England vs Italy – Preview & Score Prediction

Reigning champions England take on Italy today in the first semi-final of UEFA Women's Euro 2025. Kick-off is at 8 p.m. Moroccan time (GMT+1) in Stade de Geneve. England come into the tie as favourites but needed penalties to edge past Sweden in the quarter-finals, drawing 2-2 in regulation time after coming from two goals down. They eventually won the shootout 3-2 after seven rounds. Italy, meanwhile, are enjoying a landmark tournament. Their 2-1 win over Norway in the last round was their first knockout victory at the Euros since 1997. The winner will face either Spain or Germany in Sunday's final. England beat Italy 5-1 in a friendly in February 2024, with goals from Wubben-Moy, Hemp (2), Toone and Daly. Cambiaghi scored Italy's only goal. England captain Leah Williamson is available despite injury concerns. Off the pitch, England have spoken out strongly against racist abuse aimed at defender Jess Carter. 'We feel like it has gone past [taking the knee] now,' said Georgia Stanway. 'We want to tell people that what is being done isn't enough.' Manager Sarina Wiegman and players have urged tech companies to do more to tackle abuse. Italy captain Cristiana Girelli acknowledged their underdog status but struck a defiant tone. 'On paper, we might be [underdogs],' she said. 'But football is decided on the pitch, not on paper.' Girelli praised manager Andrea Soncin for instilling belief and clarity since taking charge post-World Cup. 'He gives us motivation, lets us express ourselves, and made us realise that everyone has their time,' she said. Soncin added: 'England are direct. They attack space well. But we're confident we have what it takes.' Predicted line-ups: England: Hampton; Bronze, Williamson, Carter, Greenwood; Walsh, Stanway, Toone; James, Hemp, Russo Italy: Giuliani; Oliviero, Salvai, Linari, Di Guglielmo; Caruso, Giugliano, Severini; Cantore, Girelli, Bonansea Prediction: The Lionesses to prove too clinical, despite Italy's spirited run. Grieving Toone, Mead find support in each other at Euro 2025

ST. GALLEN: When England midfielder Ella Toone scored a scrappy goal from close range in the first half of their 6-1 rout of Wales at Euro 2025 on Sunday, the 25-year-old kissed her hands and pointed to the sky. It was a gesture to her late father Nick, who died in September of prostate cancer. Beth Mead, who has said she is dedicating Euro 2025 to her mother June who died in 2023 from ovarian cancer, similarly pointed to the sky when she added to England's tally with a second-half goal. The two, who are playing in their first major tournaments since losing their parents, have found a strong shoulder for each other. "We've really bonded over such a terrible thing," Toone told reporters after the game. "It's nice to have someone who's been through it and who understands and knows exactly what's going on and what's going on in my head as well. "We've definitely got each other's backs. We're proud of each other and what's nice is that we're constantly talking about them. We know we're doing them proud." Toone wrote a first person piece about grieving the loss of her dad, who was diagnosed the day after England's Euro 2022 victory over Germany in the final, for The Players' Tribune in January. Mead, whose mother died six months after England's victory in 2022, said their opening game of this tournament against France - a 2-1 loss - was emotional. "We both said in the first game we really struggled a little bit," Mead said. "You look to the stands for your person who was standing there and they're not there anymore. I think my mum was the first person I would look for in the stands. "I obviously understand what Ella felt in that moment and it's just special to be able to have that moment, think about them and dedicate it to them."

England's route to Women's Euros glory as Wales win sets up tricky quarter-final

England beat Wales 6-1 to set up a quarter-final clash with Sweden at the Women's Euros and Mirror Football has taken a look at their potential route to the final England are through to the knockout stages of the Women's Euros after they thrashed Wales 6-1 in their final group game. Goals from Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp, Alessia Russo, Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones saw England book their place in the quarter-finals. The Lionesses will now take on Sweden in Zurich on July 17 as they hope to successfully defend the title they memorably won on home soil back in 2022. If England can beat Sweden then they will meet either Norway or Italy in the semi-finals in Geneva on July 22. ‌ The final will be staged at St. Jakob-Park in Basel on July 27 and England will face France, Germany, Spain or hosts Switzerland if they get there. However, England boss Sarina Wiegman is not looking too far ahead, branding Sweden a "hard team to beat". ‌ Speaking after the win over Wales, Wiegman said: "Of course, [I'm pleased] that we won, that we scored six goals, and big parts of the game we dominated. And it was very clear we were going to win the game but of course, you need to keep the momentum but it was a very good game. "We knew ahead of this tournament we knew this group was really hard, and then when you lose the first game of course there is a massive urgency to win the other two. Now, with the score between France and the Netherlands, that wasn't that urgent but you want to keep it on your own hands. "So it gave us a lot of learnings again with the team and it brought us together after that first loss, so I think that is pretty good. They [Sweden] are always a team, they are always very powerful, they have speed up front and on the counter-attack, they are really good. ‌ "I think it is a hard team to beat, they have done really well in the group, they have won three games. We'll see, we'll get ready, first recover from this one and then we go again against Sweden in Zurich. "I am very happy. As far as I know everyone came fit out of this game, that is very important as we have three days to recover." ‌ Toone, though, took a much different approach as she suggested Sweden "should be scared". Toone told ITV: "It is going to be a difficult game. We watched them the other night, and they were really good. "We need to be on our best game. I think they should be scared. We were really good. It is always hard to play against a team that sits in a low block. It was nice we got an early goal in the first half, and we enjoyed the game."

