Toyota Chairman Expresses Willingness to Import Firm's U.S.-Made Vehicles to Japan; Sees Chance to Increase Model Choices

Toyota Motor Corp. Chairman Akio Toyoda told reporters on Saturday in Hita, Oita Prefecture, that he is willing to import to Japan the company's vehicles manufactured in the United States in the wake a Japan-U.S. agreement in bilateral tariff negotiations. 'There are many car models that are not sold in Japan,' Toyoda said. Although he declined to name specific models to be imported to Japan, it is believed that he is considering the Camry sedan, which is no longer manufactured and sold in Japan, and pickup truck models. As a result of the agreement, U.S.-made passenger cars whose safety is secured under Japanese standards can be imported without undergoing additional safety tests. Toyoda's remark is based on this aspect of the deal. If Toyota imports its own products manufactured in the United States to Japan, it is possible that the trade deficit with the United States will be reduced. Because the range of choices will increase as a result of the tariff agreement that makes it easier to import U.S.-made cars, 'It's good for consumers,' Toyoda said.

Toyota to Continue Loan of Century Convertible for Sumo Tournament Victory Parades

Toyota Motor Corp. has said that it intends to continue having a special edition of its Century convertible used in sumo tournament victory parades. The automaker revealed the plan on Saturday ahead of the opening of the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on Sunday. During a general shareholder meeting on June 12, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda had mentioned the possibility of suspending the loan of the car for such victory parades. The special edition of its flagship Century was developed after former yokozuna Hakuho, who has a connection with Toyoda, proposed the development of such a car when he was the Miyagino stablemaster. The convertible is designed to prevent its body from sinking even when ridden in by heavy sumo wrestlers, such as by strengthening the suspension springs. The car has been used by the winning wrestler since the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament in 2024, but the automaker has ownership of the car. At the general shareholder meeting, Toyoda referred to the Japan Sumo Association's handling of Hakuho who left the association in June, saying: 'He is a great yokozuna who has supported sumo, which is a national sport. I honestly feel that this shouldn't be how [Hakuho's career in sumo] ends.' Toyoda also expressed his desire to suspend the loan of the Century. However, Toyoda was later informed by Hakuho that active sumo wrestlers are eager to ride in the Century should they win a tournament. That led the automaker to decide to continue the loan of the car, according to sources.

Man arrested on suspicion of fatally stabbing woman in her apartment

Police arrested a 20-year-old man on Monday on suspicion of murdering a 19-year-old woman, whose body was found with multiple stab wounds in her apartment in the city of Toyoda, Aichi Prefecture, according to local authorities. The Aichi Prefectural Police took the suspect, Rikuto Ando, a part-time worker from the city, into custody on Monday. He admitted to the charges during questioning, police said. Ando is accused of killing company employee Chiara Higashikawa. Investigators believe he fatally stabbed her multiple times in the chest with a kitchen knife sometime between Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Police discovered her body on Sunday, after Higashikawa's family reported to police through the building's property management company that they had been unable to reach her. Upon finding her body, authorities launched a murder investigation and identified Ando — believed to have been in a relationship with Higashikawa — through analyzing her personal connections. He was found in Kyoto Prefecture, where police brought him in for questioning before making the arrest. Translated by The Japan Times

Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda Paid 1.9 B. Yen in FY 2024

News from Japan Economy Jun 18, 2025 21:17 (JST) Nagoya, June 18 (Jiji Press)--Toyota Motor Corp. Chairman Akio Toyoda's executive compensation totaled 1,949 million yen in fiscal 2024, the highest ever for a Toyota executive, according to the automaker's securities report published Wednesday. Toyoda's annual pay grew by around 20 pct from 1,622 million yen the previous year. President Koji Sato's pay rose to 826 million yen from 623 million yen. The company said that it increased the chairman's pay as a result of discussions on compensation levels that align with his roles and responsibilities. In the year that ended this March, Toyota's consolidated sales reached a record high, but its operating and net profits both shrank for the first time in two years, due in part to a testing fraud scandal at subsidiary Hino Motors Ltd. EVs vs hybrids: Toyota Chairman's emission claims raise new questions

Akio Toyoda claimed that 27 million hybrid vehicles sold by Toyota have had the same emissions-reduction impact as nine million battery electric vehicles (BEVs) Notify me The question of whether electric vehicles (EVs) are cleaner than hybrid or internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles has, in the scientific community at least, been settled for some time. Numerous studies have concluded that EVs offer lower lifetime emissions than their petrol or hybrid counterparts. Yet, comments from Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda have reignited the debate—prompting a fresh examination of the facts and the context behind his remarks. Toyoda's hybrid argument In a recent interview with Automotive News, Akio Toyoda claimed that 27 million hybrid vehicles sold by Toyota have had the same emissions-reduction impact as nine million battery electric vehicles (BEVs). His key point was that, in Japan—where electricity is still largely generated from fossil fuels—producing and charging EVs could result in higher emissions than manufacturing and operating hybrids. Toyoda advocated for a 'multi-pathway" approach to decarbonisation, arguing that a diverse mix of powertrains—including more efficient petrol engines, hybrids, hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, and EVs—was a more realistic route to reducing global emissions. Also Read : Hybrids vs EVs: where should government put its money This multi-technology approach reflects Toyota's historical reserve towards an abrupt transition to all-electric power. But others argue that it will undermine the momentum required to shift away from oil, particularly when renewable energy capacity is growing very fast in much of the world. The carbon debt debate The key point of Toyoda's argument is the "carbon debt" that occurs in the making of EVs, especially when it comes to extracting and processing materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel that are used in the EV battery. In fact, several studies demonstrate that EVs have a greater emissions impact than hybrids or ICE vehicles at the starting gate. However, EVs offset that impact over time. In emissions on road use, they have a substantially lower emissions impact to begin with — especially so if being powered by renewables. Studies show that EVs are cleaner than a hybrid or ICE vehicle within two or three years of usage, depending on driving conditions and the electrical mix. Electricity mix matters Toyoda's case is strongest where coal or gas is prevalent in the power grid. Yet around the world, the landscape is shifting. India, for instance, is quickly expanding its solar and wind capacity, and the proportion of renewables in its electricity generation is increasing incrementally. As that trend persists, EVs' environmental benefit will grow. In addition, next-generation EVs are progressively being built with fresh battery chemistries such as lithium iron phosphate (LFP), which use less rare minerals and have lower production emissions. This implies future EVs could start their life cycle with far less carbon debt. Also Read : Hybrids or EV?: A major dilemma amongst global automotive players The role of hybrids and PHEVs Although battery-electric vehicles are generally regarded as the cleanest long-term option, hybrids and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) continue to play a vital bridging role—particularly in charging-scarce or patchy markets. PHEVs, if kept topped up, can run like electric cars on short journeys, lowering emissions for city driving. However, hybrids use petrol for a majority of their operation and don't cut out tailpipe emissions. Therefore, they're still an interim measure and essentially not a terminus in the path to decarbonised mobility. A global shift in perspective Toyoda's comments may indeed be true for the distinct energy realities of any one region but when it comes to the world, we risk losing sight of wilderness as colossal global trends prevail on us. Renewable energy generation is increasing, battery technology is advancing, and EVs are getting cheaper and more available. All of these components provide compelling new reasons for a stronger push toward electrification. Lastly, it is important to recognize that greenhouse gas emissions from petrol and diesel cars are still more than just emissions coming from the tail pipe. Greenhouse gases are also emitted from fossil fuel manufacture, processing, and transportation. These elements are sometimes excluded in the comparison of vehicle use.
