Indian Wrestlers Yet To Get Appointment For Visas Ahead Of U17 World Championships

Last Updated: Indian wrestlers are struggling for visas to Greece for U17 World Championships starting July 28. The problems for Indian wrestling don't seem to end as a bunch of teenage grapplers are struggling for visas to fly to Greece for the U17 World Championships, with just four days left for the scheduled departure for the tournament, which is set to start on July 28, according to a report in PTI. The Wrestling Federation of India had sought appointment on July 10, but 12 days have passed and it has yet to hear a positive response from the Greek embassy. When nothing moved even six days after their request, the federation wrote to the Ministry of External Affairs on July 16, seeking intervention. The 47-member Indian contingent has 30 wrestlers, who made the national team after coming through selection trials conducted by the federation on July 7 and 8 in Delhi and Lucknow, respectively. 'The Federation had to seek intervention of the MEA and the Home Ministry after its numerous requests didn't receive a positive response from the Greek embassy," WFI President Sanjay Singh told PTI. 'The tickets have been booked and the players are ready. The exposure for young athletes is paramount for their growth. They must not miss the World Championship. It's Tuesday today. Let's hope we get a response now," Sanjay added. The Indian team has multiple Asian Championship gold medallists in the squad, including Rachna Parmar (43kg), Moni (57kg), Ashvini Vaishno (65kg) and Manisha (69kg), and they will be strong medal contenders in Athens. Even the world governing body, United World Wrestling president Nenad Lalovic, has shot a missive to the Hellenic Olympic Committee, urging urgent intervention in the matter. 'Unfortunately, some of the qualified and registered teams, including the Iranian and Indian delegations, have encountered difficulties and delays in obtaining their Schengen visas," Lalovic wrote on Sunday, July 20. 'Despite having followed the application procedures correctly, these teams have not yet received their visas. I would therefore be most grateful for your support in facilitating this process with the relevant authorities, to ensure that all participating athletes and officials can obtain their visas in time," the letter read. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Indian sports wrap, July 7: India picks six Asian Championship medallists for U17 World Championships selection trials

WRESTLING Six Asian Championship medallists win selection trials for U17 World Championships The Indian team picked for the Under-17 World Championship did not have many surprises, with as many as six medal winners from the recent Asian Championships acing the selection trials to make the national team on Monday. The Wresting Federation of India (WFI) had restricted the trials to medal winners at the recent U17 National Championship, thus only the best wrestlers in each of the 10 categories competed, limiting the number of bouts. Haryana's Rachna Parmar (43kg), Delhi's Moni (57kg), Rajasthan's Ashvini Vaishno (65kg), and Haryana's Manisha (69kg), who won gold medals at the Asian Championships in Vietnam, emerged winners in their respective categories. Rachna got the better of Cheshta 3-0 in the final. After losing a point on passivity, Cheshta tried the 'dhobi pachad' at least twice but lost a point on counterattack as Rachna managed to take her down on one of the moves to come out a clean winner. Cheshta had also won a medal at the Asian Championship—a silver in 40 kg—but she chose to compete in 43kg on Monday. The 65kg and 69kg weight class featured only two wrestlers each. Ashvini beating Haryana's Taniya 2-0 in 65kg and Manisha pinning Delhi Bharti after taking a comfortable 4-0 lead. Anshika Yadav from UP missed out on competing in 69kg after the officials stopped her weigh-in because her passport is expiring in December this year, and a six-month validity is a must for visa application. 'Even if she had won, she would not have travelled, so what's the point in her competing? It's unfortunate that she could not compete,' said an official. 'Today is the last day to send entries through UWW's software and we couldn't have sent her name even if she got her passport renewed through Tatkal.' Uttar Pradesh's Preeti (40kg), Kasish (46kg), Komal (49kg), Yashita (61 kg), and Kajal (73kg) were the other trial winners. Komal defeated Asia Championship bronze winner Anjali after erasing a 0-2 deficit. Anjali went up 2-0 with a takedown and maintained the lead till the break. In the second period, Komal was put on the clock, and she responded with a quick two-point move. She effected another takedowntowards the end to earn her spot on the Indian team. Incidentally, Kajal was the lone wrestler in the 73kg weight class. -Press Trust of India FOOTBALL Kerala Blasters announces new signing Brahmacharimayum Sumit Sharma signs for Kerala Blasters. | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement Indian Super League team Kerala Blasters on Monday announced the signing of young defender Brahmacharimayum Sumit Sharma. Kitchener Rangers sign Adam Valentini to the team

