Historic Trentham orangery added to heritage charity at risk register

Part of a historic estate has been added to a charity's register of buildings at orangery at Trentham in Staffordshire, part of the partially-demolished Trentham Hall, was added to SAVE Britain's Heritage's list in charity compiles a database of empty and threatened buildings in an effort to bring new life to them.A spokesperson for Trentham said there was ongoing work and investment across the estate to preserve and protect its wider heritage. "We appreciate the attention being brought to Trentham's historic orangery," they said."It's a reminder of how important these heritage sites are - and how much care they need to survive for future generations."They added: "Over the years, we've carefully restored and maintained many of the listed buildings and landscape features that help make Trentham such a special place."The orangery holds a special place in Trentham's history, and although it needs significant care, it remains firmly part of our long-term vision."They said they were committed to ensuring Trentham's heritage could continue to be enjoyed for years to come. "The dreamlike beauty of the remains of Trentham Hall standing in wonderfully landscaped grounds, are soured by the neglect which these important vestiges have suffered," a listing on SAVE's website added: "There are various elements of the once grand and enormous house which remain on the site but it is the orangery and entrance hall which, without an active use, have gradually deteriorated." The charity said the hall was remodelled by Sir Charles Barry in the 1800s and was one of the first in the county to adopt an Italianate added the grand entrance for carriages had also been added to the at risk parts of the building, which continued standing after much of the house was demolished in the early 1900s, are now part of Trentham's pleasure Franklin, conservation officer at SAVE, said there were more than 1,000 buildings on the register."We do have a number of buildings at risk of decay or dereliction, or even demolition, on our register – but when they are brought back into life they can become a huge boost to the local economy."She said they could support jobs, help its tourism provision or even make "characterful" were able to nominate buildings they were concerned about to the register, she added. Man who died in Upper Hutt fire named as John Louis

On Tuesday a neighbour told RNZ she'd lived next to Louis for 25 years. Photo: Supplied The man who died in a house fire in Upper Hutt has been named as 69-year-old John Louis. Emergency services were called to the blaze on Tararua Street in Trentham early Tuesday morning, and later confirmed that one person had died. Police said the cause of the fire was not believed to be suspicious. On Tuesday a neighbour told RNZ she'd lived next to Louis for 25 years. "He was an amazing horseman who bred and raced beautiful thoroughbred horses for man years," she said. "He had a very successful racing career." She said Louis had also worked with leather, making everything from shoes, bags and horse saddlery. "He was an interesting man to chat with as he had knowledge about so many things." She said he was also a kind and had always looked out for her. "I will always be grateful to have known him. It's a great loss." Person dies after Upper Hutt blaze

Police have confirmed an elderly person has died after a house fire in Upper Hutt, Wellington. A neighbour of house said the flames were huge and she feared the blaze would spread to her own home. Emergency services were called to a home on Tararua Street in Trentham, Upper Hutt just before 2.30am on Tuesday and found the home fully ablaze. Amala Joseph lives directly next door. Joseph told RNZ an elderly man lived in the property who she did not often see out. The house that caught fire overnight. Photo: RNZ / Mark Papalii "So scary, because we were really worried about the person because he is very old, he barely can walk." There were a lot of firefighters there and the fire was really large, Joseph said. She said she was nervous about her own home. "It's pretty close and we don't know what's going to happen next." Joseph said the situation was really sad. Photo: Supplied An RNZ reporter at the scene said it looked as if the windows had been blown out and pieces of burnt metal could be seen hanging off the side of the building. Neighbour Leon Zou told RNZ his family woke up in the middle of the night due to the fire. "The fire was pretty much higher than the house." Zou said he was shocked by the blaze. Another nearby neighbour Glynis said she was surprised to see the house this morning. "It is a very quiet street." She said she didn't know anything about the house and that she did not hear anything last night. A fire appliance outside the house that caught fire overnight. Photo: RNZ / Mark Papalii A fire truck and supporting fire crew as well as police officers remain at the scene. The road is shut off to through traffic near the house. About 20 firefighters and five trucks were tackling the blaze at its peak. A police spokesperson says it is not yet known what started the fire. A scene guard has been in place overnight. Fire and police investigators are carrying out a scene examination this morning.
