Tigers Place OF Kerry Carpenter on Injured List With Right Hamstring Strain
The Detroit Tigers placed outfielder Kerry Carpenter on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a right hamstring strain. The move was retroactive to Monday. The 27-year-old, who is hitting .257 with 16 home runs and 32 RBIs this season, was lifted in the fifth inning of Sunday's game against Minnesota for a pinch runner. Manager A.J. Hinch indicated Carpenter will not return before the All-Star break. 'It's mild. It's very similar to what he's been playing through, but this is the second time we've had this scare on the field where we're not sure if he can continue to go – the outfield play, the running,' Hinch said. 'So we have to err on the side of caution here and give him the break and see if we can knock this out over the course of these next few weeks.' Detroit recalled infielder Trey Sweeney from Triple-A Toledo to take Carpenter's roster spot before Wednesday's doubleheader against the Washington Nationals. Sweeney, who is hitting .221 with four home runs and 23 RBIs in 70 games, was sent to the minors Saturday. 'I joked with him that in 48 hours he fixed all the things we talked about that he had to work on in Triple-A,' Hinch said. 'But I'm glad he's back because as our roster fills up, the versatility still matters.' The Tigers also placed right-handed pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long on the 15-day injured list with neck stiffness and recalled righty Tyler Owens from Toledo. Detroit also summoned left-hander Bailey Horn from Toledo as its 27th man for the doubleheader. Detroit's staff could also soon get bolstered by the return of right-hander Reese Olson, who has been out with a finger injury since May 18. He is 4–3 with a 2.96 ERA in nine starts this season. 'His next outing is going to be in the big leagues,' Hinch said. 'It's unlikely to be here in Washington, but he's doing fine and just kind of waiting to be activated.'

Tigers OF Kerry Carpenter goes on IL with hamstring issue
DETROIT — Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter is going on the injured list, manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday on MLB Network Radio. The news comes after Carpenter left Sunday night's game against the Twins after aggravating a sore right hamstring. Carpenter had been playing through a hamstring issue for nearly a month. Advertisement In the aftermath of Sunday's game, Carpenter was hopeful he could avoid the IL. 'It feels similar to the last time I had a little issue with it,' he said. 'The staff here has done a great job of getting me back pretty quickly. We'll see how it goes, but I think we're all pretty optimistic about it.' The Tigers ultimately chose the more cautious route, placing Carpenter on the injured list and bringing back left-handed shortstop Trey Sweeney in his place. Carpenter's 16 home runs this season rank third on the Tigers, behind only Riley Greene (19) and Spencer Torkelson (17). Carpenter hit just .224 with 18 strikeouts and zero walks in June but had hit home runs in three of his past five games. The first-place Tigers might be able to weather Carpenter's absence thanks to the recent return of outfielder Matt Vierling, who could handle the majority of reps in right field along with Wenceel Pérez. The Tigers and their mix-and-match style should also have plenty of ways to configure their lineup without Carpenter, with likes of Colt Keith and Jahmai Jones able to fill in at DH.

Detroit Tigers option Trey Sweeney to Triple-A Toledo as Matt Vierling returns from injury
Shortstop Trey Sweeney was traded by the New York Yankees to the Los Angeles Dodgers in December 2023 and traded by the Dodgers to the Detroit Tigers in July 2024. He had big moments to help the Tigers advance to the postseason in October 2024, but it's been downhill since then. In June 2025, Sweeney has been optioned to Triple-A Toledo. Advertisement The Tigers optioned Sweeney on Saturday, June 28, before their game against the Minnesota Twins at Comerica Park. The departure of Sweeney created a spot on the 26-man roster for outfielder/third baseman Matt Vierling to return from the injured list. "He knows he has work to do and knows he has to play," manager A.J. Hinch said before Saturday's game. "I always say players know by how I use them — or don't. I don't want to say he expected it, because no player really knows what the plan is, but he knows what he can control: going down, playing hard, working on his game and being available at a moment's notice." NEW PITCHER: Who is Dietrich Enns? Central Michigan pitcher returns to MLB with Tigers after 1,371 days Detroit Tigers shortstop Trey Sweeney (27) fields a ball and throws to first base against the Kansas City Royals in the fifth inning at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, on Saturday, May 31, 2025. In 2025, Sweeney hit .221 with four home runs, 18 walks and 57 strikeouts across 70 games, posting a .594 OPS. He was worth minus-5 defensive runs saved in 517 innings at shortstop, including 57 starts. Advertisement The 25-year-old is a .220 hitter with a .611 OPS in his 106-game MLB career, spanning 344 plate appearances. Meanwhile, he has played just 107 games at the Triple-A level. He was the No. 20 overall pick in the 2021 draft. "Sometimes, these adjustments take a short time," Hinch said. "Sometimes, they take a long time. He's going to play today (for the Mud Hens), which should tell you how he took the news. He is ready to go play." From 2024 to 2025, Sweeney improved slightly