Seahawks were "very disappointed" the D.K. Metcalf news landed on Tyler Lockett's day
Wednesday was supposed to be Tyler Lockett Day in Seattle. It instead became D.K. Metcalf Could Be Traded Day. And the Seahawks weren't thrilled about it. G.M. John Schneider told Seattle Sports 710 on Thursday that they weren't thrilled the Metcalf news overpowered the end of Lockett's 10-year run in Seattle. 'Probably not intentional, but very disappointed in the timing,' Schneider said, via Brady Henderson of 'We wanted this to be a very special day. We wanted it to be Tyler Lockett Day. . . . I felt bad for Tyler. The TV's all about D.K. instead of Tyler Lockett. It kind of correlates with his whole career. This guy is one of the most underrated wide receivers in NFL history.' In his rookie year of 2015, Lockett was a Pro Bowler and a first-team All-Pro — as a returner. He later had four straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons, and he finished his stint in Seattle with 661 catches for 8,594 yards and 61 touchdowns. As Schneider said, Lockett was underrated. He didn't try to bring attention to himself. He went about his job quietly and consistently. Folks like that don't get the notice they deserve, because there's always someone flapping their arms and tooting their own horn to take the focus away from the people who become the backbone of an organization. Like Lockett was in Seattle, for a decade.

Seahawks listening to DK Metcalf trade offers, but deal not guaranteed, GM says
The Seahawks are entertaining trade offers for DK Metcalf, but it's possible the star receiver plays out the final year of his contract in Seattle in 2025, general manager John Schneider said Thursday afternoon. 'We're talking to a ton of teams, taking offers, seeing what that looks like,' Schneider said on his weekly KIRO-AM radio show, a day after news of Metcalf's trade request emerged. Advertisement Schneider said Seattle's priority is 'doing what's absolutely best for the organization' and then the team will consider what is best for Metcalf. 'Hopefully both those things merge and it's an ideal situation,' he added. 'Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. Hopefully in this situation it does, and that would be great. But worst-case scenario, we have an amazing, explosive, powerful athlete playing receiver for us again in 2025. So, we'll see where this goes.' GO DEEPER Evaluating DK Metcalf trade proposals: Could the Seahawks WR reunite with Pete Carroll? The Seahawks are seeking a first- and third-round pick in exchange for the 27-year-old Metcalf, The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported Thursday, and Metcalf is eyeing a new contract worth around $30 million per year. Metcalf has a $31.9 million cap hit — highest among NFL wideouts — in 2025, the final year of a three-year, $72 million contract. The NFL Draft, which begins April 24, is the Seahawks' deadline for getting a deal done, Schneider said. Asked about the receiver potentially being disgruntled if a trade is not completed, Schneider described Metcalf as a 'very good communicator' who 'understands the business.' He added: 'He understands we're going to head down this road, we're going to do the best thing we can for the organization, and if things don't fall the way he wants, there's a good chance he could end up being here. And at that point, we all turn the corner and move forward. Through this whole process, he's been extremely professional and respectful.' The news of Metcalf's trade request leaked Wednesday afternoon, shortly after Seattle released receiver Tyler Lockett as a cap-saving measure. The team purposely released its longest-tenured player one day after its four other cap-related cuts to highlight what he has meant to the Seahawks in the last decade. Schneider said Thursday that the timing of the Metcalf news was 'probably not intentional' but he was still 'very disappointed' that it overshadowed Lockett's release. Advertisement 'We wanted this to be a very special day,' Schneider said. 'We wanted it to be Tyler Lockett Day.' Seattle's decision to handle Lockett's release in a 'classy' manner was spurred by not operating that way in the past with other franchise icons who were released in the name of finances. In March 2022, Bobby Wagner called out the organization for not informing him of their plans to move on from him. Wagner, who acts as his own agent, found out from another source before his release. 'We all were very excited to have this really nice day for Tyler to celebrate Tyler,' Schneider said. 'I felt bad for Tyler. The TV was all about DK instead of Tyler Lockett.'

Seahawks, Chargers are co-favorites for D.K. Metcalf
Wednesday's flurry of news included the fact that receiver D.K. Metcalf wants to fly the coop in Seattle. So where will he land? Currently, DraftKings has the Seahawks and the Chargers as +300 co-favorites for Metcalf. The Patriots aren't far behind, at +350. The Texans are fourth at +550, followed by the Raiders at +700 and the Steelers and Broncos at 12-1. It's surprising the Seahawks have such low odds. Given the way word surfaced — with the Metcalf news landing at a time when the Seahawks were trying to give receiver Tyler Lockett a proper sendoff — the Seahawks reportedly are salty. The current momentum points toward a divorce. What'll it take? As explained on Wednesday, while 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel isn't looking for a new deal on his way through the door in Washington (the trade becomes official on Wednesday), Metcalf is. Dianna Russini of reports that he's looking for $30 million per year, and that the Seahawks want a first- and third-round pick. That's what the Eagles gave the Titans for receiver A.J. Brown (Metcalf's Ole Miss teammate) three years ago. Metcalf's next team will have to strike the right balance between paying the player and satisfying his current team. The more money they give Metcalf, the less capital they'll want to sent to Seattle. And vice-versa. It becomes a thee-way negotiation, that requires two needles to be threaded by his next team. Still, the overall circumstances (capped by the news of Metcalf wanting out becoming the turd in the punch bowl of what should have been Tyler Lockett Day) suggest that this thing could move, quickly. And that, come next Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. ET, Metcalf could indeed officially be on a new team.
