Newcastle's SIX missed summer transfer targets - as Man City set to beat them to a seventh
Newcastle have endured a frustrating summer in the transfer market and now look set to miss out on James Trafford, with Man City in talks to sign the Burnley goalkeeper Newcastle are facing yet another significant setback on the transfer front with their long-term goalkeeper target, James Trafford, now likely to re-join Manchester City. The Magpies have been courting Trafford, 22, for over 12 months and came close to striking a deal for the Burnley goalkeeper last summer. Talks over a switch were resurrected earlier this summer despite the Clarets' promotion to the Premier League with Newcastle in pole position to clinch a deal for the youngster. Unfortunately for Newcastle, Manchester City have a buyback clause in place as part of the deal that took Trafford to Turf Moor back in the summer of 2023. And with uncertainty over the future of Ederson, City are now in talks with Burnley and favourites to sign Trafford. As outlined by The Telegraph, failure to sign Trafford would represent a SEVENTH summer transfer snub for Newcastle, who have missed out on lots of their top targets. Liam Delap and Joao Pedro were among the players Newcastle fancied signing to bolster their attack, only for both to join Chelsea. Bryan Mbeumo was also identified as a primary target after a stellar season with Brentford. But the Cameroon star, like another Magpies target in Matheus Cunha, has agreed to join Manchester United. Newcastle also missed out on a deal for Dean Huijsen who swapped Bournemouth for Real Madrid, while their chances of signing Hugo Ekitike have gone up in smoke now that Liverpool are advancing in talks to sign the Frenchman. Failure to clinch Trafford's signature after weeks of talks would mean Newcastle missing out on a SEVENTH transfer target during what has been a rotten summer window for the Toon Army. Eddie Howe shed some light on Newcastle's frustrations in the transfer market after Saturday's 4-0 loss against Celtic in a friendly. The Magpies boss said: 'My wish was for us to do our business early and we certainly tried, but it wasn't to be. 'We've had a frustrating time in terms of losing targets to other clubs. I'd be very open with that. That's happened on several occasions. You just have to accept it. In order for a transfer to really work, in my opinion, the player has to be desperate to come to your club. If we don't get that, the transfer doesn't work. 'We're seeking players that are good enough, that are desperate to come, and that can make the difference that they're in short supply for us. We're confident that we can try and get some more players in to strengthen the depth of the squad. We're certainly aware that we need to and we're trying as hard as we can to do that.'

Managing Newcastle United as Benjamin Sesko call made and Eddie Howe makes £40m pivot
It's been a quiet transfer window for Newcastle United thus far with Eddie Howe having to deal with Alexander Isak's uncertain future while aiming to improve his attacking options It's been a frustrating first half of the summer transfer window for Newcastle United. Only one senior addition has been made to Eddie Howe 's squad ahead of a new Premier League season where the Magpies are set to compete in the UEFA Champions League once again. While the club bolstered their frontline with the £55million signing of Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest earlier this month, the Swede is so far the only first-team signing that has arrived at St. James' Park. The uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak, who was the subject of an approach from Liverpool, and the failed move for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, who is closing in on a move to the Reds, has left them back at square one. The Magpies are also in need of a new goalkeeper with all five at the club over the age of 32, and they face a similar situation in defence with six of their defenders over 30. Mirror Football examines who Newcastle might well focus their energy on to sign, which includes a £40m shot-stopper and a potential Isak replacement worth £78m. £40m goalkeeper pivot Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford was a player the Magpies were keen to sign last season but were forced to pull out of a deal due to PSR issues. The young England star enjoyed a record-breaking season in the Championship, where he kept 29 clean sheets and conceded just 16 goals