China stopping India's bullet train project to gain momentum? Supply to key products delayed due to..., MEA says...
New Delhi: In a concerning development that threatens to derail India's much-anticipated dream project—the Bullet Train—China has emerged as the key source of the crisis. According to the reports, three massive Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), crucial for this ambitious project, are currently stuck at a Chinese port resulting into delays in the country's most talked-about rail project. These TBMs, used for tunneling underground, were ordered from the German company Herrenknecht. However, they were manufactured at the company's factory in Guangzhou, China. It is important to note that the first part of these machines was supposed to arrive in India by October 2024, but Chinese authorities have not yet approved their release. This delay is now becoming a major headache for the project. The Ministry of Railways has brought the issue to the attention of the Ministry of External Affairs. According to sources, India has initiated high-level talks with China to get the machines released. Along with the TBMs, some other critical equipment required for the project is also reportedly stuck. These Were the Locations Where TBM Machines Were to Be Used It is important to note that the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is handling this Rs 1.08 lakh crore project. NHSRCL had planned to deploy three TBM machines. TBM-1 and TBM-2 were to be used for tunneling between Sawli (Ghansoli)–Vikhroli and Vikhroli–Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) TBM-3 was supposed to arrive earlier for the Sawli to Vikhroli section. However, none of the machines have arrived in India so far. According to sources, there has been no change in the final project deadline as of now. What will be the impact of delays in TBM deployment? If the deployment of TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) equipment get delayed, then it could affect the construction of the 21-kilometre-long tunnel from Bandra-Kurla Complex to Shilphata. This stretch includes a 7-kilometre-long undersea tunnel beneath the Thane Creek, which is the most challenging part of the project. Interestingly, TBM machines were also brought in from China for the Mumbai Metro and Coastal Road projects — but that was before the 2020 Galwan clash. In today's changed diplomatic environment, these delays are raising many questions. Is the delay purely technical, or is there another reason behind it?

Chinese companies to supply tunnel boring machines for Belgrade Metro
BELGRADE, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese companies will supply the first two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) for the construction of Belgrade's metro system, marking a major step forward in one of Serbia's most significant infrastructure projects. According to a press release from the City of Belgrade, the contract was signed on Friday by the representatives of POWERCHINA and China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation Limited (CRCHI), one of the world's leading TBM manufacturers. The signing was attended by Andreja Mladenovic, director of the public utility company "Belgrade Metro and Train." POWERCHINA will build the tunnel section of Metro Line 1, while CRCHI will deliver the machines, which weigh 2,000 tons each and have a diameter of nearly 10 meters. Delivery and installation are scheduled for April and June 2026. "This agreement is a key step toward launching full-scale construction. The arrival of TBM machines means we are ready to begin tunnel excavation and deliver the kind of metro system Belgrade deserves," Mladenovic said, adding that CRCHI currently has over 15 TBMs operating across infrastructure projects in Europe. The City of Belgrade noted that the partnership between POWERCHINA and CRCHI brings together global experience and advanced technology to support the construction of a modern, efficient, and safe metro system that meets the highest international standards.

Hamdan bin Mohammed attends MoU signing between RTA and The Boring Company for the ‘Dubai Loop'
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and US-based firm The Boring Company to study the implementation of the 'Dubai Loop' tunnel project. The proposed 17-kilometre tunnel, featuring 11 stations, is designed to transport over 20,000 passengers per hour. It is part of a long-term plan to construct a citywide loop transportation network. Signed during the 2025 World Governments Summit (WGS), the MoU aims to strengthen the partnership between both parties in tunnel excavation and construction. The MoU was signed by His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA; and John Hering, Lead Investor and Senior Advisor to The Boring Company, in the presence of senior officials from both sides. HE Al Tayer said: 'The MoU aligns with the directives of the leadership to forge partnerships with leading global companies, reinforcing Dubai's position at the forefront of advanced and sustainable mobility solutions. It aims to implement cutting-edge technologies, foster innovative transport solutions, and create a dynamic ecosystem for the advancement of transportation technologies. Additionally, the agreement facilitates knowledge and expertise exchange to develop transportation systems tailored to the city's evolving needs.' He added that the technology used in the system offers rapid execution, lower costs than conventional tunnelling methods, and minimal impact on existing infrastructure and road networks. Scope of MoU The MoU, HE Al Tayer noted, involves conducting studies and exchanging information on the specifications and standards required by the RTA for innovative transport systems, as well as insights into current and future trends in the mobility market. It also focuses on gathering data on system developments, pilot routes, and applied safety standards. Hering highlighted the advantages of the loop system. 'The Boring Company aims to transform the transportation sector by constructing safe, fast, and cost-efficient tunnels for passenger transit, utilities, and freight.' He noted that the loop system incorporates innovative and sustainable technologies. 'The loop system offers rapid connectivity solutions, enhancing passenger mobility and reducing travel time thanks to the speed and seamless flow of tunnel transportation.' Hering added: 'The company adopts a fully integrated vertical approach to streamline operations and reduce costs. It designs and manufactures its own Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), engineers tunnel structures and stations, operates tunnel excavation machinery, and manages the underground loop transportation system.' Held under the theme 'Shaping Future Governments', this year's World Governments Summit convened over 30 heads of state and government, more than 80 international and regional organisations and 140 government delegations. Its agenda featured 21 global forums exploring major future trends and transformations, over 200 interactive sessions with more than 300 prominent speakers – including presidents, ministers, experts, thought leaders, and decision-makers – and over 30 ministerial meetings and roundtables attended by more than 400 ministers.
