My favorite Denzel Washington movie just landed on Paramount Plus — you need to stream this crime thriller now
"Training Day" might be the best movie from the new shows and movies on Paramount Plus this month. Hopefully, you've seen this crime thriller or are at least familiar with it. It's centered around an incredible Denzel Washington performance that ultimately earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor and is my pick for Denzel's best performance of his career. His performance isn't the only great one in this movie either. Ethan Hawke is nearly as good and also earned an Oscar nomination for his performance. But if you remember any performance from this movie, it's probably Denzel's. That said, you might not remember this movie, or there's a chance you've never even seen it. "Training Day" only brought in around $105 million at the box office back in 2001, and it's now nearly 24 years old, meaning at least an entire generation of people might not even know this movie exists. But I'm here to fix that, because this crime thriller is a must-watch. Here's what "Training Day" is about and why you need to check out Denzel's greatest performance now that it's available to stream on Paramount Plus. "Training Day" stars Ethan Hawke as LAPD officer Jake Hoyt, who is trying to join the narcotics squad of Detective Alonzo Harris (Washington). To get the gig, he will need to ride along with Alonzo as his partner for a one-day trial evaluation. That ride-along comes with some serious risks. Alonzo's squad covers some of the most violent, gang-ridden neighborhoods of Los Angeles. As the pair goes around looking for crime, they come across everything from college kids buying marijuana to drug dealers carrying loaded guns. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. However, as the day goes on, Jake realizes that the most dangerous part of this gig might not be the crime in LA. It might just be his new partner. For the record, as much as I love this movie, it's not flawless. The plot pretty quickly devolves into something that requires suspension of disbelief. But Denzel's performance as Alonzo will make it incredibly easy to overlook these flaws, and you don't have to wait particularly long for him to start cooking. And once he gets going, he doesn't really stop. Again, Ethan Hawke is genuinely great in "Training Day," and maybe without him alongside Denzel, their performances become undone by the screenplay. But I'm convinced this would have been an incredible performance regardless of who Denzel was acting alongside. There's one scene in the movie — and if you've seen this crime thriller before, you'll know which one I'm talking about — where Jake catches some guys assaulting a girl in an alley. From the moment Alonzo comes up on them, it's probably around a four-minute scene and most of it is Denzel just ripping off incredible line after incredible line. Hawke may have two lines in the entire thing. But it doesn't matter that it's just Denzel doing his thing, because he's mesmerizing doing it. It's why you need to watch "Training Day" right now, and witness one of the greatest actors ever give the greatest performance of his career. Stream "Training Day" now on Paramount Plus Malcolm has been with Tom's Guide since 2022, and has been covering the latest in streaming shows and movies since 2023. He's not one to shy away from a hot take, including that "John Wick" is one of the four greatest films ever made. Here's what he's been watching lately:

Netflix fans loving 'must see' sci-fi thriller despite what reviews say
One fan described it as a 'hot mess' Netflix aficionados can't get enough of a 'hot mess' sci-fi thriller that's been described as a concoction of The Matrix, Avengers, and The Bourne saga. As it stands, Infinite has secured a spot within the top ten movies for UK viewers on Netflix, claiming the ninth position in the platform's film charts. Initially released in 2021 on various streaming platforms after its cinematic debut was postponed due to the Covid pandemic, Infinite first graced Prime Video before finding its new digital abode on Netflix. Adapted from D. Eric Maikranz's novel The Reincarnationist Papers, the movie was directed by Antoine Fuqua, celebrated for directing action-packed favourites like Training Day and The Equalizer, which both featured Denzel Washington. Starring Mark Wahlberg as Evan, a man gifted with memories of his past lives and holding the whereabouts of an apocalyptic device, he finds himself pursued by factions wanting the device for their own objectives, reports Surrey Live. Yet, despite Fuqua's notable filmography, Infinite didn't manage to charm critics, scraping together a paltry 17% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A viewer expressed their grievances online, stating: "This movie is a mix of The Bourne Identity, The Matrix, Avengers Infinity War rolled into one and it just one big hot mess." They continued: "It doesn't work at all! It's a damn shame too because you would think a movie directed by the same person who directed Training Day and The Equalizer (both great movies) would be good but you'd be wrong." Another cheekily claimed it's "the 'If Michael Bay directed a Christopher Nolan film' mashup we were all expecting." Yet, despite the mixed reviews, the film's current success on Netflix indicates it has found its audience. One advocate for the film remarked: "I really enjoyed this film. Simply for the odd story. The wonderful cheesiness that kept it feeling a bridge above a B-rated nature. I felt it was an A-." Someone else chimed in: "I'm glad I didn't listen to the reviews! This is a solid movie. I think we are all just spoiled. This is original, with great settings and special effects. Fun weapons. Excellent premise. It's not like any movie I've seen. If you like Kingsman movies, this should be up your alley. Not as funny, a bit silly in places, lots of action." Another person shared their enthusiasm, saying: "Awesome, suspenseful and edge of the seat entertainment. Has everything it needed to make it an instant classic. And leaves you wanting to see more. Great cast and a must see."

Eva Mendes recalls her "bonding experience" with Ryan Gosling when they started dating
Actress Eva Mendes recalled how she and Ryan Gosling bonded when they first started dating, reported People. "I always thought it was a Cuban thing that we love to clean, and we love a clean kitchen," said Mendes, adding, "Some of my best memories from when I was little are of my mom cleaning the house over the weekend. She'd be playing a record super loudly, and it would wake me up. There was the smell of Pine-Sol and the sounds of her singing to El Puma." Mendes started dating Gosling, 44, in 2011 while they starred together in 'The Place Beyond the Pines', she discovered the actor had a similar passion for cleanliness. "He would come over. He just loved it. When my family was around, we would literally take over the kitchen. It had to be clean." Mendes added, "It was a bonding experience." The Training Day star also spoke about the recent expansion of the Skura Style x Eva Mendes Collection, the lifestyle brand she co-owns. "I have my own packaging, which I'm just nuts for. It was so fun designing that," reported People. On talking abut her plans with daughters Esmeralda Amada, 10, and Amada Lee, 9, whom she shares with Gosling, Mendes indicated she's just happy to be by their side. "Summer is their time to be kids, and I'm really taking it in... I just want to be with them. Whatever I'm doing, as long as I'm with them and Ryan, of course, that's where I'm happiest," reported People. Mendes has focused on parenting since welcoming her first daughter, stepping away from acting since 2014's Gosling-directed Lost River, aside from voicing a character on the children's series Bluey.
