Singapore's Under-16 Boys are geared up to compete in the Lion City Cup
Photo: Instagram/fasingapore Singapore's U-16 Boys football team is geared up and ready for the return of the Lion City Cup at Jalan Besar Stadium. The young athletes are eager to showcase their skills as the future of local football. The team's head coach, Ashraf Ariffin, together with forward Izzan Farid, shared their optimism about the competition. Coach Ashraf described how the team prepared through a productive nine-day training camp in Thailand from June 21-29. He said: 'I think our nine days in Thailand were very good, they served an important purpose for us… The team bonded very well, and we managed to work on a lot of major things that we feel will be important heading into this tournament.' He added: 'Although we had a short window to prepare, I think the outcome at the end of the training camp was very positive.' The training camp played a crucial role in finalising the team roster. To finalise the squad, a bigger group of athletes travelled to Thailand, where 34 players competed in six matches over three days. This process aimed at challenging the athletes and selecting those who were most prepared to compete internationally. The head coach recalled: 'In Thailand, everybody competed for their places. We played six games in nine days, so everyone had plenty of game time to prove themselves… We had a headache at the end of the camp to select the best 25 — but that's the kind of headache we want. It means we have talent out there.' For Izzan, representing Singapore is an opportunity that he and the rest of the team wanted to seize with all their hearts. The athlete stated: 'I want to see all my teammates fight for each other — to win every tackle, header and challenge. That mentality is important if we want to compete and get a good result.' Competition aside, Ashraf is more focused on the growth of the team. He believes that the Lion City Cup is not only a competition, but a chance for each athlete to prove themselves. 'My expectation is simple: to see the team grow and individuals develop… At the end of the day, the big picture is for them to become future national players. And for that, they need more international games like this,' Ashraf said. Want to be part of the crowd? Grab your Lion City Cup tickets on Ticketek . India vs Pakistan on a cricket field for first time since Operation Sindoor
India and Pakistan are set to meet for the first time since Operation Sindoor. The teams, which include several veterans from both countries, are set to face off in the World Championship of Legends, an exhibition tournament in the United match, which takes place on July 20 in Edgbaston, will see the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, and Irfan Pathan take part from the Indian team. The India vs Pakistan match will also have the presence of Shahid Afridi from the Pakistan side, who in recent past has made several controversial statements about India. Afridi has been criticised several times on social media for hatemongering against his neighbouring Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria had ripped into Shahid Afridi for his bizarre claims against India in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack. On April 28, Kaneria criticised Afridi for his statements on the incident, where the former captain had claimed that India facilitated the attack on themselves and then blamed Pakistan. Shahid Afridi's statement had gone viral on social media, where he had made weird remarks on the terror attack that claimed 26 innocent lives."The terrorists continued to kill people in Pahalgam for an hour, and not a single Indian soldier out of 8 lakh showed up. But when they did, they blamed Pakistan," Afridi told local reporters in Pakistan."India carries out terrorism itself, kills its own people, and then puts the blame on Pakistan," he former captain of the Pakistan cricket team further vouched for the country and stated that they have always wanted peace with their neighbours."No country or religion supports terrorism. We always support peace. Islam teaches us peace only, and Pakistan never supports such kinds of acts. We have always tried to improve our relations with India.""We received so many threats before travelling to India. During the 2016 T20 World Cup, I was the captain, and I had no clue whether we would go or not. Sports diplomacy is also good. They send their kabaddi team here, but they can't send their cricket team. If you want to shut it down, then do it completely, or let sport," Afridi vs Pakistan post Operation SindoorThis is not the first time that India and Pakistan have participated against each other in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. Controversy had erupted in the Junior Davis Cup on May 24, after India had beaten Pakistan in the U16 a viral clip, a Pakistan player was seen shaking hands in an unsportsmanlike manner with an Indian player. After Pakistan's loss in the tie, the Pakistani U16 player in question appeared to take a swipe at the Indian junior star. Initially failing to connect in the handshake, he repeated the action—this time making contact—only to abruptly shake off the Indian player's hand in a disrespectful gesture.- EndsMust Watch
