Kolkata gang-rape: BJP fact-finding team recommends central agency probe

A BJP fact-finding team has recommended a probe by a central agency into the gang rape of a law student in Kolkata, claiming the state police's way of handling the case raises suspicion of attempts being made to save the culprits. Panel member Satya Pal Singh alleged that the handwritten complaint submitted by the victim had been tampered with to remove accused's names.(ANI) Alleging a deteriorating law-and-order situation in the Trinamool Congress-ruled West Bengal, it has also recommended that a request be made to the Centre for some "effective measures" to control the situation in the state, said former Union minister and ex-Mumbai police chief Satya Pal Singh. He made the remark at a press conference on Tuesday as part of the fact-finding team. The four-member team comprising BJP MP and former Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra, and former Union minister Meenakshi Lekhi, besides Satya Pal Singh, submitted its report to party president J P Nadda here on Tuesday. Sharing with the media the findings of the BJP panel, Singh said there were questions on the registration of the case and its investigation by the Kolkata Police. He alleged that the handwritten complaint submitted by the victim had been tampered with to remove the names of the accused she had mentioned. "Police erased the names of the accused that the victim had given in her handwritten complaint and put in letters J, G, S, M in place of those names. When the police have tampered with the complaint itself, which is the basic document in the case, how can one hope that the victim and her family will get justice?" He said the committee has recommended that either a probe by a central agency be initiated or a high-level independent inquiry by persons of repute be instituted to ensure justice to the victim and her family. Mishra claimed the Kolkata Police Commissioner (Manoj Jha) was evasive in his reply when the enquiry committee asked him to clarify why names were erased and some letters were put in their place. The Kolkata Police's actions, like "tampering with the FIR and swift arrest of four accused", raise a big suspicion, he said. Singh said the BJP committee noted growing atrocities and crimes against women in West Bengal and police inaction in many such cases. "There is a total collapse of law and order in West Bengal," he said. Slamming the ruling Trinamool Congress over the law student's gang-rape, Deb demanded that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee take responsibility for the incident. "She has no right to continue in her post," he said.

Kolkata Law College gang rape: NCW member Archana Majumdar visits crime scene

National Commission for Women (NCW) member Archana Majumdar on Sunday (June 29, 2025) visited the South Kolkata Law College, where a student was allegedly gang-raped by three persons, including an alumnus. She claimed that the police could not provide her with the details of the whereabouts of the survivor. "The commission stands beside her," she said, maintaining that the NCW's mandate is to assist a survivor as long as she wants. Majumdar said that it is necessary to speak to her parents as well. "It's a part of the investigation (by the NCW)," she said. She said that the NCW, in such cases, speaks to the survivor as well as the parents and tries to find out what they require, including security, assistance in carrying forward her education, etc. During her visit to the law college, Majumdar was seen having a verbal exchange with the police officers present. An assistant commissioner of police (ACP) present at the college said that apart from the NCW member, two others accompanying her were allowed to enter the campus after noting down their mobile numbers. "No videography or still photography will be allowed inside," he said. She later entered the campus and visited the guard room, where the alleged incident took place on June 25. "I will report that I could not complete my job," Ms. Majumdar said. Following the survivor's complaint, the police have arrested the prime accused, an alumnus, along with two students. A guard of the college was also apprehended on Saturday morning, according to the police. The police formed a five-member special investigation team (SIT), led by an assistant commissioner rank officer, to probe the case. Opposition political parties, including the BJP and the Left, have been holding protests over the alleged gang rape, claiming lawlessness in the Trinamool Congress-ruled West Bengal and lack of safety in educational institutions.

Bypoll in Bengal's Kaliganj seat acid test for CM Mamata Banerjee amid multiple controversies

Kolkata: Kaliganj Assembly constituency in Nadia district of West Bengal is among the five Assembly constituencies that are scheduled to go for bypolls on June 19. The counting will be on June 23. The other four constituencies that will go to the polls are Kadi and Visavdar in Gujarat, Ludhiana-West in Punjab, and Nilambur in Kerala. The last date for making nominations is June 2, and the date for the scrutiny of nominations is June 3. The last date for the withdrawal of candidatures is June 5. Bypolls for the Kaliganj Assembly constituency were necessitated following the sudden demise of its erstwhile Trinamool Congress legislator Nasiruddin Ahmed in February this year at the age of 70. Since then, the chair of the legislator has been lying vacant. Ahmed got elected for the first time from Kaliganj in the 2011 West Bengal elections, which marked the end of the 34-year Left Front rule in West Bengal and the beginning of the Mamata Banerjee-led and Trinamool Congress-ruled regime. However, he was defeated by Congress' Hasanazzamn Sheikh in the 2016 elections. After being out of the corridors of power for five years, Ahmed again got elected in the 2021 Assembly polls. Before 2011 and since 1977, which marked the beginning of the 34-year-old Left Front regime, Kaliganj had witnessed frequent changes in voting results with the contests being concentrated between Left Front ally Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP and the Indian National Congress. In the 2021 Assembly elections, Ahmed got elected from Kaliganj by defeating the BJP's Abhijit Ghosh by a margin of 46,987 votes. Congress' Abdul Kasem came in the third position, securing just 25,076 votes. The bypoll is perceived to be an acid test for the ruling Trinamool Congress and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee amid multiple controversies, including the loss of jobs of 25,753 teaching and non-teaching jobs in state-run schools in the state and pending payment of dearness allowance dues to the state government employees and others. At the same time, the bypoll is also a challenge for the opposition BJP, and it is to be seen whether they can transfer the growing grievances of people on these issues in their favour. Earlier this month, on May 9, the final electoral list for Kaliganj was published. The final list featured a decrease of over 2,000 voters from the number in the 2021 Assembly polls. The final list was announced following a special summary revision by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), West Bengal. As per the final electoral list, the total number of voters in Kaliganj stands at 2,52,670.
