Man leads Corinth police on a pursuit in stolen car
CORINTH – An attempt on Thursday to pull over a car believed to have been stolen the night before led to a pursuit through Corinth and a juvenile male accidentally shooting himself in the leg.
Two Corinth police officers spotted a car around 8:30 a.m. that had been reported stolen from 9th Street the previous night. When police attempted to pull the car over in the Waldron Street area, the driver sped away.
At one point during the pursuit, the driver slowed enough that a female suspect jumped out of the back seat and ran away from the car, which promptly sped away again.
The pursuit finally ended in the Horton Circle area when the driver stopped. Officers conducted a felony traffic stop, ordering the occupants out of the vehicle one at a time. When a juvenile passenger was exiting the vehicle, police said he 'appeared to reach for his waistline area and discharged a pistol, shooting himself in the leg.'
The juvenile was carried to the hospital for medical treatment. The pistol the juvenile was holding had been reported stolen in a July 2 car burglary in Corinth.
The driver, Tyrese Stephon Irons, 20, of Penn Street, Corinth, was taken into custody at the scene and charged with felony fleeing and grand larceny - felony taking of a motor vehicle.