in batting average (.218 to .221) and on-base percentage (.269 to .280), but he saw declines in slugging percentage (.373 to .314), isolated power (.155 to .093) and average exit velocity (from 91.3 mph to 88.1 mph). His ground-ball rate increased from 44.3% to 48%, while his fly-ball rate decreased from 29.1% to 24.7%. Advertisement Those were red flags on offense. "There a little subtle adjustments for him to control his posture at the plate," Hinch said. "He's an aggressive hitter who can time up anybody. He's got to get the ball in the air a little bit more. ... I think it's important for him to get his repetitions back to be able to get his swing to be maybe a tick less pull, a little more ability to adjust to the the game planning against him." REMEMBER WHEN: Trey Sweeney 'didn't imagine this' after trade: Tigers playoff shortstop His playing time dwindled as a result of his performance. Sweeney — the No. started 25 of the Tigers' 31 games in April and March, 25 of the 28 games in May and seven of the 24 games in June. Instead of Sweeney, the Tigers have leaned on Javier Báez as their starting shortstop and fellow left-handed hitter Zach McKinstry as their backup shortstop. Advertisement "Someone had to go with Matty coming back," Hinch said. "He was the odd man out. He will be back at some point. I don't know when, but it's an opportunity for him to go play a little bit more." Why Detroit Tigers' Matt Vierling expects to stay healthy in 2nd return from IL
Outfielder/third baseman Matt Vierling has returned to the Detroit Tigers after his second stint with a right shoulder injury, working as the center fielder Saturday, June 28, against the Minnesota Twins at Comerica Park. The 28-year-old played just four games between his first and second placements on the injured list. Advertisement This time, Vierling expects to stay healthy. "I feel way better," Vierling said before Saturday's game. "I felt pretty ready after that first IL stint, but I think now, my arm is in really good shape to withstand more of the toll that the season takes. I've made more high-intensity throws this past IL stint, so I've built myself up even more to handle the throws that it takes, plus the pain and soreness has been alleviated." ON THE OTHER END: Tigers option Trey Sweeney to Triple-A Toledo as Matt Vierling returns from injury Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling (8) drives in two runs during an at-bat in the first inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park in Detroit on Saturday, May 24, 2025. The Tigers expect the same — because it's what they're hearing from Vierling. To open a roster spot for Vierling, the Tigers optioned shortstop Trey Sweeney to Triple-A Toledo after he hit .221 in 70 games. Advertisement "He's more confident, which helps," manager A.J. Hinch said before Saturday's game. "The player is really the one that knows how he feels the best. We can measure a lot of different things, but the reality of it is the player is the one who knows he has to make the throws." Buy our book: The Epic History of the Tigers GOOD NEWS: Tigers' Matt Vierling gets 'best-case scenario' news about right shoulder injury The shoulder injury has been a problem for Vierling since the beginning of spring training, all the way back in mid-February. It's been something he has dealt with for more than 125 days. The first injury was diagnosed as a strained rotator cuff in his right shoulder, whereas the second injury was described as inflammation in his right shoulder. Advertisement "I was terrified that it was something worse," said Vierling, who hadn't played for the Tigers since May 26. "You start feeling it again — it wasn't necessarily the same as what I felt before because throwing was pretty much fine but moving it around just didn't feel great. I think that everybody was concerned." [ MUST LISTEN: Make "Days of Roar" your go-to Detroit Tigers podcast, available anywhere you listen to podcasts (Apple, Spotify) ] In 2025, Vierling has played a total of 22 games — 18 games on rehab assignments in the minor leagues and four games with the Tigers in the big leagues. He hit .182 (2-for-11) with zero walks and one strikeout in four games for the Tigers. He also hit .206 (13-for-63) with two home runs, 10 walks and 24 strikeouts in 18 games on rehab assignments, including 16 games for Triple-A Toledo. Advertisement For the Tigers, Vierling will play third base and all three outfield positions. "It strengthens our lineup some days, it strengthens our bench on other days, sometimes both," Hinch said. "We're going to continue to use our entire roster, not only the guys who are active, but also down to Triple-A. It will be a shared experience for everybody." Parker Meadows sits In Saturday's game, center fielder Parker Meadows opened the game on the bench as a product of Vierling's return from the injured list — and his struggles at the plate. The 25-year-old is hitting .181 with a .582 OPS in 21 games this season. Advertisement He is getting fooled by breaking balls. "We're really trying to make a determination on just how much of this is due to the fact that we're at the very beginning of the season," Hinch said, referencing Meadows' upper arm nerve injury that sidelined him for three months. "What is the cue to get him to click and be not only on time for the fastball, but adjust to the secondary pitches? ... We've see when he gets his timing, watch out, because he can be an offensive threat anywhere I hit him." Contact Evan Petzold at epetzold@ or follow him @EvanPetzold.
