BEST Race 3 No. 5: IMAGE OF THE SUN Well suited stepping up to the 2300m and gets her chance. VALUE BET Race 6 No. 7: ZOOMORPHIC Strong wins at his past two and an improving track only helps as he chances a hat-trick. QUADDIE Race 4: 3, 5, 8 Race 5: 1, 2, 8 Race 6: 4, 5, 6, 7 Race 7: 2, 8, 11 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW REECE JONES has some nice rides and looks a chance in the TAB Jockey Challenge. INSIDE MAIL – MUSWELLBROOK RAGING FORCE (2) was well backed on debut in the Group 3 Breeders Plate where he raced wide without cover and finishing a three length sixth to King Kirk. Has since been gelded. Closed strongly under a hold when third in his May 5 Randwick trial. ANDREA (1) was green on debit at Newcastle on Feb 15 where he settled last and wide. He did make up ground to beat a couple home and finish two-and-a-half lengths off Frostfire. IT STAYS IN VEGAS (5) was also green in debut when fifth at Scone on Jan 30. Led and won a Gunnedah trial on May 14. Bet: Trifecta 2 / 1, 4, 5 LAST LALIQUE (8) is a debutant is a half-sister to the consistent Dollar Magic by Star Witness. Sat outside the leader and kept under a good hold to the line when a nose second ion her May 14 Gunnedah trial. BRUMMAGEN (1) was third to Sardonyx at Dubbo on debut in February last year and returned with a handy fourth to Joiselle second-up. Resumes from a long spell after a handy third to Wonder Step in his May 13 Wellington trial. BALLY ISLE (4) will take improvement from his two runs in his first campaign including a debut second to Divine Feminine at Quirindi. IMAGE OF THE SUN (5) settled four lengths off the leader Enterprise Lassie and made ground under her 62kg to finish second over 1600m. Was slow out and always well back when down the drack to Fiorsum Fred in the 1600m Highway at Scone on May 17. Much better suited stepping up to the 2300m. JONNY BE SWIFT (7) battled away for third to Cascade Mountain as an odds-on fav at Gunnedah two starts back before backing up at Taree eight days later when a long head third to Justifiably over 2000m. CASCADE MOUNTAIN (2) is in great form with four wins and a close second from his last five starts. STRATIFIED (5) is racing in consistent form. Led all-the-way to beat Rouge Moulin at Mudgee back on Feb 23. Has placed in three of his four runs since and was fourth in the other. Just run down late by Lockdown Gamble at Mudgee last start. MCKEON (8) came from a long way back when beaten just over two lengths by Ballinderry Sal in the TAB Highway at Randwick two starts ago. Bounced back to winning form to beat Ritzsun in the Highway on Gosford Cup Day. INFERENCIA (3) led all-the-way to win a Rosehill Highway on Mar 22 before an eighth to Bianco Vilano at Warwick Farm. STAR PREDICTION (1) battled away for third behind Mia Ballerina and Hidden Achievement over 1250m at Canterbury three starts back then struggled in the very heavy ground when sixth to Mille De Lune over 1500m at Newcastle. Back to 1300m and just nabbed by Solitario at Scone last start. JUSTICE WARRIOR (2) was okay when second to Cashaway Gold at Port Macquarie first-up and better when second to King's Secret at Gosford. Raced keen with a sit and didn't finish off when sixth to Queen's Rhapsody at Hawkesbury last start. CALIFORNIA SECRET (8) resumes here. Closed nicely from last for third in his May 13 Warwick Farm trial. ZOOMORPHIC (7) was ultra impressive winning a Mudgee Super Maiden and followed with a nice win from Only Need One on a Soft 5 at Dubbo. With an improving track here, his chances of a hat-trick improve. NAVY STEEL (4) has two wins and a close second from his four runs this time in. Just beaten under 61.5kg at Inverell last start. SANZENO (5) had no luck when down the track in the 1600m Highway at Scone last start. Was a handy third to Otium over 1700m at Scone and a half-length second over 1400m to Mulvader at Mudgee before that. RITZSUN (2) raced outside the leader when a neck second to Deion at Mudgee then raced in the middle of a lie of three before going to the front when a head second to Mckeon in the Highway at Gosford. Drawn wide but gets a claim and can break through. MOVE SHE CAN (11) scored a nice win first-up at Scone before a third to Hulu here. Bumped at start and got well back when fifth at Tamworth last start. Drawn well and should settle in a forward position. OCTAVIAN TREASURE (8) and CUMBOOGLE (1) have claims.
