Experts: 4 out of 10 Indians hit by fatty liver, teetotallers also at risk
Bhubaneswar: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), or fatty liver disease, is fast emerging as a major global health challenge, experts said at the Metabolic Horizon-2025 conference organised here on Saturday. They pointed out that four out of ten people in India are now affected by this condition. Many people still believe that only those who consume alcohol are at risk of developing fatty liver disease. However, experts warned that even teetotallers can suffer from fatty liver disease. "Fat gets deposited in the liver due to certain metabolic conditions, including diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, negligible physical activity, and some diseases and drugs. Previously, when we found fat in the liver, we did not worry much. But once we discovered that MASLD is a common cause of cirrhosis, we began taking it seriously," said Dr Abhay Sahoo, an endocrinologist. Sahoo stated that initially, fat accumulates slowly in the liver, a condition known as hepatic steatosis. "After about five years, inflammation begins, and the liver becomes swollen. In the next stage, it progresses to fibrosis, which can eventually lead to cirrhosis. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Upto 15% Discount for Salaried Individuals ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo We can reverse fatty liver in its early stage, but once fibrosis sets in, there is little chance of reversing the damage," he added. Sahoo said that people with fatty liver disease are usually asymptomatic. "They often do not experience any symptoms until the condition becomes severe. Some people may feel pain or discomfort on the right side of the abdomen. We often detect MASLD incidentally during an ultrasound or other tests," he said. Dr Satyajit Tripathy, a diabetologist, added that liver function tests (LFT), ultrasound scans, and even a fibroscan can help detect MASLD and assess liver elasticity. "This advanced test can detect fibrosis in the liver. A liver biopsy is another method to diagnose the disease," Tripathy said. He added that untreated MASLD can lead to more serious complications. "Exercises such as walking and yoga, along with dietary control and lifestyle changes, can help reverse this metabolic disorder if caught early. We need to maintain a healthy work-life balance and reduce fat accumulation, especially around the belly. A balanced diet is key to reducing liver fat. Even regular walking combined with a good diet can lower the risk of MASLD. Following a proper circadian rhythm is also important for a healthy lifestyle," said Tripathy.

West Bengal MP Mahua Moitra acting as BJD's mouthpiece, says BJP MLA Tankadhar Tripathy
BHUBANESWAR/JHARSUGUDA: The detention of 444 suspected Bangladeshi immigrants in Jharsuguda district has sparked a political face-off with BJP's local MLA Tankadhar Tripathy strongly defending the government's action and slamming TMC MP Mahua Moitra for her sharp criticism of the move. Addressing mediapersons in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday, Tripathy said, 'India belongs to Indians only. Neither India nor Odisha is a Dharamshala where anyone can come, stay unlawfully, and carry out anti-social or criminal activities.' Taking a swipe at Moitra's social media post, he said it seems the BJD is voicing its concerns through their new daughter-in-law. 'Several illegal activities took place during the BJD's rule. What should have been done earlier, as per Union Home Ministry guidelines, is now being implemented by our government.' Tripathy said the suspected immigrants are being held at designated detention centres not police stations, and those with valid citizenship documents are being released. 'Only those who fail to provide legal proof will face legal action and deportation. The government cannot allow anti-social elements to live illegally and commit crimes. Those raising objections should first clarify whether they stand for Indian nationality or sheltering illegal immigrants,' he asserted.

Cops acting according to the law: Jharsuguda MLA
Bhubaneswar: BJP's Jharsuguda MLA Tankadhar Tripathy on Wednesday said police were acting as per the law in response to Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra's allegation that people from her constituency are being illegally detained in Jharsuguda. Speaking to media persons, Tripathy said Odisha and India are not free shelters for infiltrators and that India belongs to Indians. "The MP must understand that police are taking steps as per law for country's safety and security. However, bona fide citizens of the country have nothing to fear," he said, adding action will be taken against the illegal settlers. Responding to Mahua's statement that such things never happened during 24 years of the Naveen Patnaik govt in Odisha, Tripathy said BJD should clarify on her statement since she had mentioned about the regional party. "It seems BJD is using Mahua to speak on issues on which it can't. Probably, the regional party is using its new daughter-in-law to speak on issues on which it can't speak," he said indirectly referring to her recent marriage with former BJD MP Pinaki Misra. "BJD should clarify whether it stands for or against the Bangladeshis staying illegally in the country," the BJP MLA said. In response to Tripathy's statement, BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty said after a senior IPS officer clarified regarding Mahua's statement, there was no reason for anyone to continue discussing the issue. "Let the police do its work. I don't find any reason to even respond to what the MLA said with a cheap political motive," he added.
