Donny Schatz finished second last year, followed by Brad Sweet, Justin Peck and Rico Abreu. NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson was in the field and was running second late, but a mechanical issue slowed his car and he finished just 20th on the night. NASCAR legend joins Goldberg in the ring for emotional WWE Farewell

WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg's wrestling career came to an end on July 12 in Atlanta but the biggest surprise for NASCAR fans came after the final bell. As the WWE Hall of Famer stood in the ring after his last match, NASCAR legend Tony Stewart walked out turning an already emotional goodbye into something even more special. Goldberg, 58, went out the only way he knew how, fighting. He faced World Heavyweight Champion Gunther at Saturday Night's Main Event XL and pushed the younger star to the limit in a hard-hitting final match. After the match the WWE legend thanked the Atlanta crowd and talked about his career and what's next, including a new car-themed show called Car-lectibles. But just when you thought the night was over Tony Stewart appeared first at ringside then in the ring with Goldberg. Standing side by side the two legends from different worlds shared a moment that immediately went viral. Last year they traded jokes about Toyotas and Mopar loyalty. A bit of friendly trash talk that fans loved. Seeing them together again, this time in the ring was the payoff. Tony Stewart wasn't just there to watch. He was part of the WWE moment. Fans quickly noticed Stewart's new lean look. He's been training hard for the NHRA drag racing season. 'Tony looks like he could get in the ring' one fan joked online. But there's a real connection between the two. Goldberg is a Mopar guy and a fixture in the racing world off screen. Stewart and his wife drag racer Leah Pruett are tied to that same world. Their shared love of cars, speed and performance made this crossover feel natural, two legends supporting each other in a new setting. Alex Bowman on snake removal, ‘Her' vs. ‘The Terminator,' and more: 12 Questions

Each week, The Athletic asks the same 12 questions to a different race car driver. Up next: Alex Bowman of Hendrick Motorsports, who heads to his favorite track of Dover Motor Speedway this weekend. This interview has been lightly edited for clarity, but the full version is available on the 12 Questions Podcast. 1. What was one of the first autographs you got as a kid, and what do you remember about that moment? Tony Stewart at Turkey Night at Irwindale. That's the first one I remember, and he had a giant-a— line to get to him. I'm pretty sure he was pretty over it by the time I got up there — as anybody would have been. I was around Tony later in his career. He's the greatest. I absolutely love Tony Stewart. But I feel like when I got his autograph as a kid, it was peak grumpy Tony Stewart. It was pretty cool though. Advertisement 2. What is the most miserable you've ever been inside of a race car? Mexico was super painful. My back was killing me (from the Michigan wreck a week earlier). If we weren't running well, I probably don't finish that race. So that was a rough one. We've had our share of bad days where we've just not run how we wanted to, but just from a pain perspective, that one was rough to get through. 3. Outside of racing, what is your most recent memory of something you got way too competitive about? I'm terrible at everything. If I get competitive over something, I'm just gonna let myself down. I do that on Sundays enough. Oh, I've got a good one. My friends and I go to Colorado quite a bit, and we ended up on vacation with a bunch of Hot Wheels tracks. Somehow they were in the house we were staying at — or maybe somebody brought them. So we created a drinking game out of this Hot Wheels track that we set up — down two flights of stairs, across the table, across a snowboard. It was like an elimination round: Whoever's car made it the shortest had to take a shot. And you could buy back into the game with an extra shot. It got massively overcompetitive. And at altitude, alcohol takes effect faster. The town we were in is like 8,000-something feet, so yeah, it gets a little blurry. I think that's why it's so blurry whether the Hot Wheels tracks were already there or someone brought them. But after that, it's required that we bring Hot Wheels tracks on vacation because that was incredibly fun. 4. What do people get wrong about you? That I have no personality. I get that a lot. I would say I'm definitely shy, so maybe that's why people think I don't have any personality. But if you meet any of my friends — like all three of them — they will tell you I'm a complete a—hole. So I feel like that's a personality. 5. What kind of Uber passenger are you, and how much do you care about your Uber rating? I'm a pretty quiet Uber passenger. Hence the shy thing. I don't have any personality, so I can't speak up in an Uber. I think my Uber rating is pretty good. I don't really Uber much, though. Because I don't have any personality, I don't go anywhere, you know? So there's just not a lot of Ubering going on. Advertisement So really, my personality is just having a good Uber rating. 6. I'm asking each person a wild-card question. You recently had a snake get into your house after your girlfriend Chloe accidentally scared it inside. How did you actually get the snake out once it was located? This was a pretty fun Thursday morning. We had to leave early to get (to Chicago), so I'm getting ready to go to the airport, and I just hear screams. I thought a car crashed into the backyard, or the dogs were fighting — something really bad. I come running out and Chloe is crying, and there's a snake somewhere. I'm like, 'Well, where is the snake?' She's like, 'Well, I don't know where the snake is, but there was a snake.' 'Are you sure there's a snake somewhere?' 