City reveals upgrade plans for Herrwood Drive
THE eThekwini Municipality has confirmed plans are in place to widen Herrwood Drive in uMhlanga to four lanes. This comes after residents raised objections about the upgrade process and alleged lack of due procedure which they said were not followed. Two public meetings have been held in an effort to address residents' concerns and last week, the City's Town Planning Department earned the ire of residents after they were a no-show at a meeting in the area. Related story: Anger over municipal officials' no-show at public meeting on Herrwood Drive Spokesperson for the eThekwini Municipality Gugu Sisilana revealed that the upgrade was being privately funded. 'Herrwood Drive is earmarked for an upgrade to a four-lane road (two lanes in each direction) with a centre island and sidewalks. This project is privately funded and is being undertaken to support changes in land use in the area, as approved through the Spatial and Land Use Management Act process. 'The proposed upgrade falls within the existing road reserve, and existing driveways will be reconstructed to Council specifications as part of the works. While some property accesses will be restricted to left-in and left-out, all properties will retain vehicular access,' she said. Sisilana added that the Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) for the planned upgrade had already been completed. 'The TIA processes have been completed and approved, and an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was not required as the road was included in the EIA undertaken for the broader area development. Other roads in the uMhlanga area, such as uMhlanga Rocks Drive and Ridgeside Drive, are also earmarked for future upgrades.' For more from Northglen News, follow us on Facebook , X or Instagram. NMC Resumes Demolition Drive for Ramji Pehalwan Rd Widening After Over a Decade
1 2 Nagpur: After over a decade of delays, the long-pending Ramji Pehalwan road widening project in the Mahal area has finally picked up pace, with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) resuming demolition of properties from Tuesday. Proposed in 2012, the project was repeatedly stalled due to complex land acquisition challenges. The proposed stretch of 1,950 metres, connecting Ram Cooler Square to Durga Mata Mandir Square, is being widened from its current 30 feet to 60 feet (18 metres). The widened road is expected to relieve severe traffic congestion in the densely populated and historically important Mahal area, where narrow lanes have long led to snarls, especially during peak hours. Of the total 124 properties marked for acquisition, NMC earlier managed to demolish 84 properties through sale-purchase agreements. In the subsequent phases, the civic body acquired the remaining private properties under the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (LARR) Act. These acquisitions allowed NMC to gain control over major portions of the stretch, though the execution remained sluggish. Besides private holdings, 15 govt-owned properties fall along the proposed widened stretch. Out of these, eight have already been handed over to NMC, while acquisition of the remaining seven is pending. Notably, these govt properties are being transferred to the civic body without any compensation. On Tuesday, armed with heavy police protection, NMC's town planning department, along with its enforcement squad, began a fresh round of demolitions to clear remaining encroachments, razing 22 properties from CP & Berar College Square to Ramaji Pahelwan Square. Approximately 18 properties are still left to be razed. The civic body plans to carry out the demolitions in a phased manner, depending on ground-level resistance and logistical challenges. "The razing will continue in phases and is critical to completing the long-stalled road widening project. Once fully cleared, it will greatly ease traffic movement in the core areas of the city," said a senior official from NMC's Town Planning Department. The overall cost of the project is pegged at Rs 65 crore. Of this, the state govt is bearing 70% — around Rs 45 crore — while the remaining Rs 20 crore is being funded by the civic body. Once completed, the widened Ramji Pehalwan Road will significantly boost vehicular mobility, reduce travel time, and improve accessibility for emergency vehicles. It will also allow for better footpath infrastructure, enhancing pedestrian safety. NMC hopes the renewed demolition drive will finally lead to the completion of this long-overdue infrastructure project.

NMMC urges residents of buildings without occupancy certificates to apply
Navi Mumbai: In a significant revelation, 2,111 buildings within the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) jurisdiction lack mandatory occupancy certificates. Following the Bombay high court's directives on a Public Interest Litigation and a subsequent Writ Petition, NMMC created a detailed catalogue of non-compliant buildings after an extensive survey. NMMC urged occupants to secure OCs promptly to prevent enforcement actions. Following the high court's directive dated Oct 25, 2024, authorities conducted comprehensive surveys to identify such buildings operating without occupancy certificates despite having construction commencement approvals. The NMMC has now published details of properties in their records that are operational without the necessary occupancy certificates, despite possessing construction commencement authorisations. The civic body highlighted that these buildings and societies are operating in violation of established protocols. This announcement serves as a crucial notice to inhabitants and proprietors of the 2,111 identified properties. It stresses that acquiring an occupancy certificate is mandatory for all buildings within NMMC boundaries before occupation. "The concerned parties are advised to submit their applications seeking occupancy certificates to the Town Planning Department promptly. The civic administration hereby notifies that failure to comply will result in enforcement actions under the Maharashtra Regional Planning and Town Planning Act, 1966, implemented through the designated officer," said NMMC Commissioner and Administrator Kailas Shinde. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The municipal authority strongly encourages all involved parties to fulfil this regulatory requirement to ensure adherence to building safety and occupancy norms. This initiative aims to maintain proper records and compliance with building regulations within the municipal limits. "This is a sheer lapse on the part of the civic administration and the civic body has to fix the responsibility on the ward officers of respective wards for dereliction of duties," said an alert resident, Sameer Tupe.
