Why Manchester United failed in Victor Osimhen pursuit as he chooses next club

Manchester United were interested in signing Victor Osimhen this summer, but the striker is not set for Premier League, choosing a surprising path instead. The 26-year-old spent last season on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli and enjoyed great success in Türkiye. He scored 37 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions and won both the Super Lig and the Turkish Cup. Italian publication Corriere dello Sport report that, despite interest from elsewhere, Osimhen wants to continue his career with Galatasaray and make his loan move permanent. Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal have made an offer to sign the Nigeria international, but he has rejected it, while there is also interest from Juventus and Manchester United. Turkish journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu reports that the Red Devils made contact over a possible move, but asked Osimhen to take a wage cut which he turned down. Instead he is intent on returning to Galatasaray, although there is the small matter of a transfer fee to be sorted out. The prolific forward has a release clause of €75m (£64.7m) in his Napoli contract and the Serie A champions are not willing to negotiate on that figure. Galatasaray can get their man, but they must stump up the full fee, which they are yet to do. Al Hilal is the only club so far to meet the release clause, while they also offered Osimhen an eye-watering €40m (£34.5m) per season, but he has rejected the approach as he wants to remain in Europe. As long as Galatasaray have not found the £64.7m to pay for Osimhen, then there remains hope for other suitors, but he is reportedly set on moving back to Turkey. It is another blow for Manchester United in their pursuit of a new striker, having seemingly missed out on Viktor Gyokeres as well. The Sporting forward was a target for the Red Devils, with manager Ruben Amorim keen to work with his former player again. However, the Swede now appears set for Arsenal, with talks at an advanced stage and Gyokeres making it clear that he wants to join the Gunners. More Trending Ollie Watkins is another target for Manchester United, but The Athletic report that Aston Villa do not intend on selling the England international this summer. With deals proving tricky to agree, the Red Devils have also been linked with Dominic Calvert-Lewin who is available on a free transfer after leaving Everton. A move for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo is still being pursued but Manchester United are yet to meet the Bees' £70m valuation. As yet, Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Paraguayan teenager Diego Leon from Cerro Porteno remain the only new arrivals this summer. Figueiredo joins JDT after dream Malaysia debut

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) have signed another Harimau Malaya heritage star with the arrival of Brazilian-born forward Joao Figueiredo ahead of the new season. "Figueiredo brings his commitment and determination to JDT," read the caption on the Southern Tigers' official Instagram post announcing the signing on Sunday. The 29-year-old made his debut for Malaysia on June 10 in the 4-0 thrashing of Vietnam in an Asian Cup qualifier at Bukit Jalil, scoring the opener in the 49th minute. Figueiredo joins JDT from Turkish Super League side Istanbul Basaksehir, where he netted seven goals and chipped in with two assists last season. He also made his mark in the Turkish Cup, scoring three goals in as many appearances. His arrival adds further firepower to JDT's already star-studded frontline. Figueiredo is the latest in a string of heritage players to join the Super League champions this season, linking up with Dutch-Malaysian midfielder Hector Hevel and Spanish-Malaysian centre-back Jon Irazabal.

Victor Osimhen transfer twist as £59m decision made on Man Utd target

Victor Osimhen is the subject of major interest from Manchester United, Galatasaray and Al-Hilal, with the striker now choosing to snub a move to one of those three clubs Victor Osimhen has rejected a move to Al-Hilal in a potential boost to Manchester United's hopes of signing the striker. Osimhen spent the season on loan at Galatasaray, firing them to the Turkish Super Lig and Turkish Cup double. He also previously starred for Napoli as they won the Serie A title back in 2023. But his career in Naples is over, with the Italian side keen to sell him this summer as he enters the final year of his contract. ‌ Gala are keen to bring him back to Istanbul on a permanent basis. But they faced a serious challenge from Hilal, who have cash to spent after missing out on the Saudi Pro League title this season. ‌ Hilal have just appointed Simeone Inzaghi as their new manager, fresh from leading Inter Milan to their second Champions League final in three years. They are able to call on bigger spending power than their Turkish rivals. But United are also sizing up a move for the 26-year-old as they continue to rebuild Ruben Amorim's squad. And in a huge boost for their hopes, it appears that Hilal's move for the Nigerian international is dead in the water. Hilal had submitted a £59million bid to Napoli for Osimhen and were waiting for the Italian club to respond. They were also prepared to hand the striker a bumper salary of £21m per year plus bonuses. But Osimhen has now rejected that, dashing Hilal's dreams of bringing the striker to the Middle East. Galatasaray have now moved into pole position and are trying to complete a deal. They have offered Osimhen a salary of £17.7m per year and are racing to get him to put pen to paper. Gala boss Okan Buruk has admitted he expects to count on Osimhen in his squad next season. ‌ Buruk said recently: "Osimhen is important... He is positive and loves this place very much. He did not say goodbye to anyone after the last match. If he had the intention of leaving, his behavior would have been different. I see him as 51 percent staying." Osimhen himself insisted towards the end of the season that he had made a decision on his future. But the striker refused to give a definitive answer as he looked to help Gala wrap up the title. 'The rumour is going around about me linked with the Premier League. Of course, when you're one of the hottest strikers in the world you expect this type of thing, it's one of the biggest and best leagues in the world," he said. ‌ 'For me, I'm with Napoli, signed a new contract and enjoying my time there with the team, at the end of the season I've already made up my mind, I already know what I want to do in my career. 'Since I've started, I've been the one making my own decisions on everything and it's working out well for me. I already know the next step I want to take so for now I just want to finish the season strong.'

