Morocco bolsters care and management of stray dogs with new policies

A mutt with a blue tag clipped to her ear whimpers as she's lifted from a cage and carried to a surgery table for a spay and a rabies vaccine, two critical steps before she's released back onto the streets of Morocco's capital. The 'Beldi', as Moroccan street dogs are called, is among the hundreds taken from Rabat to a dog pound in a nearby forest. As part of an expanded 'Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate and Return' programme, dogs like her are examined, treated and ultimately released with tags that make clear they pose no danger. 'We have a problem: That's stray dogs. So we have to solve it, but in a way that respects animals,' said Mohamed Roudani, the director of the Public Health and Green Spaces Department in Morocco's Interior Ministry. A worker pets a dog at the centre. Morocco adopted 'Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate and Return,' or TVNR, in 2019. One facility has opened in Rabat and more are set to be launched in at least 14 other cities, aligning Morocco with recommendations from the World Organisation for Animal Health. The government has spent roughly US$23mil (RM98mil) over the past five years on animal control centres and programmes. Roudani said Morocco's updated approach balanced public safety, health and animal well- being. Local officials, he added, were eager to expand TVNR centres throughout the country. The centre is designed to gradually reduce stray dog population. Keeping them clean Though population estimates are challenging, based on samples of marked and tagged stray dogs, Moroccan officials believe they number between 1.2 to 1.5 million. Some neighbourhoods welcome and care for them collectively. However, others decry their presence as a scourge and note that more than 100,000 Moroccans have needed rabies vaccinations after attacks. A draft law is in the works that would require owners to vaccinate pets and impose penalties for animal abuse. On a visit organised for journalists to a TNVR centre in El Aarjate, enclosures for dogs appear spacious and orderly, with clean floors and the scent of disinfectant. Some staff members say they grow so attached to the dogs that they miss them when they're released to make space to treat incoming strays. Food and water bowls are refreshed regularly by staff who move between spaces, offering gentle words and careful handling. Some staff members say they grow so attached to the dogs that they miss them when they're released to make space to treat incoming strays. Veterinarians and doctors working for the Association for the Protection of Animals and Nature care for between 400 and 500 stray dogs from Rabat and surrounding cities. Dogs that veterinarians deem unhealthy or aggressive are euthanised using sodium pentobarbital, while the rest are released, unable to spread disease or reproduce. Youssef Lhor, a doctor and veterinarian, said that aggressive methods to cull dogs didn't effectively make communities safer from rabies or aggression. He said it made more sense to to try to have people coexist with dogs safely, noting that more than 200 had been released after treatment from the Rabat-area centre. 'Slaughtering dogs leads to nothing. This TNVR strategy is not a miracle solution, but it is an element that will add to every-thing else we're doing,' he said, referring to 'Treat, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return'. It's designed to gradually reduce the stray dog population while minimising the need for euthanasia. It's a programme that Morocco is eager to showcase after animal rights groups accused it of ramping up efforts to cull street dogs after being named co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup last year. Animal rights groups routinely use large sporting events to draw attention to their cause and similarly targeted Russia in the lead-up to the 2018 FIFA World Cup there. A worker and a vet pet a dog at a centre for neutering and vaccinating strays dogs on the outskirts of Rabat, Morocco. Publicity stunts? Citing unnamed sources and videos it said were shot in Morocco, the International Animal Welfare and Protection Coalition claimed in January that Morocco was exterminating three million dogs, particularly around cities where stadiums are being built. The allegations, reported widely by international media lacking a presence in Morocco, triggered anti-FIFA protests as far away as Ahmedabad, India. 'These dogs are being shot in the street, often in front of children, or dragged away with wire nooses to die slow, agonising deaths,' Ian Ward, the coalition's chairman, said in a statement. Moroccan officials vehemently deny the claims, say they're implementing the very programmes that activists propose, including TNVR. They rebuff the idea that any policy is related to the World Cup. Still, critics see their efforts as publicity stunts and are sceptical such programmes are as widespread as officials claim. Instances of mistreatment and euthanasia by gunshot have been reported in local media but Moroccan officials say, despite international attention, they're isolated incidents and don't reflect on-the-ground reality nationwide. – By SAM METZ/AP

Lululemon's viral tote just dropped in a new colour — here's why shoppers are obsessed