as the Clarets earned promotion back to the Premier League. Remaining a player of interest, Newcastle have returned to the bargaining table to secure a move for Trafford - but their efforts have been put in serious doubt thanks to the reemergence of Manchester City. The Citizens are keen to activate their buy-back clause to sign their former academy graduate. Trafford - who spent six years in City's academy - is being touted as a replacement for Ederson, who, according to reports in Turkey, has agreed personal terms with Galatasaray. While it looks further frustration for Howe, Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier has already been named as an alternative target, and potentially a more promising one anyway. Also valued at £40m, the Frenchman was voted Ligue 1 goalkeeper of the year last season. The 23-year-old kept 11 clean sheets, just one less than league-leading Brice Samba. He could prove to be a shrewd signing for the Magpies, despite Trafford, who struggled in the Premier League at his last attempt, being prioritised. Top defensive target secured Bolstering their defensive ranks is also high on Howe's agenda, especially with the injury-plagued record of Sven Botman. After appearing in 44 games during his debut season in England, the Dutchman has played in a combined 32 in his next two campaigns due to suffering serious knee injuries. Botman's unreliability and Newcastle's lack of younger options in their defence has led them to build a shortlist of Nicola Savona, Giorgio Scalvini and Cesar Tarrega, according to Sky Sports. It's Juventus defender Savona who is said to be at the top of Howe's list, despite suffering an ankle injury against Manchester City in the Club World Cup. The 22-year-old, who made 28 appearances for the Old Lady this past season, played at right back for the majority of those games but transitioned into a centre-back in the business end of the season. Despite reports suggesting he'll be out of action until mid-September, he can still make the move to Tyneside with one eye very much on his future prospects. An offer in the region of £20m could be enough to secure his signature. If not, fellow Italian Scalvini, 21, missed the second half of last season for Atalanta but is set to be fit for the new season, while Spaniard Tarrega, 23, has established himself as first-choice for Valencia. Attacking addition conundrum Newcastle's striker dilemma is a complex one and currently shows no signs of subsiding. The club were hoping to make it three times lucky in signing Ekitike this month. After having gone in for him on two separate occasions in recent years but to no avail, they attempted to lure him away from Frankfurt with a £70m bid that was swiftly rejected by the Bundesliga side. The Frenchman is now set to complete a move to Liverpool with Newcastle forced to look for alternatives, one potentially coming in the form of Brentford's Yoane Wissa. However, with Bryan Mbeumo expected to seal a move to Manchester United in a £71m transfer, the west Londoners could be reluctant to part with their striker, who is also subject to interest from Tottenham where he could reunite with former boss Thomas Frank. With the striker options drying up, Newcastle have been linked with a move for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, who is valued at £78m. The Slovenian was favoured by Arsenal but the Gunners have instead opted to pursue Viktor Gyokeres. Despite his hefty valuation, Newcastle may opt to pay the high fee to secure a replacement for Isak, with speculation continuing to grow after his omission in their 4-0 pre-season loss to Celtic on Saturday. Howe admitted he left the Swede at home due to the overwhelming rumours before admitting he'd talked to him about his future. "I chose to send him home," Howe said. "The last thing Alex wants if he is not playing is to be sat in the stand and under that scrutiny, then if he wasn't going to play today, we mutually agreed he shouldn't be here. "Yes, I've had discussions with him, but that's not abnormal," he added. "I respect a player's career and how short it is. Alex has been really good, he's trained really well and I realise there'll be noise around him." With his move to Liverpool now seemingly out of the equation due to Ekitike, it looks likely that Isak will be staying at St James' Park for the foreseeable. But adding Sesko to the ranks to play alongside him - and eventually fill his boots - might well be a long-term investment worth making.

