Collegiate Press Corps to honor top student-athletes in annual awards night
The Collegiate Press Corps, made up of sportswriters covering the collegiate beat, will hold its annual awards night on June 30 with top student-athletes from basketball, volleyball, and, for the first time, football getting their recognitions. Leading the honor roll is the Collegiate Men's and Women's Basketball Player of the Year after successful editions of both NCAA Season 100 and UAAP Season 87 while men's and women's mythical teams will also be handed out awards. Athletes from volleyball will also get their spotlight with UAAP Men's and Women's Volleyball Players of the Year and NCAA Men's and Women's Volleyball Players of the year. In a historic move, the CPC has expanded its recognition to football with top performers in UAAP men's and women's football as well as NCAA men's football getting their due honors. Aside from the players, coaches in both basketball and volleyball will also be acknowledged for steering these young stars to the top. 'We owe it to the student-athletes to continue to glorify their unwavering efforts, with football players in the spotlight this time around. This is our own little way of immortalizing them for what they have done not just for their respective schools, but also for collegiate sports as a whole,' said Collegiate Press Corps (CPC) president John Bryan Ulanday of The Philippine Star. UAAP executive director Atty. Rebo Saguisag, sports director Bo Perasol of UAAP Season 87 host University of the Philippines and management committee board chairman Hercules Callanta of NCAA Season 100 host Lyceum of the Philippines University will serve as guest of honor and speakers. —Bea Micaller/JKC, GMA Integrated News

NU coach Dante Alinsunurin dedicates 5-peat to late brother
National University men's volleyball team longtime mentor Dante Alinsunurin dedicated his most challenging UAAP season campaign yet to his late brother, who passed away last week. Alinsunurin steered the Bulldogs to the league's first five-peat in the Final Four era after taking down Far Eastern University in Game 3 of their championship showdown in the UAAP Season 87 men's volleyball finals on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena. In their past four championship victories, the Bulldogs have never needed more than two games to close out the series, until the top-seeded Tamaraws became a worthy challenger for the crown. 'Unang-una, inaalay ko tong panalo na 'to sa kapatid ko, namatay nu'ng isang linggo,' Alinsunurin said. 'Pangalawa, ang ganda talaga ng series and the other credit goes to FEU, talagang na-challenge nila kami kung hanggang saan [ang kaya namin]. To my players, mula day one, for pushing 'yung sarili nila na makuha namin tong five-peat na to,' he continued. After fighting through the loss of his brother Mike right around the playoffs, Alinsunurin honored him with a special achievement. 'Sobrang thankful talaga ako, hindi lang 'to para sa sarili ko. Para sa kapatid ko 'tong game na 'to. Alam ko na mas matutuwa siya para sa akin pag nakita niyang champion kami,' Alinsunurin said. 'Special itong title kasi kahit may mga struggle kami hindi lang sa laro, kundi sa labas din ng court. Even mga players namin [suffering from] injuries talaga, and ako family matters. Sobrang thankful ako sa panalong to. As of now, ito 'yung pinaka magandang achievement sa career and championship pagdating rito sa UAAP,' he added. In front of a record-high crowd turnout of 14,517, the men's team secured a double gold for the school's volleyball program following an early title celebration for its women's counterpart on Wednesday. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

NU clinches rare fifth straight crown in UAAP men's volleyball
The UAAP men's volleyball crown remains in Jhocson Street. National University won its fifth straight title after sweeping Far Eastern University, 25-16, 28-26, 25-23, in Game 3 of the UAAP Season 87 men's volleyball finals on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena. In the third set, the Tamaraws had a chance to extend the match as they led 17-14, with Dryx Saavedra leading the offense for the Morayta crew. Leo Ordiales and Greg Ancheta eventually tied the set at 17 before Saavedra and Luis Miguel put FEU in front. Buds Buddin's attack, followed by an FEU error, evened the set at 19 before Miguel put the Tamaraws in front as they continued their bid to extend the match. Eventually, the likes of Buddin and Peng Taguibolos stepped up for NU as errors marred FEU's late attempt, helping the Bulldogs to their cause. Ordiales had 13 points from 10 attacks and three blocks, while Taguibolos and Buddin chipped in 10 and nine points, respectively. Leo Aringo, who was named Most Valuable Player of the Finals series, had nine points to go with 10 excellent receptions and four digs. He also had 8.7 points, 11.3 receptions and 4.3 digs in the finals series. The win spoiled Saavedra's 24 point eruption for the Tamaraws. While FEU led in attacks with 43 against 39, errors did not help their attempt as they had 78 against NU's 65. FEU took Game 1 before NU won the next two in the best-of-three series. This is NU's seventh overall title in men's volleyball, with their championship streak dating back to UAAP Season 80 in 2018. Aside from the men's title, NU also reigned in the women's and girls division this season. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