If there's one thing fashion lovers, gym-goers and jet-setters can all agree on, it's that a good tote bag is hard to find. You want something that looks luxe but doesn't scream 'trendy for five minutes,' something big enough to hold your laptop, water bottle and snacks (yes, snacks are non-negotiable!), but not so oversized it looks like you're moving out. Oh, and bonus points if it doesn't cost as much as a month's rent. Enter Lululemon's Classic Knit Tote Bag 18L, the latest viral accessory that's quietly becoming the bag of the summer. TikTok can't stop talking about it. Reddit's raving. And shoppers everywhere are double-taking because, well, this sleek tote could 100 per cent be mistaken for something straight off the runway. However, here's the plot twist: it's under $200, made with durable fabric and designed to handle real life. Shop in three colours: Tidewater Teal/Lavender Frost/Chrome (pictured here), French Press/Sand Trap/Antique White and Grey Eucalyptus/Jade Grey/Peroxide. Looks aside, this bag seriously delivers when it comes to function. With an 18L capacity, it can easily fit your laptop, gym clothes, snacks, beauty pouch and probably even a small dog (not recommended, but theoretically possible). It also features multiple interior and exterior pockets to keep your essentials organized — no more digging around blindly for your lip balm or earbuds. And let's talk materials: the water-repellent knit fabric means a little rain or a spilled latte isn't going to ruin your day (or your tote). It's strong, structured and wipes clean easily, which is exactly what you want in a daily carryall. While there are no reviews on Lululemon for this tote quite yet (it's brand new), the bag is certainly having its moment on TikTok. One shopper said, "the strap quality is sturdy," and another raved that it's 'literally so cute!' The smaller version of the bestselling tote is also roomy enough for everyday essentials. At $168, the Classic Knit Tote Bag 18L is definitely an investment, but compared to similar styles from luxury brands, it's a steal. It brings a high-end look to any outfit without the high-maintenance feel. If you're into bags that look expensive, work hard and effortlessly elevate every outfit, this one's worth the hype. Shop it while you can because something tells us this one won't stay in stock for long.

Fans buzz as Parent Trap star reunites with Lindsay Lohan in Freaky Friday 2

Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are reprising their roles in the long-awaited sequel to Freaky Friday, and fans can also expect a Parent Trap reunion in the long-anticipated film Fans are delighted by the long-anticipated reunion of Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis in the second Freaky Friday film, Freakier Friday, launching in August this year. But it seems they are not the only iconic duo teaming up once again; Lindsay's co-star from Parent Trap will also be starring in the sequel. Some 27 years since their epic filming adventure in the beloved Disney remake of Parent Trap, Elaine Hendrix - who played the fabulous yet villainous Meredith Blake - will be reuniting with Lohan. Hedrix told Entertainment Weekly how great it was to see Lindsay again; the pair did not stay in touch much post-Parent Trap as Lohan was just 11 years old at the time, while Hendrix was 26. ‌ But when Hendrix, now 54, got a call from Freakier Friday director Nisha Ganatra, it unexpectedly brought her and Lindsay back together. "I was like girl, you know I'll show up for you to do anything," Hendrix said she told Ganatra. Elaine says since film the pair got to spend a lot of time together and enjoying reminiscing. "Now, we're better about staying in touch with one another," Hendrix added. ‌ Earlier this year, Lohan shared a photo of herself on Instagram at the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. In the comment section, Hendrix replied: "Being young & beautiful is not a crime you know", a reference to a popular quote in Parent Trap where Meredith levels with Lohan's character. Fans are delighted after hearing about the pair's reunion in Freakier Friday. On X, people rushed to comment after a post was shared on Lindsay Lohan Fan Updates, and people have noticed Elaine in the trailer. @lavitalohan said: "Another surprise reunion? THE PARENT TRAP's Elaine Hendrix has reportedly joined the cast of FREAKIER FRIDAY!" "MEREDITH BLAKE IN FREAKIER FRIDAY?!" commented one. Another dubbed Hedrix's cameo role "awesome," while another insisted it is "iconic." "She's back for revenge," jokes another. "My girl hasn't aged one bit," observed one more. One other said: "Another iconic reunion! Elaine Hendrix in Freakier Friday is a perfect match! Can't wait to see her bring that magic back to the screen!." On TikTok, one fan said, "wait I'm obsessed," after hearing about the pair's reunion. ‌ What can we expect from Freakier Friday? In the original Freaky Friday released in 2003, Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) swapped places with her daughter, Anna (Lohan) and all sorts of shenanigans take place. The sequel is going a slightly different direction, taking place years after the first film. Anna is now grown up and has a daughter of her own, named Harper, played by Julia Butters. Harper is about to marry the dashing Eric (Manny Jacinto), however Harper doesn't get along with Eric's daughter, Lily (Sophia Hammons). Or at least, she doesn't until the girls switch bodies with Tess and Anna. ‌ Fans of the first film can expect to see the return of Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky and Rosalind Chao.. Plus extra stars include Vanessa Bayer, Julia Butters, Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Sophia Hammons. Freakier Friday will hit cinemas August 8, 2025.

