Puad denies Umno-PN backdoor talks
Puad Zarkashi said he would have been the first to object to a proposal for Umno to forge a new government with PN. PETALING JAYA : Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi has rubbished claims that party representatives have been meeting with Perikatan Nasional leaders for talks on forming a new government. He claimed that it was PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man who initiated contact with Umno intermediaries and allegedly offered the party the prime minister's post if it agreed to a plan for a backdoor government. 'But that idea was never brought to or discussed in the Supreme Council. Even if it had been, I would have been the first to speak up and strongly oppose it,' he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian. His remarks were in response to Tuan Ibrahim's statement that Umno leaders had held discreet meetings with PN leaders to explore 'cross-party movement' led by PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin. Speaking to the media at the Selangor PAS Youth muktamar yesterday, Tuan Ibrahim also reportedly invited dissatisfied Umno members to join PN, likening it to 'leaving a sinking ship'. Puad dismissed the overture and said Umno would not repeat what he described as a mistake of the past. 'Tuan Ibrahim knows full well that Umno will not fall into the same trap again. All of this is just an attempt to lure us in,' he said. 'The idea of Umno working with PAS, let alone Bersatu, is nothing but a dream.' The last time Umno, Bersatu and PAS cooperated was when they formed the government in March 2020 following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan administration.

Kelantan cleric entitled to his opinion, says Tuan Ibrahim
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man at a press conference after officiating the Selangor PAS Youth general assembly in Klang today. KLANG : PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has downplayed a prominent religious scholar's call for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's administration to remain until the end of its term, describing it as a personal opinion. Tuan Ibrahim said Sheikh Wazir Che Awang Al-Makki Hafizahullah, who is the deputy chairman of Jabhah Pondok Kelantan, was entitled to express his views like anyone else. 'That is his personal opinion. I believe if there's a new prime minister, it might improve the economy. 'We have our own experts who can offer better perspectives,' he told a press conference after officiating the Selangor PAS Youth general assembly at Dewan Mawar Biru Duo in Kapar here today. Earlier, it was reported that Sheikh Wazir had expressed hope the unity government under Anwar would remain until the end of its term. He said a frequent change of government was 'not in line with Islamic values' and could negatively affect the advancement of Islam and the economy. He was believed to be responding to ongoing efforts by certain quarters, particularly the opposition, to topple the government with a major protest rally planned next week. Yesterday, Anwar challenged his critics to table a vote of no-confidence in the Dewan Rakyat if they wished to take over Putrajaya. He called on those who wanted to topple the government to follow the proper process. If they did not have the support in the Dewan Rakyat, he said they must wait for the next general election instead of resorting to street demonstrations or inciting the public. Perikatan Nasional has planned a 'Turun Anwar' mass rally for July 26 in Kuala Lumpur to push for Anwar's resignation. The organisers expect up to 300,000 participants although a similar protest in Shah Alam earlier this month drew just over 300.

PAS snubbing Muhyiddin meeting? Tuan Ibrahim says Abdul Hadi merely fully booked
KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 — PAS has reportedly played down the absence of president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang from a recent meeting chaired by Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin involving other Opposition parties. Malaysiakini quoted Abdul Hadi's deputy Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man saying the Marang MP had prior commitments and was unable to attend the meeting. 'Coincidentally, the president had to attend a programme which he was invited to much earlier,' he reportedly said. Tuan Ibrahim added that proposals discussed at the meeting would be brought up at the PN supreme council meeting for further deliberation. The reason why Abdul Hadi did not send a representative to the meeting remains unclear. Yesterday, PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden reportedly said he was not informed of the meting. He was quoted suggesting that the party's top leadership may have known about the meeting and expressed support for such engagements to unite the opposition. Despite that, Afnan said the meeting could have carried more weight if PAS leadership had been present and the Islamist party would likely have joined the meeting if they had been invited. Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president Muhyiddin had on Friday said he held a meeting with leaders of several opposition parties to discuss forming a coalition focused on national interests. Muhyiddin said the proposed coalition aims to provide a united opposition front and reinforce the check and balance function in and out of Parliament. PN component parties Gerakan and Malaysian Indian People's Party were present — but not PAS. Other parties represented included Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM), Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda), Parti Pejuang Tanahair, Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra), People's Progressive Party, Berjasa, United for the Rights of Malaysians Party (Urimai), and Malaysian Advancement Party.

PAS claims Pahang is set to vote for PN in the next GE
PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man claims public support in Pahang for PAS and Perikatan Nasional (PN) has significantly increased, indicating voters are ready to choose PN as the state government in the upcoming 16th General Election (GE16). 'This development is not only evident from the encouraging attendance at various grassroots programmes, but it is also supported by independent studies and on-the-ground observations. 'Moreover, we can see that the people are increasingly rejecting any explanations or statements by the government on various issues,' he said in a statement. The Cheka assemblyman Tuan Ibrahim also claims young voters, civil servants, and rural communities are increasingly rejecting the UMNO-Pakatan Harapan state government, forcing it to work harder to prove its competence. Backing the claims by the PAS leader, Pahang PAS information chief Ustaz Aireroshairi Roslan, stressed that UMNO must mentally prepare to become the opposition after the GE16, following the increasing public support for PAS from GE13 to GE15. He also said the 'PAS Leads Pahang' slogan taunted as mere rhetoric by UMNO shows that the ruling party is still in denial and refuses to accept the reality of the changing political landscape in the state. 'The strong public response to this tagline proves that the people are ready for a leadership change that is cleaner and more trustworthy,' he said in a statement, adding that UMNO is riddled with internal crises and leadership turmoil while PAS has strengthened party machinery. On the other hand, he also said the cooperation between DAP and Umno is now a heavy liability for the Malay party. 'How can UMNO claim to fight for the Malay agenda when they are willing to collaborate with a party that has always opposed the special position of the Malays?' he questioned. — July 19, 2025 Main photo credit: Bernama

Rafizi pans PAS' conditional support of RCI call
Former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli said even if PAS's views seemed similar to his, it did not mean they stood together politically. PETALING JAYA : Former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli has criticised PAS for its conditional support of his call for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) into judicial appointments. In a Facebook post, he accused the party of attempting to ride on the issue. 'PAS always talks about mature politics. Mature politics means objectively expressing our views on issues of public interest. 'If our views seem similar, it does not mean we stand together on the stage of party politics,' he said. Yesterday, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the party would only support Rafizi's call if he participated in their street protest on July 26. He said Rafizi's presence at the rally would send a clear signal that he truly wanted to see the matter investigated independently and transparently. On Tuesday, Rafizi and eight other PKR MPs called on the government to establish an RCI and parliamentary select committee hearing, following delays in the appointment of top judicial positions, including that of chief justice, which they said amounted to a constitutional crisis. Their concerns arose ahead of the mandatory retirement of former chief justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and Court of Appeal president Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim. While it remains unclear who will be appointed to the two top posts, Chief Judge of Malaya Hasnah Hashim is currently serving as acting chief justice, while Federal Court judge Zabariah Yusof has been named acting Court of Appeal president.