Victor Osimhen transfer blow as Man Utd may miss out after staggering £34m offer

Manchester United have been linked with Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who scored 37 goals in 41 games on loan at Galatasaray, leaving him with a decision to make over his future Victor Osimhen has just five days to decide on a lucrative move to Al-Hilal in time for the Club World Cup - or wait for Manchester United. Osimhen, 26, is fresh off a surprise prolific loan spell with Galatasaray, helping the Istanbul giants win the league title by 11 points and lift the Turkish Cup. The Nigerian striker bagged 37 goals in 41 appearances but is due back at parent club Napoli, who plan to sell him to the highest bidder. Osimhen had a high-profile fallout with the club's hierarchy last season which led to his surprise move to Turkey. ‌ Napoli hope that a club matches his £63million release clause but Galatasaray are trying to sign him for less. The Super Lig champions could be blown out of the water, though, as Al-Hilal have turned their attention to Osimhen after being snubbed by United captain Bruno Fernandes. ‌ The Saudi side, who were keen on him last summer, want to make a big impression at the Club World Cup and have until June 10 to purchase new signings. They've agreed a £30m deal with AC Milan for left-back Theo Hernandez - who's yet to decide on the move - and have appointed Simone Inzaghi as their new manager fresh from his Champions League final humiliation with Inter on Saturday. According to German outlet Neunzigplus, Al-Hilal are willing to pay Osimhen a staggering £34m per year - nearly triple Galatasaray's £13m proposal. Al-Hilal are also willing to sell former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic to free-up a starting place. But could Osimhen reject both and hold out for United? The Napoli outcast has been linked with the Red Devils amid their hunt for a new centre forward. United were targeting Ipswich's Liam Delap until Chelsea stole a march and announced his signing for £30m on Wednesday. Alongside Juventus, Chelsea were also tipped to sign Osimhen, so the stars could be aligning for the 26-year-old to end up at Old Trafford. But there's a sticking point. Should Manchester United sign Victor Osimhen? Have your say in the comments section. ‌ Having already shelled out £62.5m to sign Wolves attacker Matheus Cunha and being asked to pay £60m for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, United will be reliant on sales to make any further big-money signings. The Red Devils will listen to offers for their entire squad, although no departures are imminent. It's been suggested that United could use Rasmus Hojlund or Alejandro Garnacho as a makeweight in a deal for Osimhen, who's entered the final year of his contract with Napoli. There's nothing to say that the ex-Lille and Wolfsburg star couldn't join Al-Hilal after the Club World Cup, however, and Galatasaray would surely be willing to wait given his successful loan. Osimhen has been tight-lipped on his future, last addressing speculation in February. "I don't know to be honest," the Nigeria international admitted. ‌ "A few months ago, nobody ever thought I would come to Galatasaray, despite how big of a club they are. I live for the moment. [As] for what's going to happen in the summer, I don't know. "But I want everyone to understand something: I really love this club so much. I love the fans, I love everyone associated with this club, from the president down to the coaching staff."

John Lundstram and Borna Barisic facing Trabzonspor axe

The former Rangers pair joined the Turkish side on free transfers last summer but are now facing uncertain futures. Left-back Barisic has hardly featured, while midfielder Lundstram has been criticised for his performances. Reports in Turkey suggest Barisic's contract may even be terminated. Trabzonspor manager Fatih Tekke needs to cut seven players from his squad this summer due to a quota of 12 foreign players, with 14 currently in the squad and more returning from loans. The club are also planning to sign another five players in the transfer market. Read more: Russell Martin reveals he 'turned down a few jobs' before agreeing Rangers deal Rangers poised to announce Russell Martin as their new manager Barisic and the club are reportedly in discussions over cancelling his contract, while Lundstram, 31, is at risk of being moved on due to his age. Both players signed three-year deals with Trabzonspor last year, so their departures may not be straightforward. The team's disappointing European campaign, which saw them crash out of both the Europa and Conference Leagues, and a poor start to the league season have contributed to the need for a squad overhaul. However, they did manage to recover somewhat, finishing seventh in the league and reaching the final of the Turkish Cup. The team went through three permanent managers over the course of the season, with Tekke only appointed in March. Barisic's season was further disrupted by a loan move to Leganes in Spain in January, which was cut short by a serious injury in his first game. Ex-Man City star Stefan Savic, Edin Visca, and Anthony Nwakaeme are also said to be likely candidates for summer sales.
