(AP Photo/Tony Gutierrez) The Winnipeg Jets have locked up a rising star on the team's blue line for another three seasons. The club announced Wednesday it has reached a three-year deal with defenseman Dylan Samberg worth $5.75 million per season. According to TSN, Samberg was scheduled to have an arbitration hearing later in the day. The restricted free agent was coming off a two-year, $2.8 million contract. The 26-year-old Minnesota native set career highs with six goals and 20 points in 60 games during the 2024-25 campaign and tied for sixth in the NHL with a +34 plus/minus rating. The Jets selected Samberg in the second round of the 2017 NHL Draft. He's racked up 51 points in 216 games for the team over the past four seasons.

Beto O'Rourke calls on Democrats to play hardball on redistricting
"Why the fuck are we responding and reacting to the other side instead of taking offense on these things?" the former Texas gubernatorial candidate said. Beto O'Rourke wants Democrats to play hardball on redistricting. | Tony Gutierrez/AP By Danny Nguyen 07/22/2025 04:07 PM EDT Former Rep. Beto O'Rourke of Texas added himself to a shortlist of Democrats pressuring California to carve out extra congressional districts for their party ahead of the midterms. The remarks, made at an event hosted by the left-leaning think tank Center for American Progress on Tuesday, came a day after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott started a special session to redistrict his state years earlier than it normally would, which could thwart Democrats' attempt to recapture power in Congress in 2026. It's part of an effort led by President Donald Trump to hold the slim Republican majority, but California Gov. Gavin Newsom has threatened to redistrict his state in a way that'd offset gains in Texas. 'Not only do I think he should do this, I don't think he should wait for Texas,' said O'Rourke, who is considering running for a Texas Senate seat in 2026. 'Why the fuck are we responding and reacting to the other side instead of taking offense on these things?'

Paige Bueckers is matching the hype, and then some, as the No. 1 pick for the Wings

(AP Photo/Tony Gutierrez) Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers celebrates after a basket in the second half of a WNBA basketball game against the Phoenix Mercury Thursday, July 3, 2025, in Arlington, Texas. (AP Photo/Tony Gutierrez) ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Paige Bueckers has been just about everything the Dallas Wings hoped as the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA draft, matching Caitlin Clark from a year ago as a rookie All-Star starter while shouldering a heavy load for a rebuilding team. The former UConn star is also passing her most predictable test: handling losing when she didn't have much experience with it in college. Advertisement Beyond managing the losing, Bueckers has helped engineer quite the response. Although they just lost to Phoenix by 30 points after beating the Mercury in their previous game, the Wings are 5-3 since blowing an 11-point lead in the last four minutes of an 88-84 loss at Las Vegas that dropped them to 1-11. 'Credit to Paige,' said Chris Koclanes, a rookie himself as a head coach. 'Her mindset and her intention into the mental side of the game, she's resilient. She's not discouraged at all. She's in there, she's positive. She knows there is a larger vision here and that you've got to go through some of this tough stuff early to ultimately get to where you want to go.' Bueckers missed four of the losses while recovering from a concussion and then an illness. She also sat the second night of a back-to-back with a sore right knee, and the Wings won for the first time without her. A three-time Associated Press All-American during a UConn career capped by the storied program's first national championship in nine years, Bueckers lost 13 times in four seasons with the Huskies. She's at 10 in less than two months with the Wings. Advertisement 'Just staying disciplined in your habits and not changing who you are based on the results, but sticking to your process and how you do things,' Bueckers said. 'Regardless of the winning and losing, just enjoy coming to work every single day. It's been fun to enjoy the process. You never want to get used to losing, but you also don't want to be used to being result-oriented.' Clark, the first overall pick last year by Indiana, is a captain in just her second All-Star appearance, and Bueckers' bid makes it three years in a row to have a rookie starter. Clark's teammate with the Fever, Aliyah Boston, did it in 2023. Bueckers leads the Wings — and all WNBA rookies — in scoring (18.7 points per game), assists (5.7) and steals (1.8), which means she's well on her way to matching another Clark accomplishment from a year ago: Rookie of the Year. Even though the Wings plummeted to 9-31 last season — just a year after winning a playoff series for the first time since moving to the Dallas area in 2016 — they still had 2024 All-Star Game MVP Arike Ogunbowale in their backcourt. Advertisement Bueckers fit perfectly as a facilitator alongside one of the league's elite scorers, but clearly has proven to be a scoring option equal to Ogunbowale, who has missed the past two games with a thumb injury. 'I'm asking her to do a ton right now,' Koclanes said of his 23-year-old star. 'Having her bring the ball up the floor every single time and then also score and also facilitate. How she's been able to handle that has just been extremely impressive.' The Wings overhauled most of the rest of their roster this past offseason. First-year general manager Curt Miller is now tinkering, having recently sent NaLyssa Smith, one of the acquisitions, to Las Vegas for a 2027 first-round pick. There's no question the Wings plan to build around Bueckers. Advertisement 'I think her greatest gift is she makes everyone better around her,' Miller said. 'She's a humble superstar. She's just had a remarkable start with a lot of pressure. And coming off a very long collegiate season where, chasing that national championship, you can't imagine what the weight on her shoulders must have felt like.' Repeating one other thing Clark did might be difficult for Bueckers. The Fever rebounded from a 1-8 start to make the playoffs last year before getting swept by Connecticut in a best-of-three series in the first round. A postseason bid is likely to require getting back to .500, and the schedule over the next month has plenty of playoff contenders, including three meetings with the defending champion New York Liberty. There is almost a weeklong break in there, but not for Bueckers. She'll be at the All-Star Game at Indianapolis on July 19. She won't be looking at that recognition as any sort of validation. Advertisement 'I don't live to anybody else's expectations or what I'm supposed to look like,' Bueckers said. 'I just go out there and play every single game and every single possession as it is. And the results may vary. So whatever that looks like on any given night, you live with the results.' She's living by those words as a rookie. ___ AP WNBA:

