2025 Jacksonville Jaguars' roster preview: CB Montaric Brown
With offseason programs now behind us, we will be getting a jump start on our training camp preview by going player-by-player through the Jacksonville Jaguars' 91-man roster. Going alphabetically, up is cornerback Montaric Brown. Advertisement Montaric Brown's profile Height: 6-0 Weight: 190 Age: 25 NFL experience: 3 seasons College: Arkansas No. 30 2024 Snap count totals Defense: 855 Special teams: 149 2024 PFF grades Defense: 62.2 Special teams: 51.2 2024 Season Review Brown appeared in all 17 games defensively last season, which included making 10 starts. While he allowed a completion rate of 70%, Brown did hold opponents to just 11.3 yards per catch, limiting YAC with his steady tackling abilities. He also had one interception and five pass breakups. Looking ahead to the 2025 season Brown is competing with Jarrian Jones and Travis Hunter for the starting outside cornerback role opposite of Tyson Campbell. From the sounds of it, Brown has the early advantage in this battle, with ESPN's Michael DiRocco reporting that he was working with the first team defense throughout OTAs and minicamp. Advertisement In Anthony Campanile's vision-based and zone-heavy defensive scheme, there were a number of practices where we heard about Brown getting his hands on the ball while in coverage. By all accounts, Brown has acclimated himself well so far to this new system. "That's who he's been every day that I've been here," Anthony Campanile said of Brown's ball production. "And I can only go by what I see every day that I'm out here, he competes. He loves to compete. "Same thing like Tyson, whether it's on the line of scrimmage, he's not afraid to challenge people. To challenge people at the top of the route and play with technique, but whatever he's gotta do to strain and make the play, he's been doing that, which is awesome. Jaguars' CB Tyson Campbell Facing Career Crossroads originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Jacksonville Jaguars ended the 2024 NFL regular season with a disappointing 4-13 record. They'll be hoping to bounce back in the upcoming season with Trevor Lawrence leading the pack. Advertisement However, the Jaguars' quarterback is not the Pro Football Focus' (PFF) pick for Jacksonville's make-or-break player for the 2025 season. Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell (3)Corey Perrine/Florida Times-Union PFF's Dalton Wasserman has handed that tag to 25-year-old cornerback Tyson Campbell instead. "Campbell is entering the first season of a four-year contract extension that pays him an annual average of more than $19 million. However, Campbell needs to return to the 2022 form that led to an excellent 80.7 PFF coverage grade in order to justify it," he wrote. "Over the past two seasons, he has recorded a far more mediocre 60.3 PFF coverage grade. Campbell isn't leaving Jacksonville anytime soon, but the defense needs him to play like a star this year after ranking 25th in the NFL in team PFF coverage grade last season." Advertisement The Jaguars drafted Tyson Campbell as the 33rd overall pick in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He started 15 games that season, recording 49 solo tackles and two interceptions after a slow start. The Georgia Bulldogs product followed it up with 55 solo tackles and three interceptions the following season. He made his first postseason appearance that season. After an impressive 2022-23 season, Campbell was sidelined for a total of six weeks due to a hamstring and quadriceps injury the next year. The Jaguars handed him a four-year, $76.5 million extension last offseason. Campbell suffered another hamstring injury in the Week 1 contest against the Miami Dolphins and had to sit out for five weeks. He played 12 games last season and charted 42 solo tackles, matching his tally from the previous season. Advertisement The Jaguars would hope to see a healthier and more reliable Campbell in the upcoming season to boost their chances for a deep run into the postseason. The veteran CB has looked in great shape this offseason. The Jaguars' defensive coordinator, Anthony Campanile, heaped praise on Campbell after day 2 of the mandatory minicamp on June 12, saying, "I am really, really fired up about everything he's done this offseason because he's competed so hard in the practices. He's fighting for every rep, whether it's at the top of the route, on the line of scrimmage, in the break area." The Jaguars' star needs to replicate his offseason performance on the gridiron when he suits up for his fifth NFL season. Jacksonville must make massive defensive improvements if it wants to clinch the AFC South, and Campbell will play a key role in this effort. Jaguars WR Brian Thomas Jr. 'fine' after injury scare
June 11 - Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. is "fine" after he absorbed a hard fall during practice at minicamp, head coach Liam Coen said Wednesday. Thomas appeared to injure his shoulder following a collision with cornerback Tyson Campbell during team drills. Thomas exited the field with trainers before returning to the sideline, however he did not go back into practice. "He's fine. He absolutely could've gone back and played -- just bruised it a little bit," Coen said. "Said he had great range of motion, strength. He's all good. No issues, just precautionary. "(If) he didn't come back out, he'd be really hurt. He was completely cleared to play." Thomas, 22, recorded 87 catches for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns in 17 games (16 starts) in his rookie season last year. He was selected by the Jaguars with the 23rd overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft. --Field Level Media

Can Caleb Ransaw make the transition to Safety?
