Rangers ‘miss out on key transfer target as star completes medical and finalises deal at other club'
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RANGERS have already signed seven new players this summer, with Russell Martin wasting no time in the transfer market ahead of the blockbuster Champions League clashes with Panathinaikos. But many other players have been linked with the Ibrox club since the window opened and manager Martin arrived in Glasgow last month. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 1 It could be a big blow for Russell Martin Credit: PA And it looks like Rangers have lost out in the race to sign one of their targets as a report suggests he's finalising a move elsewhere in Europe. The Light Blues were keen on signing Brazilian midfielder Metinho from French side Troyes in a deal worth around £4million. The 22-year-old Samba star - who has been likened to Paul Pogba - was one of the many midfielders on the radar of the Govan club. But he'll no longer be on the Gers' shortlist as he has returned to Switzerland instead, according to a report. Metinho is contracted with Troyes but spent the second half of last season on loan at Basel in the Swiss Super League alongside the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri and former Celtic striker Albian Ajeti. He made 14 appearances in all competitions and impressed new manager Ludovic Magnin with his displays. According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Metinho has now chosen to continue his career with the historic Swiss club on a permanent deal. Last night he revealed the midfielder had jetted into Switzerland to complete and medical and finalise terms. It's a blow for Gers boss Martin who could still be looking to add to his midfield ranks despite already snapping up Thelo Aasgaard and Joe Rothwell, with Lyall Cameron also joining. He may have to begin his hunt for a replacement for Nico Raskin as reports from Spain suggest he's a target for Real Betis. Rangers boss Russell Martin opens up on transfer plans as he delivers updates on Dessers and Igamane The Belgian has two years left on his current deal but the Ibrox club are preparing a bumper new contract offer to convince him to stay beyond this summer. SunSport understands that Gers boss Martin wants to build his team around the 24-year-old. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Swedish winger Amar Fatah joins Dundee United on loan from Troyes
Dundee United have completed the signing of winger Amar Fatah from French Ligue 2 club Troyes on a season-long loan. Fatah has spent the last two seasons on loan at Belgian outfit Lommel and Dutch side Willem II respectively, and earned his first call-up to the Sweden Under-21 squad last year. The 21-year-old becomes the eighth signing of the summer so far for United, who are looking to improve on last season's fourth-place finish. Boss Jim Goodwin told the Tangerines' website: 'The signing of Amar represents a real coup for the club – he's a player who arrives with tremendous pedigree despite his youth. 'A player who thrives in one-versus-one scenarios, we feel Amar will excite our supporters with his pace, creativity and quality in the final third. 'We also believe we have cultivated the perfect environment and culture for him to develop even further, and we're eager to help him take the next step in his journey whilst simultaneously strengthening Dundee United.' Bryan Mbeumo deal broke down as Brentford chief opened up on Man Utd target
As Manchester United continue their pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo, here's the story of how Brentford got a transfer for the Cameroon international over the line in 2019 It's not easy getting a deal for Bryan Mbeumo over the line - just ask Brentford technical director Lee Dykes. The Cameroon star remains at the top of Manchester United's wish-list as Ruben Amorim strives to pep up his forward line following a dire season at Old Trafford. United have seen several bids, including a £60million offer, rejected but remain hopeful of getting their man, having already snared Matheus Cunha from Wolves. Brentford signed Mbeumo from French side Troyes in 2019, although their pursuit of the striker was far from straightforward. It was a big moment for Dykes, who had recently joined from EFL side Bury. 'I felt big pressure because I walked into a function where I was trying to take forward some of the good work that had already been done,' he told the Bees' website in December 2023. 'Coming into Brentford, I'd never really spent a lot of money. I'd always worked at League One and League Two level. 'The most I'd spent was £50,000 on a player, and then six weeks later we are paying €5million for Bryan Mbeumo. So obviously you start to think, 'Wow, this is big money.' But, at the end of the day, it's just different money, same process.' Dykes, co-director of football Rasmus Ankersen and head coach Thomas Frank made a whistlestop trip to France in an effort to complete a deal Mbeumo, only for those initial talks to come to nothing. 'We were figuring that there was a possibility to sign Bryan,' said Dykes. 'We had cleverly sourced that information, having been told that he wouldn't entertain the Championship. 'It became quickly apparent that we had to get in and out of France in a day as Thomas (Frank) had his training commitments because it was near to the season starting. 'Where the meeting was going to take place, there was no airport close enough we could find from London or a route to do in one day, so we didn't know if we could make it work. 'I remember Rasmus just calling me up saying, 'I spoke to Matthew (Benham, club owner) and he said he'll fire up a jet and we'll get over there' - at that point, I was just thinking, 'Wow!' 'But that's when I started to feel the pressure. I'd lined it all up with Troyes, as well as the agents that were involved, so me, Thomas and Rasmus got on this jet. 'We got there, it was one of the hottest days of the year, it had reached about 43°C when we landed. It was a 60-minute journey and the air conditioning wasn't working in the taxi we got in! 'We had the meeting, spoke with the player, the club and the agent, but the deal broke down. So, I had convinced everyone to fly over to France to get this deal done - I thought it was going to get done - but it had broken down.' A bad day then got even worse for Dykes before a deal for Mbeumo was eventually revived. He added: 'On the way back, and I'm not a good flier in general, the pilot turned to us and said, 'It's chaotic weather in London, it's snowing, there's thunder, there's lightning.' I was thinking, 'What? It was 43 degrees when we left France.' 'And the journey back was horrendous - I could see the pilot avoiding the dark spots on the radar. I was bricking it! 'But, fortunately, we landed safely and, more importantly, managed to turn around the deal a few days later and eventually sign him. So, Brentford fans must know that I risked my life to sign Bryan Mbeumo!' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Eiffel Tower summit closed and parks open overnight as heatwave persists in France
The summit of Paris' Eiffel Tower has been closed to visitors due to the brutal heatwave sweeping across France and the rest of Europe. 'Due to the heatwave, and to ensure everyone's comfort and safety, the summit will be closed through July 2,' read a statement published on their social media account. 'To all my visitors, please protect yourself from the sun and stay hydrated.' Visitors are being advised to postpone their visit until Thursday (3 July). Authorities in the French capital also announced that it would keep its parks open overnight on Tuesday for people to cool off amidst the punishing heat. National weather agency Meteo-France issued a red alert for 16 departments, including Paris and all the departments of the Ile-de-France region, for Tuesday 1 July and Wednesday 2 July, with temperatures expected to soar to 40C in Paris today. The number of schools shut across the country has surged to nearly 1,900, up from just 200 on Monday, in a dramatic response to the intensifying heatwave. In Paris, parents were advised to keep children home on Tuesday and Wednesday, while towns such as Troyes and Melun closed all their schools. In Marseille, public pools offered free entry for the duration of the heatwave, according to AFP. And in Orleans, authorities offered free access to air-conditioned museums in an effort to help locals cool off. The continent continues to grapple with an 'extreme heatwave', with two deaths linked to extreme heat in Italy so far. Dozens of heat warnings are in place across France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and well as the Balkans. 'Extreme heat is no longer a rare event – it has become the new normal,' UN secretary general Antonio Guterres warned. 'The planet is getting hotter and more dangerous – no country is immune.'
