Tony Lim's viral fight sparks debate on self-defence, anger management

IT wasn't just a fight on the streets that threw viral MMA fighter Tony Lim Zhe Hong into the limelight. It was his defense for an elderly man that made his action worthy of a Hollywood movie. The instant fame has since befuddled Lim, who wondered about the popularity of the video. But apparently, there is a different side of him too, as seen in a recent video on X. 'A life lesson that I learned is that self defense is very important. If I don't know how to defend myself, in this situation maybe I am the one who fell to the ground,' said the 22-year old Lim in the video interview. At one time in his life, Lim wanted to play badminton but was provoked by his friend, claiming that the sport was for transvestites. Sorry to all the badminton fans out there. The ending is chef kiss — @ (@anthraxxxx) July 18, 2025 Contrary to the brawn displayed in the video, Lim studies psychology and is a part time tuition teacher. However, it appears his action has also attracted some haters on the cyberspace. Netizen @Alhaqim01 said they needed the story from the point of view of the Malay man who got beaten up by Lim. Some even threatened to beat him up. According to @taro_liam, Lim was safe because the Malay man did not die on the scene. Safe to say, the viral fight would not have occurred if the combatants were able to control their anger. Fascinatingly, martial arts, while playing a huge role in ending the fight, would have played an even bigger role in ensuring that it did not start in the first place. According to the website Evolve Daily, martial arts is a well-rounded practice that can effectively support anger management and guide individuals toward greater emotional balance and happiness. While each martial arts discipline involves different movements and techniques, all styles share a physically active foundation. Participants are required to move, sweat, and engage their bodies—activities known to help diffuse anger. Physical exercise releases endorphins, the body's natural mood enhancers, which can improve overall emotional outlook and promote a more positive mindset. Beyond the physical benefits, martial arts offers a unique mental focus. When individuals experience rising anger, training can help redirect their attention. Whether sparring with a partner, executing striking combinations in a Muay Thai session, or drilling positions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, practitioners must concentrate on their movements, their training partners, and the objectives of the session. This mindfulness helps calm the mind and fosters mental clarity. In essence, martial arts provides both a physical and psychological outlet, helping practitioners process emotions constructively while building discipline, awareness, and resilience. —July 20, 2025 Main image: @anthraxxxx (X)

[Watch] One Punch Justice: How Defending An Elderly Assault Victim Led To Malaysia's Most Viral Knockout

Subscribe to our FREE 'At that time, I wanted to explain the situation. I was still trying to communicate with him,' Tony Lim Zhe Hong said from his gym, reflecting on the moments before he knocked out a security guard in what became Malaysia's most viral street fight of the year. Speaking in his first detailed interview since the 10 July incident, Lim described how he desperately tried to avoid the confrontation that would make him internet famous. Lim, an amateur MMA fighter from Kuala Lumpur with a record of 4 wins and 1 loss, currently ranked #15 in the Southeast Asia Men's Featherweight category, explained how the situation spiraled beyond his control. 'He asked me, 'Gentlemen, let's go outside and settle this one-on-one,'' Lim recalled, describing the moment when peaceful resolution became impossible. What the security guard didn't realize was that he was challenging a legitimate champion who had recently won the Malaysia Fight League Featherweight Championship. That is Tony Lim- a certified MMA fighter and coach. That abang? Pengikut kumpulan Gerak Solo yang percaya ada rimau ikut dia dan jin akan bantu dia waktu kena serang tapi malangnya hanya bunyi tinggggg saja yang kedengaran. — Ikhwan (@JatIkhwan) The Elderly Victim That Started It All 'Two weeks before this incident, I was at my apartment building's ground floor when I heard about a fight,' Lim explained, revealing the shocking origin of the conflict. The security guard had physically attacked an elderly resident—a 70 to 80-year-old man who was simply trying to go about his day. Lim filmed the incident, capturing the guard's unprovoked violence, though his footage documented the aftermath rather than the initial attack. 'He threatened me, wanting me to delete this video,' Lim revealed, showing how the guard's attempts at intimidation set the stage for their eventual confrontation. The situation developed over multiple encounters until 'last Thursday night, when I went to the neighboring mall to buy things,' when the guard spotted him again and decided it was time for revenge. Instead of facing consequences for attacking an elderly man, the security guard decided to target the witness who had documented his misconduct. The Cover-Up: 'Don't Spread This Video Around' The guard's plan was simple: intimidate the MMA fighter into deleting the evidence of his assault on a defenseless elderly resident. The confrontation escalated when Lim said the guard began pointing at him. 'I saw him pointing at me, so I asked him why are you pointing at me,' Lim recalled. The situation became more complex when 'his superior also happened to be present, so his boss asked' about what was happening. Throughout the encounter, the guard made it clear he didn't want the video circulated: 'Don't spread this video around,' he demanded, according to Lim's account. Clarifying the Viral Video Lim also addressed confusion about the viral footage that spread across social media. 'There's a post on Facebook,' he explained, clarifying that 'the video segment in the post wasn't filmed by me' and questioning 'whether it was posted by me.' However, Lim confirmed he did leave comments in the comment section of the viral post. He identified the key players in the incident: 'This person wearing red clothes is our apartment's security guard,' Lim explained, pointing out the antagonist in the confrontation. The Final Moments Despite his best efforts to defuse the situation, Lim found himself backed into a corner. At that time, I wanted to go and explain this matter. I was still trying to communicate' with the security guard even as tensions reached their breaking point. But when the guard began removing his (clothes) and watch, preparing for physical confrontation, Lim knew dialogue had failed. 'He started taking off his clothes, taking off his watch and these things,' Lim observed, recognizing the universal signs that a fight was inevitable. 'Then this kind of conflict happened,' Lim said simply, referring to the moment that would make him internet famous. Taking It Outside When it became clear that violence was unavoidable, Lim made a strategic decision to move the confrontation to an open area. 'I asked my girlfriend next to me to help me record a video as evidence,' he explained, ensuring there would be documentation of the security guard's aggressive behavior. 'Then you can see what happened in the video,' Lim said matter-of-factly when describing the knockout punch that ended the confrontation. One punch. Clean, quick, and lights-out effective. The security guard who thought he could bully an elderly man and then intimidate witnesses dropped like a sack of potatoes. 'After reporting to the police, we had already reconciled and shaken hands,' he said, showing that despite the viral nature of the incident, both men were able to resolve their differences through proper channels. Addressing the Viral Phenomenon Despite the peaceful resolution, Lim remains puzzled by the explosive popularity of the footage. 'But I don't know why this video suddenly went viral,' he admitted, expressing genuine confusion about how a local dispute became international internet content. Most importantly, Lim wanted to address the racial undertones that some viewers had attached to the incident. This matter is actually unrelated to race. So I think there's no need to bring this into racial discussions. The viral knockout that made Lim internet famous wasn't about racial tensions or random street violence—it was about a trained fighter defending the dignity of an elderly assault victim and refusing to be intimidated into silence.
