The two find themselves going to extremes in a race against the clock to avoid eviction and keep their friendship intact. The pic notched 94% with critics and 90% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie before P&A cost a reported $14M. The movie's creative team is also expected to return, Deadline can confirm. Lawrence Lamont directed the original off a screenplay by Syreeta Singleton. Sony has a reputation for keeping its production costs low and profit margins high, particularly on titles that are counterprogramming and stoking underserved demographics, i.e., female moviegoers. It Ends With Us, which Sony co-financed for $25M, mushroomed to a net $207M after all ancillaries in its first cycle off a global box office take near $350M. Another cash cow for Sony was the Sydney Sweeney-Glen Powell romantic comedy Anyone But You, which netted $103M off a budget of $25M before P&A after racking up $219M worldwide. Sony currently has Karate Kid: Legends in theaters; it opened to $20.3M domestically this past weekend, and close to $50M worldwide off a $45M production cost. The movie teams Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan from the previous Karate Kid movies. Variety first had the news on the One of Them Days sequel. Mattel, TriStar to Develop Film Based on Whac-a-Mole

With films based on 'Masters of the Universe' and Matchbox toy cars already in development, Mattel Films is adding a live-action/animated hybrid movie based on the classic game Whac-a-Mole to their production slate with TriStar as its partner. 'Whac-A-Mole is more than a game — it's a laugh-out-loud battle of reflexes that has brought joy and a little chaos to families for five decades. We're beyond excited to team up with TriStar Pictures to turn the iconic experience into a wild, action-packed ride for the big screen,' Mattel Films president Robbie Brenner said. Whac-a-Mole was first created as an arcade game by the Japanese company TOGO in 1975, challenging players to hit toy moles that popped out of a series of holes with a soft mallet before they fell back down. The game became a cultural touchstone, often used to refer to futile tasks. Mattel acquired the trademark to the game in 2008 and has released a home version with moles that light up instead of popping out of holes. The film will be overseen by Elizabeth Bassin and Steve Spohr for Mattel Films, and by Shary Shirazi and Kelseigh Coombs for TriStar Pictures. 'Mattel continues to create impact with their films, and Whac-A-Mole is no exception – a brand that has been in culture for generations,' added TriStar president Nicole Brown. 'We look forward to partnering with them to bring audiences a fresh, unexpected take on this absolute classic.' Since scoring the highest grossing film of 2023 with Warner Bros. and Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie,' Mattel has begun searching through its catalog of toys and games for more potential film adaptations. 'Masters of the Universe,' which is currently shooting in the U.K., will be based on the classic 80s toy line and animated series 'He-Man and the Masters of the Universe,' with Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man and Alison Brie, Camila Mendes, Jared Leto and Idris Elba rounding out the cast. 'Bumblebee' and 'Kubo and the Two Strings' filmmaker Travis Knight is directing, with a release set by Amazon MGM for June 5, 2026. The studio is also producing a movie based on the classic Matchbox die-cast toy car series starring John Cena and Jessica Biel. Skydance and Apple are co-producing the film for a release in fall 2026. The post Mattel, TriStar to Develop Film Based on Whac-a-Mole appeared first on TheWrap.

Scarlett Johansson CRIED After Reading This Script: 'It Almost Never Happens'

Last Updated: Scarlett Johansson is stepping behind the camera as she takes on the role of director for the upcoming drama. Scarlett Johansson was moved to tears by the script for 'Eleanor The Great'. The 40-year-old actress is stepping behind the camera as she takes on the role of director for the upcoming drama – which follows a year-old Floridian woman (June Squibb ) as she forms an unlikely friendship with a 19-year-old student (Erin Kellyman) in New York City – and could see a 'great possibility" in the emotional screenplay that reminded her of films made in decades gone by. She told Deadline: 'When I read it, I cried, and that almost never happens. 'Sometimes you'll read a script that's really moving. When I read 'Jojo Rabbit', I cried. Sometimes a script will move you like that, which is extraordinary. 'I could see there was a great possibility in it," she continues. 'I thought, 'Oh, actually, I think I could tell this story.' It reminded me so much of independent film from the mid to late '90s. I was a kid of the '90s. I was working in independent film at that time, and I watched a lot of movies in that period of time that were throughout the '90s into the early aughts, like 'Crossing Delancey' and movies like that I loved as a kid. Richard LaGravenese made a great movie called Living Out Loud, and then certain Woody Allen movies from that period of time, too, that are films that I gravitate toward as just a fan." The 'Black Widow' star then recalled that she had been put on such a tight schedule to get the film made but felt 'so lucky" when two major production compies got involved. She said: 'I got the script in August, and I was like, 'We have to make it this winter.' That was very stressful, like crazy, crazy stressful. It fell apart a thousand different times. 'I don't want to say I'm a film snob, but I love Sony Pictures Classics. The idea of working with TriStar was amazing, it was perfect." 'I couldn't have asked for better partners than Sony Pictures Classics and TriStar. Nicole Brown, our executive at TriStar, is incredible, a dream executive. I was lucky." First Published:
