Junior Springboks are in rude health

The Junior Springboks have shocked critics by powering into the U20 World Championship final against New Zealand. The South African national U20 men's team during a training session at SARU Fields in Stellenbosch. Picture: Ashley Vlotman / Gallo Images After their indifferent showing in the U20 Rugby Championship in Gqeberha a few weeks ago, there were concerns the Junior Springboks would struggle at what is effectively the U20 World Cup taking place in Italy. How wrong we were. Because this Junior Bok team is something special and are now one win away from being crowned World Rugby U20 Championship winners. They face New Zealand in the final on Saturday night. They have played brilliantly at the tournament up to now, recording good wins against Australia, England, Scotland and Argentina, in their semifinal on Monday night. They have been all-powerful up front and full of attacking flair at the back, with several young players showing they have bright futures in South African rugby. It certainly won't be long before the likes of Siphosethu Mnebelele, Bathobele Hlekani, Vusi Moyo, Haashim Pead and a number of others are playing in the United Rugby Championship for the Bulls, Sharks, Lions and Stormers. Rassie Erasmus has built tremendous depth at Springbok level in recent years and he's sure to get an injection of more fire power in the not-too-distant future. SA rugby is in rude health. NWSL expansion team Boston Legacy FC signs Annie Karich, its first player

Boston Legacy FC announced Wednesday the signing of its first player, 21-year-old midfielder Annie Karich. The California native joins Boston as a free agent from SC Freiburg in the Frauen-Bundesliga. Karich's contract will run through the end of the 2027 season with an option to renew for 2028. Boston Legacy will be the 15th team in the National Women's Soccer League, set to begin play in 2026. Advertisement According to the Legacy's press release, Karich is on loan to a Liga MX Femenil club for the rest of the year and will join the NWSL side for preseason in January. 'Annie is a midfielder that brings a unique blend of technical quality and tactical awareness,' Boston Legacy general manager Domè Guasch said of the signing. 'In her time at SC Freiburg, she has also proved her competitiveness and maturity on the field. Annie has the potential to make a real impact in our team.' For SC Freiburg, who finished fifth this season in the German league, Karich made 36 appearances as a defensive midfielder. She's also been a fixture in the U.S. youth national team system, having represented at the U-15, U-17, U-20 and U-23 levels. She was on the roster for the U-20 Women's World Cup in 2022. Karich played collegiate soccer at Santa Clara for two years before moving to Germany. During her time with the Broncos, she started 40 of 41 games, scoring two goals and assisting 10, and was voted the West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2023. Guasch described his approach to recruitment as a search for those with 'the potential to become that next top player.' Once identified, he said his next step is to 'recruit that player and have a head coach that we trust can develop those players.' For Boston, that coach is Filipa Patão, who was named inaugural head coach of the club on June 25. Like Karich, Patão joins the team from Europe. She managed Portuguese giants Benfica for the past five seasons, leading them to a league title each time, and also made history with the club in 2024 as the first Portuguese team to reach the quarterfinals of the women's Champions League. Boston Legacy will debut in the NWSL next season alongside Denver, which has yet to announce its official club name. In light of the recent abolishment of the college and expansion drafts per the new collective bargaining agreement, the league announced a new set of rules and guidelines last month for expansion teams as they build their rosters. NWSL teams can now engage in intra-league loans with player consent, also per the CBA. Boston and Denver will each receive $1,065,000 in allocation money, with half of that amount provided by the league.

Musician 'emotional' after arriving at Glastonbury following 650-mile bike ride

Jack Cullen, who lives in north-west London, embarked on the cycling trip from Edinburgh to the famous festival with his childhood friend George 'GK' Kershaw, 33, on May 30. He told the PA news agency: 'It feels amazing and somewhat emotional in a way. 'I think these things are always, you forget what you're doing during it, and then you realise 'Oh, we've just been doing this for the last month, and now we're here'. 'And it's kind of as simple as that. So it feels, overall, it just feels really, really, really good.' Cullen, 30, said the pair have faced 'horrendous wind and rain' in the past month but joked that his Birkenstocks have held up. Along the route, which took him through areas including the Lake District, Manchester and Liverpool, he performed in quirky venues, including a sauna, and also held an intimate gig for one of his most loyal fans. He told PA: 'We went over to Liverpool, played a little gig, to one fan in particular actually, who always comes to my shows, drives down from Liverpool to London. 'So I cycled four hours to go meet him and play him some of the new tunes face to face. So that was a really, really special one.' While in the Lake District he shot a music video for his new single with RCA Records, All I Need, and said he almost lost a drone and had to hike up a mountain 'for a few hours' to retrieve it. Cullen's friend did not have a ticket for the festival when they set off, but the singer-songwriter says he has now gained entry with the stipulation he must 'do a few bits of work'. Before he embarked on a career in music, Cullen was a professional rugby player and represented Ireland in the U20 World Cup and Six Nations. In 2016, a series of injuries, such as damaging his shoulder and tearing his anterior cruciate ligament, left him bedbound, which is when he picked up his guitar and began writing music. Over time, Cullen began playing his music across the UK and built a fanbase, culminating in more than 20,000 followers on TikTok. He is scheduled to perform at Glastonbury Festival on June 29 at 2.50pm on the Wishing Well stage.
