North East Wales clubs up for the cup to start season

Rival managers Gary McConnell and Neill Hughes both used to coach in Flint Town United's youth academy while Town's key signing of the summer is former Llay goal-getter Jonny Taylor. 'I know Neill well and I know his team will want to play football. It's a tough one to kick off the season with,' said McConnell, who has taken over the manager's job from Gav Parry. Set for his debut is Llay old boy Taylor and McConnell is pleased to snap up the former Cefn Druids and Rhyl marksman. 'Jonny reached out to us and I think it's a great addition for the club,' added McConnell. 'He's experienced, he'll give us a little more edge and he reminds me of how I was as a player.' Taylor is one of a number of new signings for Town, whose new arrivals also include Kian Brick, Joe Hancock, Lewis James, Alister Randles and Jacob Dempsey. Both sides will be rivals in the Ardal North West League this season where Llay's Hughes will hope to lead his team back into Cymru North. And their chances have been boosted by keeping last season's top scorer Jon Collo on their books. There's a belting derby between Cefn Albion and Rhos Aelwyd whose boss Gareth Jones said: 'Whilst last season was tough for our young squad, we defied the doubters and deserved to stay in the league with the points acquired. 'Our youth system is incredible and at least five players will progress to the senior team, with the addition of Owen Czerniak (Gresford) and Shrewsbury-based Arryn Matthee.' Jack Pawley can't wait for the season to kick off at Coedpoeth United. Pawley is the new man in charge and will be looking to knock out visitors Deiniolen. With the whole of last year's unbeatable U19s team signing forms, Pawley will be spoilt for choice picking his starting XI. 'As a club, we're all very excited for the new season,' said Pawley, who will be assisted by Karl Partington, Aaron Camplin and Adam Taylor. 'We have got a great bunch of lads and you can sense that they all want to do well.' The only downer for Coedpoeth is that new signing Rob Reynolds is out for 10 weeks after with an ankle injury. Chirk AAA's new manager Ryan Roberts will have a new-look squad ahead of Sunday's tie at home against Kinmel Bay. Last season's leading scorer Tom Freeman returns after a short spell at Brickfield Rangers while Ash Maws, Ollie Roberts and Matty Hayes have joined from Cefn Druids. Matty Tombs comes in from Overton while several of Chirk's U19 team will be in the squad including Louie Irving, Tommy McArdle, Alfie Harris and Alfie Robinson. Brad Pearce and Brandon Edwards both miss out through suspension. Rhydymwyn have snapped up Connah's Quay Town duo Will Leonard and Joel Griffiths ahead of their trip to Conwy Borough while Greenfield boss Scott Beck has signed four players as they make the short trip to Rhuddlan Town. 'We have signed four new players, Aaron Dowsett, Connor Davies, Kieron Day and Matt Gilsenan, and are hoping to get another two or three in over the next few weeks,' he said. 'We have underachieved for a few seasons now, so hopefully with the signings we've added we can improve and be in contention once the league starts.' Penyffordd Lions host Knighton Town and Broughton United will look to continue their brilliant introduction to senior football by beating visitors Penrhyndeudraeth. Saltney Town and Hawarden Rangers will also be looking to make home advantage count in their ties against Holyhead Town and Llanilar. Rhostyllen will be favourites to dispose of Deeside Dragons while FC Queen's Park entertain Mynydd Llandegai. Arran 'Taz' Taylor is Park's new boss and he said: 'We come into the season off the back of a successful pre-season, the lads have trained hard and we have bolstered our squad with the two great signings of Jordan Williams and Ryan Kershaw, both experienced players and bring a lot to the club.' There are testing trips for Penycae and Castell Alun, who go to Kerry and St Asaph City respectively, while Sychdyn United host Abermule.

FAI Cup: Longford Town edge Castlebar Celtic in nine-goal thriller

Longford Town progressed to the second round of the Sports Direct FAI Cup at the expense of a brave Castlebar Celtic outfit, emerging 6-3 winners at Celtic Park. A big crowd at the Mayo venue witnessed six first-half goals. Town's Daragh Murtagh bagged a hat-trick, while Mark Cunningham, Eoghan Hughes and former Sligo Rovers striker Jordan Loftus were on target for the home side to go in 3-3 at the break. The Connacht side defended stoutly in the second period but Longford eventually broke them down in the final 15 minutes, scoring three times. Dean George slid the ball under Stefan Hester on 75 minutes, while Francis Campbell hit a fifth in the final minute of normal time.