The Jacksonville Jaguars have invested a ton of assets into their secondary. From Tyson Campbell's extension, selection of Travis Hunter, signing of Jourdan Lewis and Eric Murray, the Jaguars have made it known through their actions that the secondary needed some work, a lot of work. Advertisement The Jags' secondary ranked last in nearly every statistical category so the viewpoint is certainly warranted. >>> STREAM ACTION SPORTS JAX 24/7 LIVE <<< Rookie nickel Jarrian Jones was about the unit's only saving grace as Tyson Campbell and company struggled in the man-heavy scheme under Ryan Nielsen. In the draft, James Gladstone traded up to select the unicorn himself, Travis Hunter, who figures to play both ways in Jacksonville. However, it was their third round selection of Caleb Ransaw that puzzled many initially but the vision was there. Ransaw, largely a nickel cornerback at Tulane, plays with physicality and toughness. He led all FBS cornerbacks in 2023 with a missed tackle rate of just 1.8%. His career missed tackle rate of 5.4% is top tier for any cornerback. Advertisement It's for these reasons and his skills in zone coverage that have the Jaguars intrigued with Ransaw at the safety position. The Jaguars cornerback room is pretty full with Campbell, Jones, Lewis, Hunter, and Montaric Brown, however, there is a path for Ransaw to become one of the Jaguars' starting safeties in the future. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] On top of his physicality and tackling prowess, Ransaw is an incredible athlete, posting a 9.75 RAS. His 4.33 40-yard dash is among the fastest ever if graded out as a safety. In fact, he would be the second fastest safety ever. Ransaw is pretty dang good in coverage too. Advertisement Last season, Ransaw allowed just a 43.5% completion rate, his best season in coverage. Much of his time in college came at nickel, 766 snaps to be exact. It's generally a much easier transition to safety than say outside cornerback. While he's been solid overall in coverage, I mentioned his skills in zone. Last season, Ransaw allowed just three receptions on nine targets for 45 yards. It wasn't as though he didn't see a lot of play in zone, Ransaw was just rarely targeted. The Jaguars have flexibility needed to develop and mold Ransaw into the player that they envision. He doesn't need to start or even play right away as there are other players who can fill in the short term. Advertisement The hope is, with Ransaw's physicality, athleticism, and coverage skills, that he can develop into a starting safety for the Jaguars down the line and eventually replace or complement Eric Murray. Jaguars fans will have to be patient with Ransaw but the reward might just be worth all the risk. Jaguars NFL combine results: Fastest cornerback prospects in 40 yard dash Which cornerbacks ran the fastest 40-yard dash times at the 2025 NFL combine? This is, of course, a big position of need for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Not only at cornerback, but the Jaguars' pass defense as a whole last season ranked as one of the worst in football in many key categories. According to Pro Football Reference, the Jaguars ranked 24th in completion rate and in the bottom three in passer rating, interceptions, and yards per pass attempt allowed--giving up way too many explosive plays through the air. What the Jaguars will have to find this offseason, whether that be in free agency or the draft, is a starting cornerback to line up opposite of Tyson Campbell. Recently, GM James Gladstone highlighted what kinds of players the Jaguars will be looking for: 'We will prioritize people and players that are intangibly rich,' Gladstone said. 'By doing so, they will elevate our ecosystem, our team, by being nothing more than themselves. It's as simple as that.' 'On the field, we're looking for competitiveness, toughness, and football instincts. Off the field, you're looking for people that elevate those around them and are passionate about the sport of football. So it's really not all that complex, but it's something that we're just simply going to prioritize and be disciplined in our approach.'