Canada looks to win Gold Cup group as clash with El Salvador awaits

HOUSTON — In the wake of the disappointing 1-1 draw with Curacao, Canada has left itself some work to do in the final Group B game against El Salvador on Tuesday at the Gold Cup. Create Account A win over No. 90 Curacao on Saturday would have guaranteed the 30th-ranked Canadians a berth in the quarterfinals. But conceding a 94th-minute goal raised the stakes somewhat for the game against No. 81 El Salvador at Shell Energy Stadium. Canada (1-0-1, four points) is still in the Group B driver's seat, leading the standings ahead of Honduras (1-1-0, three points), Curacao (0-0-2, two points) and El Salvador (0-1-1, one point). The top two from each of the four pools move on to the knockout round. Canada could still advance with a loss, given that only the Honduras-Curacao winner will have more than four points. And while El Salvador, with a win, would have the same number of points as Canada, the Canadians go into the game with a sizable goal difference advantage (plus-6 compared to minus-2 for El Salvador and minus-4 for Honduras), which is the first tiebreaker after points total. Read More 'The fact that we've left it to this stage isn't ideal for us to win the group,' Canada coach Jesse Marsch acknowledged. 'We're looking at it now as it's four elimination matches left,' he added. 'So we can't have anything but the best mentality and understanding of how difficult this match will be. And the matter of inches and sometimes centimetres on the pitch that will make the difference.' Winning the group means avoiding the Group C winner — likely No. 33 Panama — in the quarterfinal. The Group B winner will face the Group C runner-up, likely No. 105 Guatemala or No. 63 Jamaica. The Curacao game was the final game of Marsch's two-game ban. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Marsch was handed the suspension after being sent off in the CONCACAF Nations League third-place game in March, protesting the lack of a penalty call. He said later he was doing so at the behest of his players, who felt disrespected and had asked him to stand up for them. He became the subject of a second disciplinary hearing after the Gold Cup opener in Vancouver, with CONCACAF questioning where he watched the game — in a suite with other Canadian team officials at B.C. Place Stadium — and whether offensive language was used in an interaction with a match official. 'The dialogue has been positive,' Marsch said of CONCACAF. 'And I think that more than anything, this has been a misunderstanding in some ways. I think we're all ready to move forward in a positive way.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. He said he expected to hear from CONCACAF later in the day. Canada opened the tournament with a 6-0 thumping of No. 75 Honduras before stumbling against Curacao. 'We let ourselves down in the second half,' said Marsch. 'We've talked about it. We're going to learn from it. We're going to be better for it and we're going to make sure that we don't have any more of those kinds of performances and experiences. And that we understand that in all moments exactly what games are and that we're up for it and we're ready to meet the challenges and set the tone for how we want to play.' RECOMMENDED VIDEO El Salvador played Curacao to a scoreless draw and lost 2-0 to Honduras. El Salvador's squad is almost entirely comprised of players with domestic clubs other than midfielders Brayan Gil (FC Baltika, Russia), Enrico Duenas (Top Oss, the Netherlands) and Harold Osorio (Chicago Fire, MLS). This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Marsch made a point of talking up El Salvador, saying 'this is a team that I really love to watch. 'The passion they have. They fight for every inch on the pitch,' he said. 'They make their country proud with the kind of mentality they play with and the commitment they have as a group.' 'This will be a difficult game for us and we'll have to be at our best to find a way to get a win.' Marsch said defender Derek Cornelius, who had been sidelined with a lower-body injury, is good to go. The Canadian men are 10-5-4 against El Salvador, winning 3-0 and 2-0 when they met in September 2021 and February 2022. Canada's last loss to El Salvador came at the same Houston stadium in October 2017, a 1-0 defeat in an international friendly benefiting victims of Hurricane Harvey. Of the starters that day, only Cyle Larin and the injured Jonathan Osorio are part of the current Gold Cup squad. Mexico is the current Gold Cup champion, having defeated Panama 1-0 in the 2023 final for its record ninth Gold Cup title. The U.S. has lifted the trophy seven times and Canada once, in 2000. The Canadian men lost to the U.S. in a quarterfinal penalty shootout last time out, at the 2023 tournament. Toronto & GTA Toronto Maple Leafs World Toronto Blue Jays NBA
