A community-led procession through the Gorbals will next month officially reopen Glasgow's Citizens Theatre after a seven-year closure. An official opening date of 23 August has now been set for the long-shuttered venue, with a planned programme of events dubbed the theatre's Homecoming celebrations. The theatre will then remain open for a full weekend of free celebratory activities, followed by ten days of bookable workshops and special events. The theatre has undergone a transformational, multi-million pound refurbishment since 2018, the first since the category B-listed building began life as a working theatre in 1878. Initially slated for reopening in 2021, the project was delayed by the pandemic and complications with the renovation. Final costs are believed to be more than £30 million, with the Scottish Government forced to step in at the end of last year to plug an £8m funding shortfall which MSPs warned could put the theatre's future at risk. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Citizens Theatre is set to re-open in August following a seven-year refurbishment In September, Small Acts of Love, a collaboration by playwright Frances Poet and composer Ricky Ross of Deacon Blue focusing on bonds formed by the Lockerbie bombing, will be the first play performed to an audience since the refurbishment. In October, the new 150-seat Studio Theatre is opened with two productions devised and presented by the theatre's Participate groups – Close by the Young Co, which opens on 8 October, and Making Your Mark by the Citz Community Collective, which opens on 22 October. Catrin Evans, participate director, Citizens Theatre, said: 'This Homecoming is inspired by our fantastic new building that we know so many people are keen to get inside - but it's also about so much more. It's about reconnecting with our neighbours, welcoming new voices, and celebrating creativity itself as a form of community-building. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'We're offering a range of activities so that everyone and anyone can step into the Citizens Theatre, try something new, take themselves on a journey and feel that this space belongs to them. Whether it's your first time through the doors or you've been part of the Citz story for years, we can't wait to welcome you home.' An additional 200 seats have been installed in the main auditorium, taking the total capacity to 650, both by expanding the stalls area, which has seen its central aisle removed and by replacing bench seating in the upper dress circle - which was rarely previously used due to a poor sight line to the stage - with full, banked seating. The building's accessibility has also been improved, along with the creation of a new foyer area. Kate Denby, executive director of Citizens Theatre, said: 'The reopening of the Citizens Theatre marks a hugely significant moment – not just for the building, but for everyone who holds this theatre close to their heart. This Homecoming year is a celebration of creativity, community, and connection. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad

He reportedly lost control of his bike after hitting a speed bump and struck his head on a barrier. Unfortunately, it was confirmed this week that Privitera passed away from the injuries sustained in this accident. Privitera, a member of the Hagens Berman Jayco team, reportedly crashed on a descent of about 35 kilometers. He lost his helmet when the accident occurred. "Samuele was and always will be the life and personality of this team," Hagens Berman Jayco team director Axel Merckx said. "This team has always been a small family, and moments like this are unimaginable. He was irreplaceable. His joy, his spirit, his kindness, was always a bright light to whatever room or race that he was in at that moment. To lose him is devastating beyond words." Tour de France riders honored Privitera's memory on Thursday, applauding for him during the 12th stage. "It's really sad to lose another young talent today. It's devastating," Tour de France rider Tadej Pogacar said. "It is one of the most dangerous sports in the world, I think, and the risk that we are taking sometimes is too far. Twerk instructor, 33, dies after being sliced by boat propeller during trip with friends to world-famous beauty spot

