'Poona Margham': From guns to growth, 1,400 former Maoists embrace peace in Chhattisgarh's Bastar

RAIPUR: In the deep forests of Bastar, once synonymous with gunfire, ambushes, and shadowy Maoist hideouts, a quiet revolution is taking shape. It's not being fought with rifles, but with hope, skill, and second chances. And at the heart of this transformation lies 'Poona Margham' (New Path), a grassroots rehabilitation campaign that's helping former insurgents find their way back to society. Launched across all seven Maoist-affected districts of the Bastar Range, 'Poona Margham: 'Rehabilitation for Social Reintegration' has seen an unprecedented 1,400 Maoists surrender and rejoin the mainstream in just 18 months, making it one of India's most significant peacebuilding efforts in recent memory. Bastar IG P Sundarraj said, 'Poona Margham is more than laying down arms. It's about picking up life again.' Poona Margham offers a genuine opportunity for former cadres, many of them young men and women radicalized in their teens, to reclaim their identities, reconnect with families, and lead lives of dignity and self-reliance, Bastar police said. From PLGA to Plough: Changing Roles, Changing Lives In districts like Sukma, Bijapur, and Dantewada, where red flags once marked Maoist strongholds, young people are now seen welding machines in training centres, growing vegetables in community gardens, or attending tailoring classes at newly built skill hubs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Successful Way of Intraday Trading is "Market Profile" TradeWise Learn More Undo Take Rahul, for instance — once a PLGA platoon member responsible for carrying out ambushes on CRPF convoys. Today, he runs a small motorbike repair shop in Narayanpur and helps the local administration identify vulnerable youth at risk of radicalisation. 'The gun only gave me fear. This wrench gives me freedom,' he says, tightening the bolt on a customer's wheel. Inspector General of Police, Bastar Range, P Sundarraj, who has been instrumental in shaping Poona Margham, describes the initiative not just as a security measure but as 'a moral mission.' 'Poona Margham is about more than laying down arms. It's about picking up life again. It shows that positive change is not only possible, it is happening, here and now,' he says. 'The Maoist ideology has become directionless. Today, those who once spread fear are helping us build roads, schools, and even peace committees.' IG said. Under the government's Surrender and Rehabilitation Policy 2025, all former Maoists are offered skill development training in trades like carpentry, electrical work, agriculture, animal husbandry, financial assistance for starting small businesses, psychological counselling and social reintegration support and secure housing and access to health services.

Italy constitutional court says non-biological mother in same-sex union entitled to paternity leave

Italy constitutional court says non-biological mother in same-sex union entitled to paternity leave ROME: Italy's constitutional court has ruled that the non-biological mother in a same-sex union is entitled to paternity leave, equating her role with that of the father and therefore entitled to bonding time with a newborn. The court found Monday that a 2001 decree on parental leave was unconstitutional because it didn't recognize that the non-biological mother in a lesbian civil union was also entitled to Italy's mandatory 10-day paternity leave. The court argued that the child's interest in having time with both parents, and the parents responsibilities, didn't depend on their sexual orientation. It's the second ruling in as many months hailed by LGBTQ+ activists amid efforts by the far-right-led government of Premier Giorgia Meloni to crack down on surrogacy and promote traditional family values. In May, the constitutional court ruled that two women can register as parents of a child on a birth certificate, saying recognition of parental rights can't be restricted to the biological mother alone in families with same-sex parents. Italy has strong restrictions on IVF and has had a ban on surrogacy since 2004. Last year, under the Meloni government, the country expanded the ban to criminalize Italians who go abroad to have children through surrogacy. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Book Your Daily Profit By 11 AM With This Superclass By Mr. Bala TradeWise Learn More Undo Monday's ruling addresses women who have gone abroad for legally procured IVF treatments. As with the May ruling, the association Pro Life and Family criticized the court's decision as "ridiculous," citing it as further evidence of how "gender craziness" was impacting Italy's social and legal order. Lawmaker Alessandro Zan, who has long pushed for greater LGBTQ+ rights in Italy, hailed the ruling as an historic end to an "unjust and cruel discrimination." "Justice reminds the government of a simple principle: love is family, and every boy and girl is entitled to the care and protection of both parents, without discrimination," he said in a social media post.

