Bradford rail stations involved in easier-access trial for the blind

Visually impaired passengers are able to access train platforms more easily - including at Bradford Interchange and Bradford Forster Square - as part of a new trial. The scheme is enabling trial participants, who have been issued a temporary West Yorkshire travel pass ('MCard'), to use automated ticket gates. Visually impaired passengers, travelling with their English National Concessionary Travel Scheme pass, usually have to ask station staff for assistance in getting onto platforms. Ten people are taking part in the three-month pilot using the temporarily issued MCard. The trial began on Tuesday, July 1 at gated stations including Bradford Interchange, Bradford Forster Square, Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Leeds, and Wakefield Westgate. Passengers can still request support from station staff during the trial if they prefer. Kathryn Milner, a visually impaired passenger who helped raise awareness of access issues, said: "My independence is really important to me, and, as someone who regularly travels by train, I want to be able to get about without being hindered by a process that I know doesn't apply to me – just because I'm visually impaired." The participating train operators, LNER, Northern, and TransPennine Express, are working with West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Network Rail on the trial.
