Trupti canteens will help women financially, says MAUD Principal Secretary

The State government is trying to improve the economic conditions of poor women and lead them on a path of self-reliance, said Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar on Saturday (July 26). Inaugurating the city's first Trupti canteen at Panja Centre in Vijayawada on Saturday, Mr. Suresh Kumar said the government has come up with the idea of Trupti canteens to encourage women part of the Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas(DWCRA) to become entrepreneurs. Mr. Suresh Kumar said the government plans to set up 750 canteens, under the auspices of Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA), across the State. The first in the State, which came up in Nellore, is running successfully, he said, adding that women are getting an income of ₹10,000-15,000 a day. He said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has given them a target of training 30,000 women as entrepreneurs, and it is as part of the target that they have asked women to manage the canteens. Mr. Suresh Kumar said the main purpose of these canteens is to provide food at low prices and also to provide employment to women. There are 28 lakh DWCRA women's groups in the State, and such initiatives will help them financially, the officer said. Every canteen will be managed by four women, and they would be provided training. Such canteens will be set up at important junctions and places along highways, Mr. Suresh Kumar said. MEPMA project director N. Tej Bharat said the canteens were launched in line with the Chief Minister's action plan to have one entrepreneur in every family. He added that they are working towards training 30,000 women as entrepreneurs. Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dhyanachandra H.M. said there are 11 Anna canteens at present. In addition to the Trupti canteen at Panja Centre, two more canteens are coming up, he added.

A woman in love, a father ‘humiliated': How a marriage ended in tragedy at a haldi ceremony

'Don't tell him that Trupti is no more,' Priyanka Wagh whispers as her son, Avinash Wagh, 22, slips in and out of sleep in a ward in Pune's Sassoon Hospital. Avinash, who has undergone surgeries to remove bullets from his shoulder and stomach, has been told that his wife, Trupti Wagh, 21, is at her mother's house in Maharashtra's Dhule district and will be visiting him soon. On April 26, as the Wagh family danced to Khandeshi songs at the haldi ceremony of Avinash's sister Sanskruti in Jalgaon's Chopda, nearly 450 km from Pune, Trupti's father Kiran Mangle, 48, entered the venue with a gun. 'He fired two bullets in the air and, then, shot Trupti in the chest. When Avinash ran to protect her, he was shot too. Trupti collapsed and died on the spot,' says Priyanka. Trupti, who was four months pregnant at the time of her death, was cremated the next day, on April 27. With her mother reportedly having 'disowned' her, Trupti's mother-in-law conducted the cremation rituals. Priyanka now spends her days at her son's bedside. Minutes after the shooting, the police had reached the site, a mandap erected in an open area in a lane. They had rescued Kiran, a retired police sub-inspector with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) who was being beaten by the crowd, and taken him to a hospital. 'Trupti's father is undergoing treatment in Jalgaon. We will charge him with her murder and the attempted murder of Avinash. A search is underway for Kiran's son, Nikhil Mangle, who was present at the scene,' says Investigation Officer (IO) Jitendra Valte of Chopda Police Station. This case was not triggered by caste or religious differences, since both families belong to the same Scheduled Caste, but allegedly over economic divide and education. While the Mangle family owns property and land, Priyanka, who works as a nurse at a Pune hospital, raised her children single-handedly after her husband's death 16 years ago. Avinash started working after Class 12 to help his mother financially. He currently works as a cleaner in the offices of a Pune-based multinational company. In contrast, Kiran had admitted Trupti to Dr D Y Patil Homoeopathic Medical College & Research Centre in Pune so she could become a doctor. (Express photo by Arul Horizon) 'My sister-in-law (husband's eldest sister) lives near Shirpur (around 100 km from Jalgaon). I had left Avinash with her when he was very young for his education. She was a widow and looked after him well. Trupti was my sister-in-law's granddaughter. That's where the love story started,' says Priyanka, adding that Trupti would come over to her Ajji's (grandmother's) house during holidays and the two children would play together. She adds, 'They used to fight all the time. He would pacify her and she would calm down. She would tell him what to do, which child to speak to at parties and where not to sit.' It was Priyanka who had alerted Trupti's parents about their children's relationship. She says she had even explained to Trupti that she came from a well-to-do home and should end her relationship with her son. 'But Trupti was adamant. She said, 'I have dated your son and, now, you are asking me to leave him. If I marry, it will be with him. Main maroongi toh parvah nahin, lekin shaadi main iske saath karoongi (I don't care if I die, but I will only marry Avinash)',' says Priyanka, adding that Trupti was the stronger voice and headstrong. 'She did not seem to be afraid of anything. My son was poor, so he was quiet. He would barely argue. It was Trupti who made plans, saying aisa karenge, waisa karenge (we will do this, we will do that),' says Priyanka. On March 18, 2024, the couple eloped and got married. The stressed relationship between the two families nosedived. The couple had moved in next to Priyanka's home in Pune's Kothrud for the last one year. Meanwhile, Kiran had his own plans for his daughter. Recounting his conversation with Trupti's father, who has stitches on the face and head from the beating he got after the shooting, IO Valte tells The Indian Express. 'He has told us that he had many dreams for Trupti. He was going to retire in 2017, but took an extension so that his daughter could complete her studies. He spent several lakhs to get her admitted to D Y Patil in Pune and even took loans. Kiran told us that he regretted what he had done, but also felt a sense of sukoon (peace).' While Trupti was shot dead by her father at the venue, her husband Avinash sustained bullet injuries. (Photo: Special Arrangement) Stating that tradition in the region was to get girls married early, though some families did focus on daughters' education, Valte adds, 'Kiran says he had sacrificed everything for his daughter and felt humiliated by her choice (of spouse). He felt a sense of betrayal and social shame, which turned into rage, causing him to plan his revenge.' Meanwhile, Trupti and Avinash were blissfully happy, especially since she was pregnant. 'Last year, Trupti's mother and several relatives came to Pune, and took her with them (to Dhule district). She told me that they beat her up and forced her to undergo an abortion. Her family did not want the child. She returned home after the abortion (in November 2024). She would cry endlessly for their baby,' adds Priyanka. Then, Sanskruti's wedding gave them all a reason to celebrate. The family made elaborate plans — Trupti and Priyanka bought Paithani sarees, while Avinash got a suit for the haldi and kurta-pyjama for the wedding. In the corridor of Sassoon Hospital, Priyanka holds out her palms. 'Trupti had applied mehendi on my right hand. My daughter made the design on the left one,' she says. On April 24, the family held a mehendi ceremony in Pune with lots of food and a DJ playing music in a mandap. The next day, they left for Chopda. The day after, which would end in tragedy, 'everybody woke up happy'. Priyanka recalls, 'From morning itself, Trupti was scolding me for talking too much. She told me, 'Keep quiet, Mummy, and sit'.' Waiting for Avinash to be discharged from hospital, Priyanka breaks down frequently. 'I will start an andolan (protest). I will do whatever it takes to ensure justice for Trupti. Every person responsible for the attack, including provoking it, will have to answer (for their actions). My struggle will spread awareness that everybody should respect love. If we don't allow love, how will we live?' she says. Also unaware of Trupti's death is one more member of the family — a one-year-old Rottweiler pup that Priyanka had gifted Trupti on her birthday in January last year. Trupti had named him 'Harry Potter', ironically, after the boy who lived.
