Pulau Gaya can emulate Tuaran's multi-million cockle farming initiative

Published on: Tuesday, July 08, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 08, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: 'These efforts will create jobs, empower youth with modern fisheries skills and elevate Tanjung Aru and Pulau Gaya as hubs for quality seafood.' Kota Kinabalu: Tuaran's multi-million ringgit cockle farming initiative could be emulated in Pulau Gaya to boost local livelihoods, while solar energy could help resolve longstanding utility issues, said Dr Ritchie Jay Cheng, a committee member of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) Tanjung Aru. He said by embracing the potential of aquaculture and seafood processing, coastal communities here can boost livelihoods and support the local tourism supply chain,' he said during a donation of 50 life jackets to licensed fishermen on the island, last Sunday. 'The RM34.4 million in annual revenue potential complements Sabah's millions of tourists. 'We want downstream maritime economies to thrive alongside the booming tourism sector, ensuring that all players, including fishermen, benefit equitably. 'These efforts will create jobs, empower youth with modern fisheries skills and elevate Tanjung Aru and Pulau Gaya as hubs for quality seafood. 'This complements the Sabah Blue Economy Council's agenda to develop fisheries and tourism responsibly.' He noted that his team had found many fishermen lacked proper safety gear, often heading out to sea without life jackets. 'This is our first initiative of its kind, and we hope it will inspire and uplift the community. We hope GRS Tanjung Aru continues championing coastal communities and unlock long-term economic potential for a stronger Sabah.' Dr Ritchie said Pulau Gaya's long-standing utility issues could be addressed through renewable energy solutions. 'In my view, solar is the way forward. If each household is equipped with a solar panel, we can significantly reduce their reliance on conventional power sources,' he said. On politics, Dr Ritchie reaffirmed PGRS Tanjung Aru's readiness to support Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming State election. 'We will stand by our GRS allies, whether we contest together or go solo. Either way, we're ready,' he said, adding that the division currently has over 90 active branches. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? GRS ready for Sabah polls, says Hajiji — but seat talks still pending

TUARAN, June 7 — Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is fully prepared to face the 17th state election, said its chairman, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Hajiji, who is also the Chief Minister, said GRS has conducted a series of training sessions across constituencies and state assembly areas to strengthen the coalition's election machinery ahead of the polls. 'Clearly, GRS is ready. We have established our election machinery and conducted several rounds of training in preparation. 'However, discussions on seat allocations have yet to take place,' he told reporters after officiating the Aidiladha sacrificial ritual at the Tuaran District Police Headquarters today. Also present were Sabah Minister of Rural Development, Datuk Jahid Jahim; Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai; and Tuaran Police Chief, Supt Noraidin Ag Maidin. The Sabah Legislative Assembly will automatically dissolve on Nov 11, ending the five-year term that began with its official opening by Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin on Nov 12, 2020, paving the way for the 17th state election. Commenting on the cooperation with Barisan Nasional (BN) for the upcoming election, Hajiji said GRS remains open to discussions with the party's leaders. 'The last time I met the BN chairman (Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) was before the fasting month. While political matters were discussed, there have been no further talks on collaboration or related issues since then. 'There is no issue with meeting; I have great respect for all friends, especially the BN chairman, and we are very open on this matter,' he said. However, he said any party-related matters, including the 17th state election and potential cooperation with other parties, must first be discussed with the GRS Supreme Council before any decisions are made. — Bernama