Adam Valentini signs on with the Kitchener Rangers on May 5, 2025. The Kitchener Rangers have added a new player to their roster. Adam Valentini, a 17-year-old forward from the Toronto area, officially signed with the team on Thursday. He just finished a season with the Chicago Steel, part of the United States Hockey League (USHL). Valentini also played with Canada White at the U17 World Hockey Championships where he racked up four goals and five assists in nine games. 'With his skill, hockey sense and offensive creativity we expect him to make an immediate impact with our team,' Mike McKenzie, general manager for the Rangers, said in a media release. 'He has always been a top tier player in his age group and when his rights became available last summer, we knew we had to do our best to acquire him and try to get him to Kitchener.' The Rangers acquired those rights after a trade last September with the Brampton Steelheads. The deal was sealed thanks to a recent rule change. Players with the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) are eligible, as of Aug. 1, to take part in NCAA hockey programs. 'That definitely opened up more options for me,' Valentini told CTV News. 'Kitchener is such a first-class organization. I think it's what suited me best. I want to play here and can't wait to get things going.' He said he was in the crowd when the Rangers took on the Windsor Spitfires in the OHL playoffs, and is looking forward to donning the red, blue and white. Valentini will be wearing number 92 when he reports to training camp in August.

Birmingham's Henry Aslikyan captures his third consecutive City Section title

Henry Aslikyan said "I'm just here to have fun" when talking about Saturday's City Section wrestling championships at Roybal Learning Center. And why not? It is always fun when you win. The Birmingham junior never displayed the slightest hint of concern, making it look easy with a pair of first-period pins, then a technical fall on the way to his third individual title and first in the 113-pound division. 'I had to get a little bigger since the lowest weight in college is 125,' Aslikyan said. 'I've been rolling on the mats since I was 4 but really started wrestling when I was 9. I did gymnastics before that.' Last summer in Amman, Jordan, he captured the bronze medal at the U17 World Championships and is already committed to Michigan. 'I like the coaches over there and I'll have some Cali boys on my team,' he said. His biggest adjustment may be the weather: 'It might get cold there.' Under the tutelage of his dad Meruj, who was a successful wrestler in Armenia, Aslikyan has high aspirations — namely another City title and two more state titles. No big deal. 'I'm on track for it... that's my goal,' the 17-year-old from Panorama City said. 'I'll try to be 126 [pounds] next year and I want to make the U20 team next year.' In Saturday's final round, Aslikyan built an 11-point lead in the first period against Matthew Gonzalez of San Fernando, then he added a few quick takedowns early in the second to win by technical fall, 20-3. After back-to-back titles at 106 pounds Aslikyan moved up one weight class this winter and he has been just as dominant, losing only once by close decision at the Doc B Invitational, a match he claims he has analyzed countless times and which he looks forward to avenging should he meet the same opponent Feb. 27-March 1 at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield. 'He's a great kid who's got an open mind for learning,' Patriots coach James Medeiros said. 'As good as he is, he's very coachable. He wants to improve his technique and he's always asking me questions.' As a sophomore, Aslikyan became the second City wrestler to win a state championship and he could make it three by the time he is done. Jonny Parada of San Fernando won the state 126-pound division as a junior in 2013 but came in fifth the following year. It is no secret that Aslikyan wants to graduate as the most accomplished male wrestler in City history — and he is well on his way. Should he win a fourth title, he would become only the sixth boy to accomplish that, joining San Fernando's Andy Moro (1996 to 1999), Raphael Reynolds (2002 to 2005), Mike Solis (2005 to 2008), Rashaad Reynolds (2006 to 2009) and Willie German (1999 to 2002), though none of them captured a state title. Aslikyan was one of nine Birmingham boys who made the finals in their division. Arno Vardanyan won at 126 after taking the 120-pound title a year ago, Arman Arutiunian won at 145, Gregory Torosian celebrated his birthday by capturing the 150-pound title (he won at 145 last year) and Slava Shahbazyan won on a first-period pin to take the 165-pound title. San Fernando's Johnny Alvarez beat Birmingham's Roman Arakelyan 15-0 in the 132-pound final and Lincoln McClenahan of Granada Hills got a reversal early in the third period and hung on to upset the Patriots' top-seeded Jessie Pena 4-3 at 138. Birmingham continued its dynasty under Medeiros, who has piloted the program since 2011-12. The boys made it seven City team titles in a row while racking up 280.5 points for a healthy margin over runner-up San Fernando (209.0). The Birmingham girls won their fourth straight team title with 256.0 points, with Banning (133.0) and Granada Hills (133.0) next. Senior Avy Perez needed 11 seconds to pin Eagle Rock's Cecile Ranciere and win the 105-pound girls division for her fourth City individual title. Several of her Birmingham teammates also won their weight classes. Marlene Garcia won at 100, Delilah Barragan won at 110, Diana Barone won on a 15-second pin at 135, Adelaida Fernandez won at 140 and Elizabeth Reyes upset Maya Magana of Granada Hills by fall at 155.
