Duke Responds to NBA Reunion Featuring Cooper Flagg
Duke Responds to NBA Reunion Featuring Cooper Flagg originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Duke was expected by many to win last season's men's NCAA championship thanks to the ultra-talented roster it possessed, although it ultimately lost in the Final Four round. That roster boasted the likes of big man Khaman Maluach, sharpshooter Kon Knueppel, guard Tyrese Proctor and, of course, 6-foot-9 sensation Cooper Flagg. Advertisement All four are now on NBA rosters after being taken in the draft a few weeks ago. Flagg was the No. 1 pick by the Dallas Mavericks, Knueppel went to the Charlotte Hornets at No. 4 and Maluach headed to the Phoenix Suns after being chosen with the No. 10 selection. Proctor ended up as a second-round draft pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Flagg, Proctor and Maluach did a rookie photo shoot together, and it was a bit of a reunion for them. Resharing the NBA's post through their social media handle, Duke Men's Basketball wrote, "you see it." Proctor, who is originally from Australia, averaged 12.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists a game and shot 40.5% from 3-point range this past season. Maluach, who was born in South Sudan and grew up in Uganda, averaged 8.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks a game while making 71.2% of his field-goal attempts last season. Advertisement At 7-foot-2 and 250 pounds, Maluach is thought to have some serious potential at the next level as a defensive center. Flagg is expected by many to become a legitimate star, and he will have the opportunity to do so on a Mavericks team that has plenty of talent and will likely aim for the playoffs next spring. Despite losing so many talented players, Duke has had a whale of a recruiting offseason. It has gotten commitments from five-star prospects Cameron Boozer and Dame Sarr, as well as Cayden Boozer, who is also a five-star recruit out of Miami. Report: 49th pick Tyrese Proctor inks 4-year, $8.69M contract with Cavaliers
Former Duke guard Tyrese Proctor, the No. 49 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft, signed a multiyear contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday, the team announced. Proctor was a third-team All-ACC selection last season, averaging 12.4 points, three rebounds and 2.2 assists on 40.5% shooting from 3-point range in 38 games as a junior. He led the Blue Devils with 89 3-pointers, ranking third in the conference. Advertisement The 6-foot-5 Australian reportedly agreed to a four-year, $8.69 million contract, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. The first two years are guaranteed on the contract, which includes a significant guarantee in the third year and a team option in the fourth year. Proctor finished in double figures 26 times last season, including four 20-point performances. He produced a season-high 25 points and two assists on March 23 in a win over Baylor in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The 21-year-old helped Duke qualify for the NCAA Tournament each year while with the program, including a run to the Final Four this year. He established himself as an impact player at both ends of the court, traits that stood out to the Cavaliers in the draft. Advertisement Proctor is expected to suit up with the Cavaliers for at least five games in the NBA Summer League, beginning on July 10 against the Indiana Pacers (5 p.m. EDT, NBA TV). Tyrese Proctor to Cavaliers in NBA draft: Instant grade, analysis, stats for 49th pick
The Cleveland Cavaliers hope they added some needed shooting and backcourt depth by drafting Tyrese Proctor of Duke in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft on June 26. The 49th overall pick of the draft, Proctor scored more than 1,100 points in three seasons with the Blue Devils. The 6-foot-4¼ guard averaged 12.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game this past season as a junior. Advertisement Proctor delivered two huge performances in Duke's first two games of the NCAA Tournament. He scored 25 points, making seven 3-pointers, in a second-round win over Baylor after draining six 3s and scoring 19 points in a first-round rout of Mount St. Mary's. Mandatory Credit: Zachary Taft-Imagn Images Tyrese Proctor to Cavs in 2025 NBA draft grade: Instant reaction Grade: B Why: With it unclear that the Cavs can hang on to backup guards Ty Jerome and Sam Merrill, who are each free agents, Proctor provides the Cavs some insurance at the position. Proctor showed he can be knockdown shooter from 3-point range in his final season at Duke, hitting 40.5% of his 3s. He also proved to be a strong on-ball defender in college. He'll need to get stronger to defend in the NBA, but he has the length needed to become a good defensive player at this level. Combine that with his shooting, and he's got the ability to become a solid addition to the Cavs' rotation. And that's all a contending team can ask for out of a second-round pick this deep in the draft. Who did the Cavs draft? Cavaliers provide scouting reports on Tyrese Proctor, Saliou Niang
The Cavaliers left the 2025 NBA Draft on June 26 with two players, second-round picks Tyrese Proctor and Saliou Niang. A 6-foot-4¼, 183-pound guard, Proctor spent the past three seasons playing for Duke. A 6-7, 204-pound wing, Niang played for Trento in Italy the last two seasons. They are both 21 years old. Advertisement Cavs general manager Mike Gansey broke down the team's assessments of Proctor, the 49th overall pick, and Niang, the 58th overall selection. Projected to be a second-apron team, the Cavs have limited financial flexibility and two guards headed for unrestricted free agency, Ty Jerome and Sam Merrill. Cavs in 2025 NBA Draft: Cavaliers pick Tyrese Proctor at No. 49 overall. What to know Gansey said the Cavs had Proctor "almost as a first-round grade" when they evaluated him in the buildup to the draft. Advertisement "At Duke, everyone's seen him play," Gansey said of Proctor. "He had a great year this year going to Final Four, and he got a lot better, 40% from 3, and we're excited about him because he's coming from a winning program. Jon Scheyer is a very good coach, and he's obviously learned with him. "The thing that attracted us was he can play on and off the ball. He's got great size at 6-5, can play some combo and on top of the 40% shooting, he comes from a winning pedigree, especially this year. I think he was the fifth Duke player drafted. So basically their whole starting five was drafted, and he can fill a role." Tyrese Proctor to Cavs in NBA draft: Instant grade, analysis, stats for 49th pick Gansey identified Proctor's shooting as his most NBA-ready skill. But Gansey added, "You can't have enough ball handlers. ... You can run him off screens. He can play pick-and-roll. He can get in the paint. He's got a good midrange game. He makes plays for others." Scouting report on Cavs draft pick Saliou Niang Gansey said the Cavs will keep Niang overseas "for at least a year, if not more." A native of Senegal, Niang will stay in Italy and play for Virtus Bologna, a EuroLeague team, Gansey said. Advertisement "The last two years, the strides he's made have been pretty incredible," Gansey said. "Super athletic, 6-7, really long, can really guard. He was just the NBA Eurocamp Defensive Player of the Year. So he's really good on the defensive side of the ball, his versatility there. He can slash, a good cutter, a good finisher around the rim, but he's really got to improve his 3-point shooting. He's not a great shooter right now, but it's improving." Who did Cavs pick in NBA draft?: Cavaliers take Saliou Niang at No. 58 overall Saliou Niang stats in Italy Niang started 10 of the 29 games in which he appeared last season with Trento in the Lega Basket Serie A.