'Well, I think so.' She had let the dogs out and turned around to walk back to the door. The snake was in front of the door, and she screamed and ran away. She left the door wide open. So maybe if there's a snake, close the door so the snake can't go inside where there's eight million places to hide, right? I spent like 45 minutes looking for the snake in the bedroom, because that's the door that was open. And it's not anywhere. I'm messing with her like, 'Oh, the snake's under your pillow. The snake's in your nightstand.' … She wouldn't go anywhere near the bedroom door. She's like, 'I'm not going in there until you find the snake.' Finally I give up. I'm like, 'OK, the snake's not here.' Then I turn around, and it is three feet in front of me. I'm like, 'Holy s—. It's not funny anymore! It's actually in here. We gotta get this thing out.' So I got the pool skimmer and picked it up, put it back in its natural habitat. 7. This is my 16th year doing these 12 Questions interviews and I'm re-asking a previous question. The first interview we did was in 2014, when you were with BK Racing. That year, you asked Chase Elliott what his favorite part about being a driver was. So now I'll ask you: What is your favorite part about being a driver? Probably just continuously trying to be better. Racing Cup at this level — it's really easy to lose sight of the fact that you're living the dream. You're doing what you always wanted to do growing up. Advertisement But it's so hard and so competitive, and there's so much pressure all the time that it becomes work. And then you think winning solves everything, or winning will make everything better. And it really doesn't, because you still have to go the next week. You can still get your a— kicked just as bad the next week. So it's just the grind of continuing to try to train harder, find new things, and be faster. The Cup Series is in a place right now that 10 years ago, nobody was even close to this level. It's continued to elevate. All the tools we all have access to now — everybody's gotten so much better and everybody pushes each other. The field is so close. All the cars are the same. 8. Other than one of your teammates, name a driver who you would be one of the first to congratulate them in victory lane if they won a race. I would say (Christopher) Bell, but I haven't gone to victory lane for any of his wins this year. (Laughs.) But I have congratulated him — so it still counts, right? It's the thought that counts. It's a pain in the a— to get in there. There's so many people. I see the crowd and I'm like, 'They probably won't let me in anyway.' 9. How much do you use AI technology, whether for your job or daily life? Are you a ChatGPT person? No, I've never used it. I don't know how to use it. I'm probably falling behind because of that. I guess I should probably start figuring that out, because that's going to take over all of our jobs. They're probably gonna have AI personalities driving the cars here soon. We're all screwed on having a job with AI coming up. Is there sarcastic AI? Yeah, you can train it to do whatever you want, honestly. S—. We're all f—d. Wasn't there a movie about this? Yeah, where he falls in love with it? No, I was talking about 'The Terminator.' (Laughs.) Are you in love with an AI? Advertisement Not me, but there was a movie about that. Yeah, OK. Really! The dude who falls in love with AI — 'Her.' (The AI) was (voiced by) Scarlett Johansson. Doesn't ring a bell? No. I think 'The Terminator' had a different outcome. Sounds like it. 10. What is a time in your life that you felt was really challenging, but you're proud of the way you responded to it? The end of 2023, beginning of 2024. Just coming back after breaking my back (in a sprint car crash), going through the struggles, trying to get back to winning races. All that stuff really paid off in the second half of 2024. We were able to run really well, have a good playoff run, do a lot of good things and kind of get back to where we needed to be. 11. What needs to happen in NASCAR to take the sport to the next level of popularity? I think half the cars should go one direction, and the other half should go the other way. Sort of like Atlanta. Yes, but we also can't count caution laps because I've seen a big sentiment that the races need to be longer. They're not long enough. Oh yeah? You see that a lot online? Yes. So I've been going four-and-a-half-hour minimum race length. Half the cars one direction, half the cars the other way. And if we get to halfway and there's still more than 30 cars, then we have to run a figure eight. In all seriousness, we've continued to evolve and go to new places and markets. The street course (in Chicago). Going to Mexico City was cool. Continuing to go to new places is really cool, but also staying true to the history of the sport and keeping those historic races. There's not a driver in the Truck, Xfinity or Cup garages — probably not a driver in the country — who doesn't want more horsepower for the Cup cars and all the cars. More horsepower would make things better. 12. Each week, I ask a driver to give me a question for the next interview. Last week's question came from Shane van Gisbergen, who asks: As a fellow car enthusiast, what is your dream JDM (Japanese domestic market) car and why? I know SVG has an RX-7 that he just did. He had somebody build it here in the States for him, and it came out really cool. Advertisement He knows I have an R32 GT-R, which is a super cool car. It makes a little over 700 horsepower. It's pretty much restored. Something is always broken on it. I'd say that's probably my JDM dream car. So you already have your dream car. I mean, I have a lot of cars though, and SVG knows that, too. I've got 20 cars at the moment. It's a massive problem. It's an addiction. And everybody yells at me about it. Do you have a question I can ask the next person? What was the worst interview they've ever done — and why was it with Jeff Gluck?
