In line with his commitment to developing world-class air infrastructure and enhancing connectivity, the Prime Minister inaugurated the New Terminal Building at Tuticorin Airport, developed at a cost of approximately Rs 450 crore, designed to meet the growing aviation demands of the southern region. The Prime Minister undertook a walkthrough of the new terminal building at Tuticorin Airport. Spread across 17,340 square meters, the terminal will be equipped to handle 1,350 passengers during peak hours and 20 lakh passengers annually, with future expansion capacity to accommodate up to 1,800 peak-hour passengers and 25 lakh passengers annually. With 100 per cent LED lighting, energy-efficient electrical and mechanical (E&M) systems, and treated water reuse through an on-site Sewage Treatment Plant, the terminal has been built to achieve a GRIHA-4 sustainability rating. This modern infrastructure is expected to significantly enhance regional air connectivity and stimulate tourism, trade, and investment in southern Tamil Nadu. The second project is the 6-laning of the 5.16 km NH-138 Tuticorin Port Road, built at around Rs 200 crore. Featuring underpasses and bridges, it will ease cargo flow, cut logistics costs, and support port-led industrial growth around VO Chidambaranar Port. Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Tamil Nadu, will on Sunday attend the grand 'Aadi Thiruvathirai' celebrations at the historic Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple to mark 1,000 years of Emperor Rajendra Chola's maritime expedition. He will also release a commemorative coin honouring Emperor Rajendra Chola I during the ceremony, celebrating the legacy of the Chola king's Southeast Asian naval expedition and the temple's millennial anniversary. His visit follows a high-profile day in the state, which included the inauguration of major development projects worth Rs 4,900 crore and a significant political meeting with AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami. On Saturday evening, after arriving in Tuticorin from the Maldives, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the newly developed terminal building at Tuticorin Airport, built for Rs 452 crore. He also laid foundation stones and dedicated several infrastructure projects, including power transmission works related to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, doubling of key railway lines, electrification of the Madurai-Bodinayakkanur railway section, and logistics enhancements at the V.O. Chidambaranar Port. Following these engagements, PM Modi reached Tiruchirappalli and checked into a private star hotel for the night. Later that night, he held a closed-door meeting with AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami at Trichy Airport. This marks their first formal interaction since the AIADMK renewed its alliance with the BJP ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The meeting is seen as politically significant amid ongoing deliberations over power-sharing and seat allocation within the NDA in Tamil Nadu. This morning, at 11 a.m., the Prime Minister, while on his way to the Trichy Airport, will greet the public, particularly at key points like the Cantonment and Bharathidasan Road, where iron barricades have been erected to facilitate a brief roadshow. From the airport, PM Modi will travel by helicopter to Gangaikonda Cholapuram. Upon arrival, he will be welcomed with a poorna kumbham by the seer of the Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam. A maha abhishekam using holy Ganga water brought from Varanasi will be performed to Lord Brihadeeswarar. The Prime Minister is expected to spend three minutes in silent meditation at the sanctum sanctorum and then visit an archaeological photo exhibition arranged by the state's Department of Archaeology. The cultural segment of the event will feature a special symphony concert by music maestro Ilaiyaraaja, which the Prime Minister is expected to attend briefly. At 1.45 p.m., he will depart by helicopter from Gangaikonda Cholapuram and land at Trichy Airport by 2.25 p.m. PM Modi is scheduled to return to Delhi at 2.30 p.m.

The Prime Minister inaugurated and dedicated to the nation several projects across various sectors that will boost regional connectivity, improve logistics efficiency, strengthen clean energy infrastructure, etc. The PM has inaugurated the New Terminal Building at Tuticorin Airport developed at a cost of around Rs 450 crore. He also dedicated to the nation two strategically significant highway projects. The first is the 4-laning of the 50 km Sethiyathope–Cholapuram stretch of NH-36, developed at more than Rs 2,350 crore under the Vikravandi–Thanjavur corridor. The second project is the 6-laning of the 5.16 km NH-138 Tuticorin Port Road, built at around Rs 200 crore. The PM inaugurated North Cargo Berth–III with a cargo handling capacity of 6.96 MMTPA at VO Chidambaranar Port worth around Rs 285 crore. Modi also dedicated three key railway infrastructure projects in southern Tamil Nadu to boost sustainable and efficient connectivity. This includes: electrification of the 90 km Madurai–Bodinayakkanur line, Rs 650 crore doubling of the 21 km Nagercoil Town–Kanniyakumari section (part of the Thiruvananthapuram–Kanniyakumari project), doubling of the Aralvaymozhi–Nagercoil Junction (12.87km) and Tirunelveli–Melappalayam (3.6 km) sections. He also laid the foundation stone for a major power transmission project – the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) for evacuation of electricity from Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 and 4 (2×1000 MW). This project, developed at a cost of around Rs 550 crore, will include a 400 kV (quad) double-circuit transmission line from Kudankulam to the Tuticorin-II GIS substation and associated terminal equipment.

Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend a series of high-profile programmes in Tamil Nadu on Sunday, July 27, including the millennium celebrations of Rajendra Chola I's maritime expedition and the commencement of the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple's construction. In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister wrote: 'Tomorrow, 27th July will witness a very special programme to mark a thousand years of the maritime expedition of the great Rajendra Chola I to South East Asia and the commencement of the construction of the iconic Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple, a shining example of Chola architecture. It is our privilege that a commemorative coin honouring Rajendra Chola I is being released, also celebrating the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival.' Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, currently recovering at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai, has deputed Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu to submit a memorandum to the visiting Prime Minister. The memorandum outlines key demands related to the state's financial and developmental concerns. In his post on X, Stalin said: 'Due to my hospitalisation, I have sent a petition containing the requests to be presented to the Honorable Prime Minister visiting Tamil Nadu through the Chief Secretary. Minister Thangam Thennarasu will present it to the Honourable Prime Minister.' Security has been significantly tightened in Tiruchirappalli and Ariyalur districts ahead of the Prime Minister's visit to Gangaikonda Cholapuram. A five-tier security arrangement has been in place since Thursday, with deployment of the Special Protection Group (SPG), Tamil Nadu police, and central security agencies. The Prime Minister is expected to arrive at Tiruchy airport around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, after inaugurating the expanded terminal at Thoothukudi airport. PM Modi's visit comes immediately after returning from official trips to the UK and the Maldives. He will first arrive in Tuticorin, where he will unveil a series of infrastructure and connectivity initiatives aimed at boosting the state's economic and industrial growth. In a significant step toward enhancing regional air infrastructure, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the new terminal building at Tuticorin Airport, built at a cost of around Rs 450 crore. He will stay overnight at the tourist bungalow in Tiruchy, which has also come under intense security cover. On Sunday morning, PM Modi will travel by helicopter to Ariyalur to participate in the Rajendra Chola I millennium celebrations at Gangaikonda Cholapuram. SPG teams have conducted security sweeps at all critical points, including Tiruchy airport, the tourist bungalow, and the event venue. Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) teams have scanned the entire route, and residents near key locations have been asked to adhere strictly to police instructions. Local authorities have also enforced a ban on flying drones and unmanned aerial vehicles from July 24 to July 27. District administrations have been instructed to maintain heightened vigilance throughout the Prime Minister's visit, which concludes on Sunday evening. The event is being held to honour the maritime prowess and architectural legacy of the Chola empire.
