Wright rallies as Aussie surfers advance at J-Bay
Tyler Wright has produced a clutch effort to join top-ranked Molly Picklum and Isabella Nichols in the quarter-finals of the World Surf League event at Jeffreys Bay. Fellow Australians Jack Robinson and Ethan Ewing also had a good Saturday as they advanced to the men's round of 16. As the 10th and penultimate stop of the WSL regular season, there is plenty on the line in the Corona Cero Open J-Bay for surfers battling to be ranked in the top five who get the chance to compete for the world titles at Cloudbreak in Fiji. Two-time world champion Wright was trailing Canadian rookie Erin Brooks in their elimination round heat on Saturday but took a medium-sized wave and surfed it all the way down the point to score a 7.07 and win 12.57 to 12.44. Sitting seventh in the rankings, Wright next faces Hawaii's second-ranked Gabriela Bryan in the quarter-finals. Already qualified for the Finals in Fiji after her opening heat win on Friday, Picklum will take on No.8 Lakey Peterson and fifth-ranked Nichols will meet No.4 Bettylou Sakura Johnson. After winning his opening heat, fifth-ranked Ewing will come up against American Jake Marshall in his round of 16 match up. Seventh-ranked Robinson also won in the opening round, posting a 14.83 score, and will come up against Italy's Leonardo Fioravanti.

Cardrona Drops In On Bondi As Thinkerbell Launches First Work For RealNZ
New Zealand's Cardrona Alpine Resort and Treble Cone hit Bondi Beach last week, inviting surfers to trade the sand for snow in a one-morning-only Board Swap - the first piece of work from RealNZ and its newly appointed earned agency, Thinkerbell. The activation landed after the highly anticipated opening of Cardrona's 2025 winter season and the launch of Soho Basin: a 150-hectare terrain expansion, and the resort's biggest milestone in over a decade. With fresh ground to explore, it was the perfect moment to tempt Aussies off the sand and onto the slopes. From first light, a crew of surfers - joined by Aussie pro, Olympian and two-time world champ Tyler Wright - were offered snowboards and lift passes in exchange for surfboards and the chance to win three-day passes to Cardrona or Treble Cone. Each swapped board was donated to the Bondi Surf Club. The work marks the start of Thinkerbell's remit as RealNZ's earned agency of record across New Zealand and Australia. RealNZ is New Zealand's leading tourism and conservation operator, offering some of the South Island's most iconic experiences - including Walter Peak High Country Farm, Pātea Doubtful Sound, Piopiotahi Milford Sound, Cardrona Alpine Resort, and Treble Cone - all part of a broader mission to help people fall in love with conservation. Jessica Allison, General Manager at Thinkerbell Aotearoa says, 'Board Swap is a brilliant expression of what this collaboration is all about: using creative earned ideas to bring RealNZ's story to unexpected places. Landing snowboards at Bondi is attention-grabbing, but it also captures something deeper: the thrill of discovery, and the invitation to experience Aotearoa's wild side. We're proud to kick things off with work that's as imaginative as it is purposeful.' Alesha Stefanissin, General Manager of Marketing at RealNZ says, 'This work is a bold start to our partnership with Thinkerbell. We've got world-class experiences and a big story to tell. Thinkerbell brings the energy, creativity and reach to help us do that across both sides of the Tasman.'

Molly Picklum back in World Surf League yellow jersey as race to world title ramps Up
Australian surf star Molly Picklum is the world No.1 again after ramping up her bid for a maiden world title in Brazil. Picklum, 22, will take the yellow jersey to the next event on the World Surf League calendar at J-Bay in South Africa after advancing to the semi-finals in Brazil. The heat is rising in the race for a spot in the final five who will contest the one-day world title event and Picklum is as well placed as she could be. 'That's the best news ever,' Picklum said. 'I feel like, for me, I got the yellow jersey early on in the year for the past few years. I obviously heard all the talk of all the girls that I'm right at the top with getting knocked out, and it's obviously a great opportunity for me. 'I felt all that for sure, but ultimately, I was just using it for good and to fire me up. I'm so happy, that's sick, especially towards the end of the year. 'I want to keep pushing for sure.' Isabella Nichols is the only other Australian woman in the top five, for now, after two-time world champion Tyler Wright dropped to seventh following her quarter-final loss in Brazil. Ethan Ewing is the only Australian man in the top five, with Jack Robinson falling to number six after failing to progress beyond the elimination rounds in Brazil.

