Meta reportedly hires four more researchers from OpenAI

Ammon News - Looks like Meta isn't done poaching talent from OpenAI. Earlier this week, TechCrunch reported that Meta had hired influential OpenAI researcher Trapit Bansal, and according to The Wall Street Journal, it also hired three other researchers from the company. Now The Information is reporting four more Meta hires from OpenAI: Researchers Shengjia Zhao, Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi, and Hongyu Ren. This hiring spree comes after the April launch of Meta's Llama 4 AI models, which reportedly did not perform as well as CEO Mark Zuckerberg had hoped. (The company was also criticized over the version of Llama that it used for a popular benchmark.) There's been some back-and-forth between the two companies, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman suggesting that Meta was offering '$100 million signing bonuses' while adding that 'so far, none of our best people' have left. Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth then told employees that while senior leaders may have been offered that kind of money, 'the actual terms of the offer' were more complex than a simple one-time signing bonus.

Meta CTO: Sam Altman 'Dishonest' for $100M Bonus Claim

OpenAI's CEO said last week that Meta was trying to poach his employees with "$100 million signing bonuses," but Meta execs — and new hires — are refuting the claim. Meta's technology chief is calling OpenAI CEO Sam Altman "dishonest" for claiming that Meta is offering nine-figure compensation packages to new employees on its secretive AI superintelligence team. According to The Verge, at a company-wide all-hands meeting on Thursday, Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, pushed back against Altman's remarks last week that Meta was offering "$100 million signing bonuses" and "more than that" in compensation to poach OpenAI employees. "Sam is just being dishonest here," Bosworth, 43, said at the leaked meeting. "He's suggesting that we're doing this for every single person… Look, you guys, the market's hot. It's not that hot." Related: Meta Takes on ChatGPT By Releasing a Standalone AI App: 'A Long Journey' Altman, 40, said last week that he was "really happy" that none of OpenAI's "best people" had chosen to join Meta. Now, Bosworth says that OpenAI staff aren't joining Meta because Altman has been countering Meta's offers, "creating a small market" of possible employees to lead Meta's AI efforts. According to a Thursday TechCrunch report, AI researcher Trapit Bansal, who has been working at OpenAI since 2022, has left the company for Meta. A Wednesday report from The Wall Street Journal revealed that Meta poached three additional OpenAI researchers who worked at OpenAI's Zurich office: Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai. Beyer posted on X on Thursday that the trio did not receive $100 million signing bonuses, calling the rumor "fake news." hey all, couple quick notes: 1) yes, we will be joining Meta. 2) no, we did not get 100M sign-on, that's fake news. Excited about what's ahead though, will share more in due time! cc @__kolesnikov__ and @XiaohuaZhai. — Lucas Beyer (bl16) (@giffmana) June 26, 2025 Meta has also poached the CEO of $32 billion AI startup, Safe Superintelligence, Daniel Gross, and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman. Related: Meta Poaches the CEO of a $32 Billion AI Startup — After Trying to Buy the Company and Being Told No Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, 41, has recently doubled down on a push for superintelligence, AI that exceeds human intelligence in reasoning, memory, and knowledge. According to a Bloomberg report from earlier this month, Zuckerberg is assembling a team of around 50 experts to work on superintelligence with the goal of one day infusing it across the company's products, including the bestselling Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. Meta also made one of its largest deals yet this month, investing $14.3 billion in Scale AI, a startup that provides data to train AI systems. As part of the deal, Scale AI's 28-year-old CEO Alexandr Wang will join Meta in a leadership role on the superintelligence team. The investment caused Scale AI's valuation to more than double from $14 billion to $29 billion. AI voice cloning startup Play AI is also reportedly in talks with Meta about an acquisition, though the deal has yet to be publicly announced. Meta stock was up over 21% year-to-date at the time of writing. The company is one of the most valuable in the world, with a market capitalization of over $1.8 trillion. OpenAI was worth $300 billion as of late March.

California, the world's fourth largest economy, to charge road tax as people go electric, citizens furious

California, the fourth largest economy in the world, is planning to introduce a new road charge that would charge drivers per mile driven, a plan that has drawn criticism from California residents and politicians throughout the state, as per a report. California Eyes Per-Mile Road Tax The new proposal comes as California is expected to have a $5 billion shortfall in gas tax revenue over the next decade, according to a CBS8 News report. This is because electric and hybrid cars are quickly taking over from gasoline-powered vehicles, as per the report. The state's main source of revenue to fund about 80% of the roadwork, like highway maintenance, is funded via a 59-cent per gallon gas tax, which is the highest in the country, and is slipping away, as per the CBS8 News report. With the aim of addressing the funding gap, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has recently tried a pilot program to understand this potential new fee system, which could replace the current gas tax, as reported by CBS8 News. During the trial program, many approaches were tested, like a flat fee of 2.8 cents per mile and an individualised fee based on a vehicle's fuel economy, as reported by CBS8 News. Even different methods of reporting mileage to the state were also considered, such as odometer readings and special plug-in devices to measure miles travelled, according to the report. Chair of UCLA's Department of Urban Planning, Michael Manville, explained that, "The purchasing power of the fuel tax, which is the main way we finance transportation infrastructure has been steadily declining," as quoted in the report. Manville also pointed out that, "We have a lot more electric cars, we have a lot more hybrid cars, and just the typical new car gets better gas mileage," quoted CBS8 News. Californians Push Back However, the latest proposal faced disapproval from many Californians, like a San Diegan, Gail Hofilena expressed her opposition, by saying, "Not for it. I'm a hard 'no' on everything. I got to save my money where I can," as quoted in the report. While, assembly member Carl DeMaio, who previously had led the opposition to a local mileage fee, criticised the state-wide proposal, saying, "A mileage tax in California is a money grab, let's just be very clear," as quoted by the CBS8 News report. DeMaio estimated that the average Californian might have to pay $900 to $1200 per year under this new system and argued that it would disproportionately affect working and lower-income families with longer commutes, as reported by the CBS8 News report. He explained that, "A lot of working families, poorer, families, have a longer commute, so they will actually pay a higher mileage tax," adding, "It's very regressive. It's unfair," as quoted in the report. DeMaio also voiced out his scepticism regarding the state's claim that the road charge would replace the existing gas tax, as he said, "That's nonsense," adding, "These people would never give up a tax. They're just going to add an additional one," as quoted in the report. What's Next? However, it will be decided by the State Legislature whether the road charge would replace the fuel tax, reported CBS8 News. According to the report, Caltrans is expected to release the results of its recent pilot program later this year, which will likely inform the ongoing debate over this controversial proposal. FAQs How much tax could I be charged under this plan? Estimates suggest anywhere from $900 to $1,200 per year, depending on how much a person drives, as reported by CBS8 News. Why is California proposing a road charge now? Because the gas tax is no longer bringing in enough money, mainly due to more electric and fuel-efficient cars on the road, as per the CBS8 News report.
