Rare Hulk stretch toy sells for thousands of pounds at auction

The figure, which appears to be one of only 30 known examples of the original Hulk stretch figure from 1979 known to still exist, was sold to a private collector on Saturday at the Excalibur Auctions Vintage Toys, Diecast Models & Model Railways auction for £3,900. Originally estimated between £3,000 and £5,000, the final sale set a new record in the UK for 'a figure of its kind', according to the auction house. Hulk stretch toy (Excalibur Auctions/PA) Jonathan Torode, from Excalibur Auctions, said: 'We were excited to offer this rare piece of nostalgia today, which set a UK auction record for a figure of its kind. 'We saw competitive bidding on the phones and internet, with it finally winning out to a UK private collector, where we hope it will be as cherished by its new owner as much as it has been by its previous one.' The character the toy is based on was created by the American comic book writer and producer Stan Lee and comic artist Jack Kirby, appearing in comic form for the first time in May 1962 under the Marvel name. He was later portrayed across TV, film, cartoon and video games as The Incredible Hulk – the alter ego of the physicist Dr Bruce Banner, who transformed into the superhero when he was angry or under extreme stress. A range of actors have since portrayed the character over the years, including Eric Bana in The Hulk (2003), Edward Norton in The Incredible Hulk (2008) and Mark Ruffalo in The Avengers (2012). Hulk stretch toy (Excalibur Auctions/PA) The toy was described as being in 'mint' condition after being kept out of the light, upright, and in its original packaging over the years. The Hulk figure also came with its original instructions and has never been offered for sale since it was bought in 1979, according to the auction house. Produced by renowned toymaker Denys Fisher (1918-2002), the figure came directly from its original owner who had begged his mother for one as a child. It was originally part of Kenner's 'Stretch Armstrong' line and was later licensed under Denys Fisher in the UK. Fisher, who developed the Spirograph, grew up in the Leeds area and later lived in Dumfries and Cumbria. The Hulk stretch figure was filled with corn syrup to enable it to stretch and was made using the same latex and gel moulds as those used for the Stretch Armstrong figure. However, its green skin colouring, the Hulk head and the Marvel branding set it apart from the Stretch Armstrong toy. Manufactured in Thorp Arch, Wetherby, the toy was sold in limited quantities only in the UK, through select mail order catalogues and a handful of shops.

Hasbro beats second-quarter expectations as gaming division offsets tariff-fueled toy slump

Toy and gaming giant Hasbro topped Wall Street expectations for the second quarter as strength in its digital gaming division helped offset continued weaknesses in its traditional toy business, weighed down by the impact of tariffs. "While tariffs represent a headwind for the business," Hasbro's CEO Chris Cocks said on the company's earnings call. "We are compensating for these costs through a combination of cost reductions, rebalancing our marketing spend, diversifying our supplier mix and implementing some targeted pricing actions." Shares fell roughly 4% in Wednesday morning trading. Here's how the company performed in the quarter ended June 29 compared to what Wall Street was expecting. The toy company reported a net loss of $855.8 million, or $6.10 per share, for the period, compared with net income of $138.5 million, or 99 cents per share, in the same quarter a year ago. Hasbro attributed the loss to a $1 billion goodwill impairment related to its consumer products segment and the impact of tariffs. Overall revenue declined 1% from the same quarter last year, but the company's gaming division continued to outperform. Wizards of the Coast and digital gaming brought in $522.4 million in sales, up 16% year over year. Hasbro cited strong demand for Magic: The Gathering and Monopoly Go! "This isn't just a one-off moment. It's a clear indication of the power of Magic's community," Cocks said. "Magic is stronger than ever, and we're just getting started." Meanwhile, the company's consumer products segment saw revenue fall 16% to $442.4 million, pressured by "anticipated softness in Toys driven by retailer order timing and geographic volatility," Hasbro said in the release. Revenue in the entertainment segment dropped 15% to $16 million. Hasbro raised its full-year guidance and now expects mid-single-digit revenue growth, adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or EBITDA, of between $1.17 billion and $1.2 billion, and adjusted operating margins of 22% to 23%.

B&M shoppers rush to snap up toys in their kids super sale from £1 – and people are already putting them away for Xmas

IT may be July but shoppers are already stocking up for Christmas thanks to a super sale at B&M. The high street retailer has slashed the prices of numerous toys in stores, with many being as low as £1. 4 4 One shopper took to the Facebook group Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK to show off the purse-friendly items they spotted, which could be perfect for kids. First up they spotted a Tiffany's pet shop which was reduced to just £3, and included pets and accessories. Next up were Ninja Turtles toys, which were down to £5, and had a number of characters to collect. There was also a £1 Paw Patrol adventure case, and a £1 remote controlled car. The bargain hunter also spotted Disney Lego down to £13.99 and £7 'magical' colouring sets, which looked like they could keep youngsters entertained for hours. She found the items in the Newcastle store, but people seemed keen to check their local stores too. Many people said they wanted to stock up ahead of December to be organised. One said: 'We need to go and start for Christmas.' Another added: 'We could call and get some for Christmas.' And a third commented: 'we should start our Xmas shopping lol.' 6 ways to get the biggest bargains in B&M Meanwhile, we shared how B&M has launched a huge Specialbuys sale as it tries to rival Aldi with prices starting at just 98p. The beloved bargain store started the discount bonanza on July 7, giving customers just a few days to wait. Products in store include a Kids Home 4 Cube Storage container for £12 and a blush double duvet set for £10. 4 4 The chain will also roll out a number of pet products including cat toys for 98p. B&M will also sell a stylish bedside drawer for £14, with similar products advertised on Dunelm for £79. Like Aldi, B&M said it's Specialbuy offers will only be available for a limited time so if you are keen to shop the products you will have to be quick. How to save money at B&M Shoppers have saved hundreds of pounds a year by using B&M's scanner app. The scanner lets you see if an item's price is cheaper than advertised on the shop floor label. Products that are typically discounted are seasonal items and old stock that B&M is trying to shift. The app is free to download off the B&M Stores mobile app via Google Play or the Apple App Store. According to one ex-B&M manager, you'll want to visit your local branch at 10am on a Wednesday too. Here's how you can join the B&M bargain hunt: Download the B&M app for free on any smartphone with an App Store or Google Play. Once you've installed it on your device, click on the option labelled "more" on the bottom, right-hand side of the app home page. You'll then find an option that says "barcode scanner". Click on this and you'll open a camera screen. Use the camera to hover over the barcode of the product you wish to check. If the price comes up as lower, take it to the cash desk and it will automatically scan at the lower price. You don't need to sign up to the B&M app to use the barcode scanner.