Learning these 5 international languages can boost your global employability

In today's borderless job market, having a foreign language on your resume is more than a nice-to-have: it's often a decisive advantage. Whether you want to study abroad, work with international clients, or lead cross-cultural teams, mastering an international language can significantly improve your career prospects. Fluency in a foreign tongue not only enhances communication, but it also shows cultural sensitivity, adaptability, and global readiness. Here's a closer look at five international languages that are consistently valued by employers around the world: Mandarin Chinese Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the world, and it plays a pivotal role in international business and diplomacy, particularly across Asia, Africa, and parts of Latin America. As China continues to dominate global manufacturing, supply chains, and technological innovation, Mandarin proficiency offers a competitive edge in industries like international trade, technology, and finance. Its complexity makes it less commonly mastered by non-native speakers, which adds to its value. Employers often see Mandarin speakers as rare, high-potential assets for navigating Asia-facing operations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Live Update: The Strategy Uses By Successful Intraday Trader TradeWise Learn More Undo Spanish Spoken across more than 20 countries, Spanish is the second most spoken native language globally and a key language across both North and South America. With a growing Spanish-speaking population in the U.S. and strong economic activity in Latin America, knowing Spanish opens up careers in customer engagement, healthcare, education, tourism, and international development. It's especially powerful in roles that require human interaction, storytelling, or outreach, such as journalism, diplomacy, and social impact. Spanish doesn't just make you employable, it makes you relatable to vast audiences and communities. French French holds official language status in 29 countries and is widely spoken across Europe, Africa, and parts of North America. It is also a working language for major international bodies like the United Nations , NATO, and the International Monetary Fund. That makes it a crucial tool for professionals in diplomacy, development, global business, hospitality, and luxury goods. Whether you're negotiating with African startups, working with European policymakers, or collaborating with Canadian partners, French fluency can fast-track your career in environments that value both communication and cultural nuance. German German is the most widely spoken native language in Europe and a gateway to one of the world's strongest economies. With Germany's reputation for precision, quality, and innovation, the language is essential in fields like mechanical engineering, renewable energy, finance, and industrial design. Knowing German helps professionals tap into research hubs, technical universities, and multinational corporations with roots in Central Europe. In an increasingly STEM-driven world, German often acts as the language of innovation and applied science, making it a valuable asset for those pursuing technical careers. Japanese Japan remains a global leader in advanced technology, robotics, and industrial design. Its companies, many of which have growing partnerships across Asia and the world, place high value on cultural fluency, attention to detail, and long-term business relationships. For professionals in R&D, tech, automotive design, and precision manufacturing, learning Japanese can unlock access to coveted roles and build trust in business ecosystems where language and protocol matter deeply. As economic ties between Japan and countries like India, Australia, and the U.S. continue to strengthen, Japanese language skills are gaining relevance even beyond Japan's borders. Honorable mentions Arabic is a key language across the Middle East and North Africa, particularly in sectors such as energy, diplomacy, defense, and Islamic finance. It's especially valued by global companies and development organizations working in oil-rich or geopolitically strategic regions. Portuguese is another language on the rise, thanks to Brazil's prominence in agriculture, natural resources, and emerging markets. It's also spoken in parts of Africa and Europe, making it useful for professionals engaged in South-South cooperation, sustainability, and global trade. Think global, speak global Language learning isn't just about speaking, it's about thinking. Studies show that multilingual individuals tend to develop stronger cognitive skills, greater empathy, and better problem-solving abilities. In an age where AI can translate words but not context, human fluency still wins. From corporate boardrooms to humanitarian missions, from product design to global marketing, knowing another language signals more than capability, it shows curiosity, openness, and global vision. What's more, bilingual and multilingual professionals often command higher salaries, especially in roles that involve negotiation, stakeholder management, or cross-border collaboration. The world of work is changing fast, and so is the definition of a competitive professional. Learning an international language is one of the most future-focused investments you can make. It connects you to new markets, new people, and new possibilities. TOI Education is on WhatsApp now. Follow us here . Ready to navigate global policies? Secure your overseas future.