Revived fixture effectively a trial

A blast from the past is back to give the new North Otago coach an effective trial this afternoon. The once-beloved Town v Country game is back and will allow Luke Herden an opportunity to crystallise his thinking before announcing his first Old Golds squad on Tuesday. There was a time when the clash — between Old Boys, Excelsior and Athletic Marist players (Town) and the best from Valley, Kurow and Maheno (Country) — formed a regular and important part of the calendar, usually in the middle of the Citizens Shield club season. It has been mostly dormant for the best part of a couple of decades so there should be some interest in today's game in Maheno. That is especially the case for those wondering which loan players Herden will recruit as the Old Golds seek a return to the Meads Cup placings after a few lean years. He has named five players from Dunedin club rugby in the Country squad. Zingari-Richmond flanker Flavius Roberts-Vili is an energetic type, and clubmate Ben Fakava is a robust midfielder. First five Kenta Iemura and halfback Kodai Okazaki are from the Shizuoka Revs club in Japan Rugby League One who have spent some time with the Harbour club. Solid prop Steve Salelea has been in consistent form for University and was on the bench for Otago's preseason game against Southland yesterday. Eight players from Excelsior will back up from their Citizens Shield victory for Town, and there are 10 from beaten finalists Valley in the Country squad. A pleasing feature is the selection of leading locals Hayden Tisdall, Kelepi Funaki and Junior Fakatoufifita, all of whom were unavailable for the Heartland Championship last season. The junior game kicks off at 1pm and the senior Town-Country clash is at 2.30pm.

Wasaga Beach Summer Marketing Campaign Kicks into High Gear WASAGA BEACH, ON, July 8, 2025 /CNW/ - This week, the Town of Wasaga Beach is kicking its Summer 2025 marketing campaign into high gear. From sponsoring billboards along Toronto's Gardiner Expressway to running digital ads and hosting social media influencers, the Town is busy promoting local businesses and experiences, and serving up fresh ideas to help visitors plan their day trip and create the perfect vacation in Wasaga Beach this summer. The Town's summer campaign is focused on promoting local businesses and town-organized summer events – and letting people in Ontario and key tourism markets in Canada and the U.S. know that while construction along Beach Drive is underway, Wasaga Beach remains open for business and ready to welcome visitors for some fun in the sun. " We're reimagining our main commercial area, so things are going to look different along Beach Drive this summer, but don't worry — Wasaga Beach is open for business and ready to help you celebrate summer," said Mayor Brian Smith. "Come experience 14 kilometres of sandy beach, spectacular sunsets, delicious food trucks, beachside patios, live music, outdoor adventures and family fun you will never forget." What to expect this summer along Beach Drive and at Beach Area 1 The Town has created a Summer 2025 Beach Area 1 Fun Map to illustrate what residents and visitors can expect at Beach Area 1 during this phase of construction along Beach Drive, including where to park, where to eat, and things to do near Beach Area 1 this summer. Four (4) things you need to know: The show must go on! Special events, including annual favourites like 5K Foam Fest, Multi-Sport Triathlon, Not-So-Pro Beach Volleyball Tournament, The Midway, Memories of Summer concert, gourmet food trucks and local businesses, including beachfront patios The Sand Bar and That Spot Bar & Grill will operate as usual. Check out the Summer 2025 Beach Area 1 Fun Map for full details. Roadway construction on Beach Drive will not impact the beach itself or any of Wasaga's seven (7) other Beach Areas, and pedestrian access to the beachfront in front of Beach Drive will be maintained all summer long. To help make it easier to plan your visit to Wasaga Beach, the town has created a new parking map that includes municipal and provincial lots: Visit to plan your visit to Wasaga Beach today! Background: What's happening along Beach Drive near Beach Area 1? Wasaga Beach continues to move forward quickly to reinvent the town's famous commercial area along Beach Drive at Beach Area 1. This summer, a 300-meter section of Beach Drive between Spruce Street and 2nd Street will be closed, and construction will begin. This project will improve roads and infrastructure along Beach Drive to resolve flooding issues that have continued to negatively impact tourism and businesses along this vital economic corridor. It will also unlock millions of dollars of investment, including a premium Marriott hotel that is set to be built on a parcel of land near Beach Drive in 2026 by the award-winning Sunray Group. Quick Facts In January 2025, the town welcomed the largest infrastructure investment in the history of Wasaga Beach when the Ontario government announced that it would invest over $10.9 million to help redesign and rebuild Beach Drive, which is the heart and lungs of the town's local tourism economy. In May 2025, Wasaga Beach welcomed Premier Doug Ford and Ontario Minister of Tourism Stan Cho to town, along with news that the province will invest $38 million to help build Destination Wasaga. About Wasaga Beach For one hundred years, the Town of Wasaga Beach has been Ontario's iconic summer playground — a place people come to have fun and create memories that will last a lifetime. Today, we're on a mission to become a four-season recreation and live-music destination. Rebuilding Beach Drive and re-imagining our main commercial area at Beach Area 1 supports this vision and Council's priorities: to create opportunities to diversify the economy, grow tourism, create jobs and build a complete community. It's part of the Town's plan to become a leader in sustainability, creativity, innovation and fun! A place with thriving businesses and safe, inclusive, complete neighbourhoods. A place where we celebrate our rich history, diversity of cultures and natural beauty, including the Nottawasaga River, Georgian Bay and the longest freshwater beach in the world.