Netflix is about to lose the wildest psychological thriller of 2024 — here's your last chance to stream it

"Trap" is one of 2024's more infamous releases; you don't need to look far to find plenty of critics and viewers telling you to steer clear of the M. Night Shyamalan thriller... but I'm no "Trap" denier. I saw this twisting thriller in theaters and left with a smile on my face; despite its flaws, "Trap" is a ton of fun. And, seeing as this movie is leaving Netflix very soon, now seems as good a time as any to recommend it to would-be viewers. Yes, now that we have Netflix's June schedule, we know that your last day to stream "Trap" on Netflix is Tuesday, June 10. As of the time of writing, that means you've got just one week left to stream "Trap" on Netflix, at the time of writing. If you need convincing, you can find a little more info about the movie — and why I think "Trap" is worth adding to your watchlist — below. "Trap" sees American firefighter and picture-perfect suburban dad Cooper Abbott (Josh Hartnett), taking his teen daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) to see her favorite popstar, Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan) in concert... where something sinister is about to go down. Turns out the cops believe that a grisly serial killer known as "The Butcher" is also in attendance, so they've got the whole place locked down to finally bring his reign of terror to an end. And given we learn Cooper's the one with a killer secret mere minutes into the film, that presents him with a major problem. How on earth is he going to make it out of the arena? Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. In addition to Hartnett, Donohue, and Shyamalan, "Trap" also stars Alison Pill, Hayley Mills, Jonathan Langdon, Marnie McPhail-Diamond, and Mark Bacolcol, among others. Look, I'm not entirely sure that "Trap" is actually a good movie, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a good time when I saw it in theaters. Chiefly, that's because of our protagonist. Josh Hartnett's playful performance is worth the price of admission alone. Watching Cooper puzzle out his predicament is a real treat precisely because Hartnett is so invested in the role. It's the same commitment that makes his recent action-comedy "Bullet Train" riff, "Fight or Flight" work so well. He's committed to doing as much as possible with this absurdly silly conceit. And, while "Trap" at times feels like little more than a way to promote Saleka's music career, when we're outside the concert hall, it's packed with increasingly absurd turns that make it worth sticking with. "Trap" is assuredly messy and will doubtless not work for everyone, but if you can revel in Hartnett's killer charisma and buy into campy storytelling, this is a entertaining ride that lives up to the "thriller" label. Critically, the reaction could politely be described as "mixed." At the time of writing, "Trap" currently holds a 57% critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a slightly higher 64% score from fellow moviegoers. As an example of what reviewers had to say, THR's Lovia Gyarkye described "Trap" as "a concert movie for Shyamalan's daughter [...] wrapped in a middling thriller kept afloat by a compelling performance from Josh Hartnett." Entertainment Weekly reviewer Jordan Hoffman called "Trap" Shyamalan's "most preposterous movie yet" and "a film mostly of surface pleasures," but adds "there's a lot of fun waiting to be had for those willing to check any large items like scrutiny or skepticism before entering the arena." Empire's Dan Jolin offers a more negative take, giving it a 2-star rating and calling it "an oddly inert wannabe nail-biter", summing "Trap" up as "an initially cool premise that goes nowhere interesting as it heads off somewhere else too quickly. Hartnett does his best, but director Shyamalan seems more interested in trying to convince us of his daughter's pop-star credentials." Nevertheless, I do think there's some fun to be had with "Trap," and if your interest is piqued, I'd strongly recommend streaming "Trap" on Netflix before it leaves the platform on June 10. Not convinced? We can still help you find something new to watch. Check out our round-up of the best movies on Netflix for tons more streaming recommendations perfect for your next movie night.
