What is violating gambling rules in MLB and what happens if you break them

What is violating gambling rules in MLB and what happens if you break them (Image via Getty) 'It's not about the money. It's about protecting the game.' That's what Major League Baseball says when it comes to its strict gambling rules. Recently, the spotlight has turned toward betting in baseball. Some players, and even an umpire, were punished for breaking these rules. So what does violating gambling rules in MLB actually mean? And what happens when someone crosses the line? Understanding What Counts as Gambling Violations in MLB Major League Baseball has very clear rules under its official Rule 21. This rule is made to protect the fairness of the sport. Breaking these rules is seen as a serious offense. So, what is violating gambling rules in MLB? It means doing anything that could question the fairness of the game. Here's what counts: Betting on baseball games (especially ones involving your own team) Using or sharing inside information Working with illegal betting operators Not reporting suspicious betting activity Using shared accounts for bets Even if a player places bets on other sports, doing it inside a team facility or not reporting it properly can be considered a violation. Also Read: Eli Willits Goes No. 1 Overall To Washington Nationals In 2025 MLB Draft The rules apply to players, umpires, coaches, and even team staff. MLB allows legal sports betting on other sports, but only through approved platforms and in a personal capacity. Anything that could harm the league's image is closely watched. Why MLB Is Enforcing These Rules Strictly in 2024 and 2025 Many events have drawn attention to these rules over the last year. Tucupita Marcano was permanently banned in June 2024 for betting on contests including those involving his own team. This was a clear breach of Rule 21. During an investigation of possible infractions during games, Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz was placed on leave in July 2025. Even suspected rule violations are handled very seriously by the league, as the case reveals. Still, no choice has yet been made. Not even umpires are exempt. Although MLB dismissed umpire Pat Hoberg in May 2024 for exposing a betting account, he was not shown to have influenced any results. These acts make it quite obvious that MLB wants all members of the game to avoid any gambling activity that could damage its fan trust. The league is watching closely and the penalties for breaking the rules are more severe than ever. Source: Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz placed on leave due to MLB betting investigation

CHICAGO — Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz has been placed on 'non-disciplinary paid leave' through the end of the All-Star break as a result of an MLB investigation, with multiple sources telling The Athletic that the probe is related to gambling. The league announced that Ortiz would be placed on leave Thursday morning; MLB said in a statement it would not comment further until the conclusion of the investigation. Advertisement Ortiz had been scheduled to start for the Guardians on Thursday night against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Joey Cantillo was promoted from Triple-A Columbus to start instead. The Guardians released the following statement: 'The Guardians have been notified by Major League Baseball that Luis Ortiz has been placed on leave per an agreement with the Players Association due to an ongoing league investigation. The Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time, and will respect the league's confidential investigative process.' In 2024, MLB banned San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano for life for betting on his own team. The league also suspended four other players for a year for betting on baseball. MLB umpire Pat Hoberg was also fired earlier this year after it was learned that he shared sports betting accounts with a friend who bet on baseball games. Ortiz, acquired in a trade with the Pirates in November, owns a 4.36 ERA in 16 starts this year. The 26-year-old played for Pittsburgh from 2022-24.

Athletics RHP Michael Kelly reinstated after 1-year betting ban

June 5 - The Athletics reinstated right-hander Michael Kelly from the suspended list on Thursday after he completed a one-year ban for betting on baseball games. On June 4, 2024, Major League Baseball announced a lifetime ban for San Diego Padres infielder/outfielder Tucupita Marcano for betting on baseball games. Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Andrew Saalfrank, Kelly and two minor leaguers received one-year bans for violating the league's sports betting rules and policies. Kelly was a minor leaguer in the Houston Astros organization when, according to an MLB investigation, he made 10 bets in October 2021 for less than $100. He won five of the bets and collected a net win of about $28. Kelly didn't bet on games involving his team, per the investigation. Kelly, 32, is 4-2 with a 2.94 ERA, 20 walks and 42 strikeouts across 52 innings in 46 relief appearances over parts of the past three seasons. He was 3-2 with a 2.59 ERA in 31 1/3 innings over 28 relief appearances last season when he received his suspension. In other moves on Thursday, the Athletics activated veteran left-hander T.J. McFarland from the 15-day injured list after he dealt with a left groin injury, optioned rookie right-handers Elvis Alvarado and Justin Sterner to Triple-A Las Vegas, and designated infielder/outfielder CJ Alexander for assignment. McFarland, who turns 36 on Sunday, last pitched on May 11. He is 0-0 this season with a 5.23 ERA, three walks and four strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings over 18 relief appearances. For his career, McFarland is 26-20 with a 4.13 ERA, one save, 174 walks and 322 strikeouts in 541 innings over 451 regular-season games (three starts) for the Baltimore Orioles (2013-16), Arizona Diamondbacks (2017-19), St. Louis Cardinals (2021-22), New York Mets (2023) and Athletics (2020, 2024-present). McFarland led the major leagues with 79 appearances last season. Sterner, 28, was 1-3 with a 4.28 ERA, 14 walks and 30 strikeouts in 29 games (one start) this season. Alvarado, 26, was 0-0 with a 7.50 ERA, three walks and eight strikeouts in six innings over four relief appearances in his rookie season. Alexander, 28, batted .176 (3-for-17) in six games this season. --Field Level Media

D-backs' Andrew Saalfrank reinstated from betting ban

June 5 - The Arizona Diamondbacks reinstated pitcher Andrew Saalfrank from the ineligible list on Thursday, marking the end of his one-year suspension for betting on baseball games. The Diamondbacks optioned the 27-year-old left-hander to the Arizona Complex League. The team designated right-hander Scott McGough for assignment to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. On June 4, 2024, Major League Baseball announced a lifetime ban for San Diego Padres infielder/outfielder Tucupita Marcano for betting on baseball games. Saalfrank, Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly and two minor leaguers received one-year bans for violating the league's sports betting rules and policies. An MLB investigation found that Saalfrank placed small-scale bets on big-league games while he was in the minors. He wagered a total of $445 over 29 bets, including four involving Diamondbacks games. Saalfrank made two relief appearances for Arizona in 2024 and allowed four runs in one inning of work. In 2023, he made 10 scoreless relief appearances in the regular season and posted a 3.18 ERA in 11 postseason appearances, including three scoreless outings against the Texas Rangers in the World Series. McGough, 35, has no decisions and a 6.43 ERA in seven relief appearances this season. He is 3-10 with a 5.86 ERA and nine saves in 102 career games (three starts) for the Miami Marlins (2015) and Diamondbacks (2023-25). --Field Level Media