England, France reach Women's Euro quarter-finals

Holders England reached the quarter-finals of Women's Euro 2025 on Sunday after thrashing Wales 6-1 and taking second place in Group D behind France, who won 5-2 in a thrilling match with the Netherlands. Georgia Stanway started England on their way from the penalty spot in the 13th minute and further goals from Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp, Alessia Russo, Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones made sure of passage to the last eight. England will face Sweden in Zurich on Thursday, a repeat of the semi-final at the last Euros three years ago which the Lionesses won 4-0. But the Swedes look a tough proposition after topping Group C with a perfect nine points and swatting aside Germany on Saturday. "We just wanted to be confident and enjoy it and I think we obviously play better football when we do that. I think there was more flow to the game tonight, there was better connections," said midfielder Keira Walsh. "(Sweden are) going to be a really tough opposition but we're just going to keep trying to focus on what we're doing, keep being confident, playing good football." France meanwhile will take on Germany in Basel in the last quarter-final on Saturday, and are on the same side of the knockout draw as world champions Spain who face hosts Switzerland on Friday. The French finished the group stage three points ahead of England after making it three wins from three thanks to Delphine Cascarino's decisive double. San Diego Wave forward Cascarino has been excellent in Switzerland, and she made sure that France would top the group with the key goals in a superb comeback from a goal down. France, who opened the scoring through Sandie Toletti in the 22nd minute, trailed at the break to a Victoria Pelova strike and Selma Bacha's clumsy own goal. Cascarino stars But Marie-Antoinette Katoto levelled for France just after the hour and the match was done six minutes later thanks to Cascarino's fine finishes. First Cascarino lashed France back ahead with a sumptuous, dipping long-range strike, before rolling in the fourth after Sandy Baltimore watched her shot ricochet off both posts. Sakina Karchaoui completed the scoring from the penalty spot in stoppage time. "I'm having a good Euros, and it's a real pleasure to play in a major tournament. I'm pleased and I hope that we can go a long way," Cascarino told reporters. In St Gallen, England knew a win would be enough to seal a spot in the next round regardless of what happened in Basel, and once Stanway slotted home her penalty after being brought down by Carrie Jones there was no way back for Wales. Eight minutes later Toone doubled England's lead after Wales failed to clear and the Manchester United forward tapped home after her initial effort was blocked on the line by Lily Woodham. Toone then turned provider on the half-hour with a perfect searching cross for Hemp, before Russo rolled home from close range just before half-time to get off the mark for the tournament. Mead drilled home England's fifth in the 72nd minute, but Hannah Cain gave Wales fans something to cheer about by lashing a fine consolation goal past Hannah Hampton. And Beever-Jones completed the rout one minute from the end to send England through on a high.

England blank Wales 6-1 to qualify into Euro quarters

ST. GALLEN, Switzerland: Reigning champions England thrashed neighbours Wales 6-1 to reach the Women's Euro 2025 quarterfinals on Sunday, securing second spot in Group D and cruising into the knockouts, where they will face Sweden, on a high note. Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp, Alessia Russo, Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones were all on target for England, who finished runners-up to France after their 5-2 victory over the Netherlands. Sarina Wiegman's team will next face a Sweden side, who won all three of their games to top Group C, in the quarterfinals on Thursday. "It is going to be a difficult game. We watched (Sweden) the other night and they were really good. We need to be on our best game," Toone said. "But we're feeling confident, I think they should be scared." The second-place finish, however, could be a bonus as provided they get past the Swedes, England would potentially avoid world champions Spain in the semifinals. Stanway struck from the penalty spot in the 13th minute after a foul in the box, calmly sweeping her shot into the far-left corner past the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Olivia Clark to open the floodgates. Toone found the back of the net with a scrappy goal eight minutes later. England capitalised on a sloppy clearance by Rhiannon Roberts, with the ball falling to Russo who nudged it into the path of Toone who fired home at the second attempt. Hemp nodded a third inside 30 minutes after a clever pass from Lauren James to Toone near the byline. Toone found Hemp at the far post with a deep cross for an easy header. Russo bagged her first goal of the tournament just before halftime when Toone made another dart to byline before cutting the ball back for Russo, who took one touch to control it before firing home and Mead cut inside a defender before slotting England's fifth in the 72nd minute. Hannah Cain pulled one back to the delight of the Wales fans, who celebrated by singing their national anthem, in the 76th minute, but England's Beever-Jones replied in the 89th with her first goal in a major tournament, heading home Mead's cross. "We scored six goals and a big part of the game we dominated, a very good game," Wiegman said. "Playing well is the most important, who scores is not that important." Much was made about the rivalry between the two nations, with Wales wanting nothing better than to spoil England's party. Thousands of loud Welsh fans cheered and sang throughout Sunday's match, despite the scoreline. But Wiegman's team, World Cup finalists in 2023, showed their vast experience against a Wales side making their major tournament debut. "We were really good. It is always hard to play against a team that sits in a low block," Toone said. "It was nice we got an early goal in the first half and we enjoyed the game." England have won 10 of the 11 meetings between the two teams, with Wales' best result being a 0-0 draw in 2018. "This is the beginning of a journey for us," Wales midfielder Jess Fishlock said. "We've played three of the best teams in the world at this tournament and we've found out how big that jump is." — Reuters