Picklum gets golden chance as top surfers tumble
Australian surfers are off to a patchy start at the Rio Pro, however Molly Picklum has the chance to take over the rankings lead after some major upsets in the women's field. World No.3 Picklum, who finished runner-up at the World Surf League's last tour stop in California, advanced directly through to the quarter-finals with an opening heat win at Brazil's Praia de Itauna break on Sunday. Picklum had the highest scoring ride of the day in the women's field, picking up a 7.83 in her two-wave tally of 13.50 to down 2023 world champion Caroline Marks (9.60) and local hope Luana Silva (6.30). But fellow Australians Tyler Wright and fifth-ranked Isabella Nichols went into sudden death with only two-time world champion Wright surviving after eliminating Hawaiian Bettylou Sakura Johnson, who won at Lower Trestles. In a huge upset Peru's Arena Rodriguez, in her Championship Tour debut, ousted Hawaii's rankings leader Gabriela Bryan while Silva also took down American world No.2 Caitlin Simmers in the elimination round. In the live rankings Picklum has moved up to second and is just 505 points behind Ryan. The Australian is also the only woman of the five to not win an event so far this season but has a golden chance in Brazil, next taking on Rodriguez. One huge turn and a whole lot of commitment!Quarters bound for Molly Picklum as a result.📺 @vivobr #RioPro is LIVE | @corona — World Surf League (@wsl) June 22, 2025 "I woke up this morning feeling a little foggy, so I was just really happy to make my waves and work with the swell here," Picklum said. "Brazil's definitely one I want to win - I love the energy here and I have so many good friends here, and it's definitely something I would love to win. "This year, I've made a couple of finals, but unfortunately, haven't got the win. "I just keep knocking on the door, you know, just keep showing up, and let's see if I can try and crack it and take home the trophy." On the men's side of the draw Sydney rookie Joel Vaughan, competing on his first year on tour, scored 13.33 for a rousing win over Japan's third-ranked Kanoa Igarashi (6.34) and Brazilan Alejo Muniz (4.97). Vaughan previously earned a perfect 10-point ride during the Challenger Series event in Brazil. "It feels awesome to be back," the 21-year-old said. "I've tried to just keep it pretty simple and work on myself and try to get some good waves and yeah, stoked to make that one." But Australia's Olympic duo, silver medal-winning Jack Robinson and Ethan Ewing must contest the elimination round. Robinson will take on Indonesian star Rio Waida while Ewing has drawn exciting young Frenchman Marco Mignot. With two more competitions before the Finals-bound top five head to Cloudbreak in Fiji to decide the world champion, Ewing is ranked six and Robinson seven.

Sally Fitzgibbons defeated at Margaret River Pro by Gabriela Bryan
Sally Fitzgibbons has suffered heartbreak at the Margaret River Pro, losing her round-of-16 match-up in the final seconds, a result which has massive ramifications for the 34-year-old. Fitzgibbons needed to defeat world number one Gabriela Bryan to not only advance to the quarterfinals in WA, but also to avoid the top-10 mid-season cut for the third successive year. Fitzgibbons opened their heat by attacking a wave to earn a 6.83, and with Bryan uncharacteristically falling off a few waves, the 34-year-old NSW surfer looked in control. She bettered her back-up score with a nervous 4.33, leaving Bryan requiring a 7.33 score to reach the quarterfinals. But with 90 seconds remaining, the Hawaiian launched onto a wave and showed off her power moves in a two-turn combination, wowing the judges to score a 9.00 to take out the heat. Victory would also secure 14th-ranked Fitzgibbons a place on the 2026 Championship Tour after the WSL announced a larger women's field next year. Fitzgibbons could have qualified for next year's Championship Tour if fellow Aussie Tyler Wright could defeat Californian Lakey Peterson. But Wright also fell short in her round-of-16 battle, meaning Peterson qualified for the Champions Tour and sending Fitzgibbons back to the Challenger Series. An emotional Fitzgibbons stayed out in the water, devastated to have let the win — and the opportunities it secured — slip away. "I think for the first, like, 98 per cent of that heat it was all going against me, I could not get it together," Bryan said. "I'm like, I just need to do two big turns, and I hit the first one as hard as I could and then I was like, OK, just finish this thing, and it all worked out, so I was so stoked that wave came." Molly Picklum, Isabella Nichols and local wildcard Bronte Macaulay all won their match-ups on Monday. Picklum, who would have taken over the yellow rankings leader jersey if Bryan had bowed out, downed American teen Bella Kenworthy, while Macaulay secured a late wave to eliminate 2023 world champion and Olympic gold medallist Caroline Marks. The pair will meet in the quarter-finals, while the in-form Nichols, who beat France's Vahine Fierro, faces Peterson. The men's quarter-finals are next into the water, with local qualifier Jacob Willcox the sole Australian. AAP/ABC