Ederson 'reaches agreement' on stunning Man City exit as replacement keeper picked
Manchester City could lose their first-choice goalkeeper this summer with Ederson already agreeing personal terms with Galatasaray ahead of a potential transfer Manchester City are advancing in talks to re-sign James Trafford from Burnley with Ederson looking likely to exit The Etihad following talks over a transfer to Galatasaray. The former Premier League champions have already been active in the summer transfer window, bringing in five new signings. But a new first-choice goalkeeper could be on the cards amid interest in Ederson from Galatasaray, who have already held talks with the 31-year-old. Ederson was heavily linked with a shock move to the Saudi Pro League last summer only to end up staying put. But a move does appear to be on the cards ahead of the 2025-26 campaign, with reports from Turkey claiming the Brazil international has reached an agreement on personal terms with Galatasaray. The Turkish giants are poised to open talks with City over a transfer fee to conclude a deal which would bring Ederson's eight-year stay in Manchester to an end. Losing Ederson's services would be a major blow for Pep Guardiola and City, who are looking to bounce back in the new season after relinquishing their title to Liverpool last term. Crucially, though, they have already opened negotiations with Burnley over a deal which would see Trafford, 22, head back to The Etihad two years after leaving the club permanently. Sky Sports have confirmed that City are trying to negotiate on the £40million buyback fee that was agreed between the two clubs back in the summer of 2023 when Trafford moved to Turf Moor. Trafford has gone on to establish himself as one of England's top young goalkeepers since heading to Burnley and has attracted transfer interest from Newcastle after a stellar 2024-25 campaign in the Championship. The Magpies had been favourites to land Trafford despite seeing a £27m bid for the keeper turned down last month. However, City are now seemingly in pole position to land their former academy graduate, who left the club without making a single senior appearance. Intriguingly, Stefan Ortega, City's current No 2, could be an option for Burnley if they do lose Trafford this summer. The Clarets are gearing up for life back in the Premier League after finishing second in the Championship last term. Musician's ‘unusual tiredness' turned out to be bowel cancer
A musician, who found himself getting so tired he was regularly falling asleep during the day, was shocked to discover he had bowel cancer. Richard Sanderson Xerri, 45, a dad-of-two, said he didn't go to his doctor as he didn't think his tiredness was serious enough to bother a GP. But after playing at a wedding and being extremely exhausted the next day, his wife Eirian took him to a walk-in clinic which led to a diagnosis that saved his life. Now the couple are sharing their experience to help others understand and seek medical advice sooner. Richard, from Worsley, began feeling unusually lethargic in August 2024, but assumed it was down to work-related fatigue. A music teacher and performer, he said the tiredness became overwhelming. He said: 'When I got in from work, I'd pull up on the drive and be exhausted. I had no idea how I'd even driven home. 'Then one weekend I played a wedding and the next day I couldn't get off the sofa. My wife took me to Trafford Urgent Care Centre. I thought it might be something like low iron, but I never suspected cancer!' Richard was referred to Wythenshawe Hospital for further investigation where he was given a colonoscopy and an endoscopy. These are procedures that allow doctors to look inside parts of your digestive system using a flexible tube with a camera. He said: 'I was terrified. I didn't want the camera tests. I thought there was no point. But my wife insisted and thank goodness she did.' A tumour was found tucked in his bowel during the colonoscopy and Richard says 'that colonoscopy saved my life'. (Image: The Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance) A biopsy showed the tumour was cancerous, but Richard and Eirian remained optimistic after hearing it had been detected early. Just 10 days later, Richard had an operation to remove a third of his intestine via keyhole surgery. He said: 'We were told it was early stage. I was terrified hearing the C word, but I believed we could beat it. 'I was amazed that they could do it by keyhole surgery and luckily I didn't need a stoma bag due to where the tumour was. I was back home a few days later starting recovery.' With support from Macmillan nurses, Richard and his wife explained the diagnosis to Richard's two children, then aged nine and 12. He said: 'We were honest but focused on the positives. The nurse's advice really helped.' After his surgery Richard needed chemotherapy as tests showed his tumour had been quite aggressive. He found chemo quite hard especially how cold it felt for his hands. He said: 'I was worried about nerve damage in my hands. But the nurses helped with hot water bottles and put me at ease.' Now recovering, Richard resumed playing the violin and has just begun a slow phase return to his teaching job with One Education Music in Manchester. He said: 'The NHS has been phenomenal. My message is simple: don't ignore the signs or think the only sign for bowel cancer is blood in your poo. It's better to check and be wrong than miss something serious. We are so lucky to have the NHS.' Roger Prudham, Clinical Lead for Bowel Cancer at Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance, said: 'It's always important to see your GP if you have non-specific symptoms like extreme fatigue to get it checked out. The chances are it won't be cancer, but it is always best to rule it out.' (Image: The Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance) Common symptoms for bowel cancer include blood in your poo but other symptoms may include: changes in your poo, such as having softer poo, diarrhoea or constipation that is not usual for you needing to poo more or less often than usual for you blood in your poo bleeding from your bottom often feeling like you need to poo, even if you've just been to the toilet tummy pain a lump in your tummy bloating losing weight without trying feeling very tired or short of breath – these are signs of anaemia, which can be caused by bowel cancer Find out more at: Symptoms of bowel cancer - NHS
