TAPS adapting to care for dogs dropped off by breeder

PEKIN, Ill. (WMBD) — Already over puppy capacity yet still willing to nurse 24 dogs back to health after being dropped off at their front door. Tazwell Animal Protective Society, or 'TAPS' in Pekin, is asking for your support as they stretch their resources thin. On Friday, the executive director of TAPS said the person who bred the dogs that were dropped off was doing it unlawfully. At first, TAPS was informed about receiving 24 dogs, but now, they have received a dozen more. TAPS Executive Director Tori Menke said there's not enough space for them, but she's willing to make it work for their shot at a better life. 'Some breeders are not good breeders, they're not ethical breeders, is what I would say,' Menke said. 'They breed for profit and that's all they care about. So when you get some of these dogs from these houses, they have never seen a vet, they've never seen another human, they've never been outside the house. Something like grass is completely new to these dogs.' Taps is collaborating with other local shelters in Fulton County, Peoria, and more to give these dogs proper care. When it comes to fostering, Pet Pack Rescue Initiative said there's always a need. 'There are a lot of dogs that are currently looking for rescue throughout the central Illinois area, and there are not enough foster homes currently available to take all of the dogs that need assistance,' Alyssa Emanuelson, board president of Pet Pack Rescue Initiative said. 'It doesn't matter which rescue or animal control you are talking about. We are all foster-based and we need more fosters to be able to pull dogs.' Meadows Avenue Tap to host ‘Tips for Taps' event on Saturday

EAST PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — One local bar and grill is hosting an event for dog lovers and car enthusiasts alike. Meadows Avenue Tap in East Peoria is putting on their Tips For Taps event on Saturday, which will feature Rusty Rockers' classic cars along with motorcycles and bands performing live music. The event is held to raise money for taps, which Tori Menke, executive director, said is vital for their shelter. 'Fundraising is huge,' Menke said. 'It's the only reason our doors are still open is from all the fundraising. So it's awesome when our community kind of helps us in that regard. They're really doing the heavy lifting when it comes to the fundraising portion and at an event like this.' Loki becomes first Peoria Police K-9 to have a swearing in ceremony Adoptable dogs will be at the fundraiser looking for their forever home, as most shelters have an influx of dogs right now. 'Intake is up and adoptions are down,' Menke said. 'It could be this time of year. People are planning vacations, trying to get end of school year stuff done, so adopting a pet is the last thing on their mind.' Anybody who goes to the event will also be able to eat from the open grill which will cook up brats, butterfly porkchops and ribeye steaks. The event goes from noon until 8 p.m. with music set to play the whole time. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Furiends Wine & Dine at Pekin CC supports TAPS no-kill shelter

PEORIA, Ill (WMBD) — The TAPS No Kill animal shelter relies strictly on private donations to save hundreds of pets, and Saturday, April 5, is their popular Furiends Wine & Dine event at the Pekin Country Club. The executive director of TAPS no kill animal shelter, Tori Menke, along with adoptable furiend, Linus, told WMBD This Morning, that 'we're only funded by donations, so the more people come to our events, the more animals we can help.' Menke did stress getting your ticket to the Furiends Wine & Dine event as early as possible, because the event traditionally sells out, and this year people are already raving about this year's Joey's Slider Meatballs, Monica's Turkey & Cranberry Sandwiches and Rachel's Lobster Mac & Cheese. The evening will also include meet & greets with adoptable puppies, auctions and raffles, and music from Matt Eckberg. The Furiends Wine & Dine event is Saturday, April 5, at Pekin Country Club. Doors open at 5:00 pm with dinner at 5:30 pm, and tickets are $100, at TAPS Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
