Can't find it anywhere else? Try the national sports card convention

Every collector has their grail, the piece that feels just out of reach. For many, It's not about price — it's usually just impossible to find. The National is where those impossible-to-find diamonds in the rough finally show up. This isn't your local card show; it's the hobby's last resort … My own collecting journey began with my grandfather. When I was a kid, he'd take me to flea markets searching for Harry Heilmann cards, a Hall of Famer who played alongside Ty Cobb for the Detroit Tigers between 1914-1930. My grandpa shared Heilmann's last name and claimed we were related. I've come to terms with that most likely being untrue, however any seasoned collector will tell you, collecting's more fun when it has a purpose. When my grandpa passed away, I inherited his Harry Heilmann collection. Regular card shows rarely have Heilmann, but The National always comes through. I'm not alone. For many collectors searching for their grails The National is their hail mary. We asked our Mantel community what they'll be searching for at The National that they can't find anywhere else. Here is some of what we heard: CardPortfolio is searching for an elusive PSA 10 Hulk Hogan from the 2013 Upper Deck Employee 6 card set. He writes: I am one Hulk Hogan PSA 10 away (my BGS 9.5 pictured) from completing this 2013 Upper Deck Employee 6 Card Set in a perfect PSA 10 set which is incredibly hard to do considering: There were only 125 of each card produced These grade incredibly hard with the highest pop of the 6 card set in a PSA 10 being the Michael Phelps in a Pop 8 I haven't seen one PSA 10 Hogan card at auction since I started trying to complete this set in 2020, HELP PLEASE! More info on set. Mantel user clrshonuff is searching for one of the longest running card sets you've never heard of. He says: I will be searching for 1938, 2011, & 2013 Horrors of War cards for my sets/collection. There are 1st Bowman's and then there is this. Mantel user CPFJAY is looking for John Smoltz' very first baseball card and it's not from Topps. It's a card from his junior year at Waverly High School. For many collectors searching at the National, it's all about the aesthetic. And perhaps a little bit about price. Some people like McFarm21 are very specific about their grading company, for him it's SGC Black Labels only ... He says: I will pay PayPal plus shipping and a finders fee for any of these three at a reasonable price. SGC black label slab. Color is more important than grades. Pirates Topps team cards: 1966 #404, 1967 #492 and 1970 #608. Whether you're chasing vintage gems or modern rarities, every collector can find a reason to make the pilgrimage. What are you looking for at The National? Let us know on Mantel.

Fact Check: Former Trump White House lawyer Ty Cobb said president is 'worse than anyone in our history'

Claim: In early July 2025, former Trump White House lawyer Ty Cobb said Trump was "worse than anyone in our history." Rating: In early July 2025, a rumor spread that Ty Cobb, a lawyer and former member of the White House legal team during the first administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, said Trump was "worse than anyone in our history." For example, a post on Facebook shared the alleged quote (archived): The post, which included a photograph of Cobb, read in part: [Trump} (sic) is worse than anyone in our history in my experience and opinion. As people seem to have forgotten, I was very critical of Biden and despite knowing him and his family well, I spent 4 years writing about his cognitive decline and weak foreign policy. He had competent advisors though including very decent men as AG and head of the FBI. While you could fairly question their effectiveness you couldn't doubt their character. Trump has real contempt for the country, appoints wholly unqualified people to key positions and just kicked 12 million people off Medicaid, eliminated child food support and killed worldwide healthcare efforts monitoring pandemic producing diseases including Ebola (among countless other dangerous things). Other Facebook posts relayed Cobb's supposed quote, and it also appeared on X and Reddit. The rumor seemingly first appeared in a July 5, 2025, post (archived). Indeed, Cobb confirmed the quote was correctly attributed. "I didn't realize it was being so widely circulated," he said in an email. Cobb added he had written these words in response to an acquaintance's private post on Facebook. While Cobb asked Snopes not to publish the exchange to respect the person's privacy, Snopes was able to see the original comment and verified that the text internet users reproduced and shared matched what Cobb wrote almost word for word — except for the first word. In his original comment, Cobb had written "He," referring to Trump, as the president had been one of the topics of the exchange. "Former White House Attorney Ty Cobb: 'Big Lie Has Been Good Only for Trump.'" NBC News, 14 Jul. 2022,

CNN Host Claims Trump Is ‘Clearly Rattled' by TACO Nickname

Donald Trump is 'clearly rattled' after being confronted with the his new 'TACO' nickname during a press conference earlier this week, says CNN's Erin Burnett. The president had a meltdown on Wednesday after being made aware of the acronym, which stands for 'Trump Always Chickens Out.' The term was coined by Wall Street traders due to his habit of repeatedly backing down from his threats. 'That's a nasty question,' he said in response to the reporter who asked about the name at a White House press briefing this week. 'Don't ever say what you said. That's a nasty question… To me, that's the nastiest question.' Talking to former White House lawyer Ty Cobb about the incident on Thursday, Burnett referenced an AI-generated picture of Trump wearing a suit made out of tacos which was posted on the Drudge Report website following the incident. 'This came through after he was asked about the TACO trade, and it was by a reporter from CNBC, and it rattled him, clearly,' said Burnett. 'How much is it bothering him right now?' 'Well, I think it bothers him very much,' Cobb said in response. 'I mean, what you heard there was the rant of a wounded narcissist. You know he doesn't take criticism well, and he responds typically with these riffs like that. 'He just… when he gets deeply into his own fears and insecurity like this, he's capable of saying anything. This is very troubling to him.' He added: 'It's an affront to him that judges hold him to account. It's an affront to him that when the facts are not with him, that he's confronted with them. He's not capable of saying 'I made a mistake', he's not capable of saying 'let me see if I can clear this up,' it's all very, very personal.' Trump has yet to make any further comment on the nickname since his rant on Wednesday, but the term has since been picked up by several leading Democratic figures and proliferated on social media. California Governor Gavin Newsom mocked the blocking of Trump's tariff policies by a federal court by quipping 'it's raining tacos today' while Jon Cooper, a former campaign chair for Barack Obama, penned a taco-themed diss poem aimed at the president on X, and captioned it with the hashtag #TACOTrump. 'Taco Don' memes have also begun to flourish amongst users on X and Bluesky, many of which involve AI-generated images of the president entombed in various taco-related items or dressed as a chicken. Responding to the court rulings which kickstarted the tariff chaos and minting of his new nickname on Thursday night, Trump posted on Truth Social: 'Radical Left Judges, together with some very bad people, are destroying America. Under this decision, Trillions of Dollars would be lost by our Country, money that will MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.' 'It would be the harshest financial ruling ever leveled on us as a Sovereign Nation,' he added. 'The President of the United States must be allowed to protect America against those that are doing it Economic and Financial harm.'