A TWERK instructor has died after being sliced by a boat propeller in a horror accident at a world-famous beauty spot. Julina de Lannoy, 33, was enjoying a boat ride with six friends on Saturday when tragedy struck. 7 7 The group had rented a vessel on Italy's scenic Lake Como and were cruising at a gentle pace. It was when another boat, piloted by a 44-year-old local man, allegedly smashed into them head-on, throwing Julina into the water. The dancer from Aruba was critically injured by the propeller of one of the boats, sustaining a gruesome leg wound. She was rushed to a nearby dock where emergency crews desperately tried to revive her before handing her over to paramedics. Julina arrived at a local hospital in critical condition, and doctors were unable to save her. The man at the helm of the other boat was also rushed to hospital and given a breathalyser test. He remained under observation as of Sunday. Cops have seized both boats and are now investigating whether a maneuvering error was behind the fatal crash. Julina's heartbroken friends said their boat had reportedly been moving slowly when the horror collision took place. Tourist bitten by shark while snorkeling Known for her electric energy and passion for dance, Julina had built a following across Europe. After founding Caribbean Twerk Brussels in 2022, she taught classes in Belgium and Amsterdam, also performing regularly. She held a senior role at a department store in Brussels and began teaching twerk classes in 2020 in Luxembourg. In Aruba, Julina had worked for the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls - a leadership organisation for young women aged 11-20. She is survived by her mother, Lisa, and her sister, Kiana. A spokesperson said: 'Julina exemplified the true values of love, service, and sisterhood. 'Her joy was contagious, and her presence was a gift to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.' 7 7 7 Located in the beautiful region of Lombardy, Lake Como welcomes a whopping 1.4million people each year. Locals have warned that this summer has been the busiest yet on the lake, fuelling fears of rising boating accidents. It comes after a Brazilian dancer was found dead in Indonesia after being trapped in an active volcano for four days. Juliana Marins, 26, slipped and fell more than 1,600 feet from a hiking trail along the crater rim of Mount Rinjani in June. She had been backpacking through Southeast Asia since February, documenting her solo trip on social media. Meanwhile, a 23-year-old newlywed was struck and killed by lightning on the beach as her husband prepared to take a photo. Stephany Lucero Elvir, a pharmacist from Honduras, collapsed after the thunderbolt hit. Her husband, Cristhian Samir Álvarez Molina, survived but was also injured in the freak strike.

Heartbreaking photo shows entire cabin of Camp Mystic girls and counselors who were washed away

A heartbreaking photo shows an entire cabin of Camp Mystic girls and counselors who were washed away in the horrific Texas floods. The 13 girls and two counselors were staying in Camp Mystic's Bubble Inn cabin, which, alongside the Twins cabin, housed the youngest of the girls, aged 8 to 10. The cabins were less than 500 feet from the river and thus took in water from two directions - the Guadalupe river and a creek nearby, making the girls' escape particularly challenging. The bodies of nine of the girls and counselor Chloe Childress, 18, have been found as of Monday morning, while counselor Katherine Ferruzzo and four campers remain missing. Those confirmed dead are: Janie Hunt, Margaret Bellows, Lila Bonner, Lainey Landry, Sarah Marsh, Linnie McCown, Winne Naylor, Eloise Peck, Renee Smajstrla and Mary Stevens. The co-owner of the Christian girls camp, Dick Eastland, reportedly died while trying to save the girls in the Twins and Bubble Inn cabins. His body was found in a black SUV alongside those of three girls he had tried to save, reported The Washington Post. But many of the girls in the cabins were unable to flee as the water rose 20 feet in just 90 minutes when the catastrophic floods hit on Friday morning. Camp Mystic confirmed Monday that at least 27 campers and counselors had died in the floods. 'We have been in communication with local and state authorities who are tirelessly deploying extensive resources to search for our missing girls,' the camp said in a statement posted on its website. 'We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from community, first responders, and officials at every level.' Families were allowed to look around the camp beginning Sunday morning. One girl was seen walking out of a building ringing a large bell in an attempt to find survivors, while a man whose daughter was rescued from a cabin on the highest point in the camp walked the riverbank looking in clumps of trees and under big rocks. A teenage girl had tears running down her face as they slowly drove away and she gazed through the open window at the wreckage. Across the state, the floods killed at least 82 people. Governor Greg Abbott said Sunday that a further 41 people confirmed to be unaccounted for across the state and more could be missing. In Kerr County, home to youth camps in the Texas Hill Country, searchers have found the bodies of 68 people, including 28 children, Sheriff Larry Leitha said Sunday afternoon. Fatalities in nearby counties brought the total number of deaths to 82 as of Sunday evening. Rescuers have continued maneuvering through challenging terrain filled with snakes as they look for the missing. The devastation along the Guadalupe River, outside of San Antonio, has drawn a massive search effort as officials face questions over their preparedness and the speed of their initial actions. Beyond the Camp Mystic campers unaccounted for, the number of missing from other nearby campgrounds and across the region had not been released. 'We don't even want to begin to estimate at this time,' Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice said Saturday, citing the likely influx of visitors during the July Fourth holiday. President Donald Trump signed a major disaster declaration Sunday for Kerr County and said he would likely visit Friday: 'I would have done it today, but we'd just be in their way.' 'It's a horrible thing that took place, absolutely horrible,' he told reporters.
