The Los Angeles Angels chose Tyler Bremner. Second no two. Still, his emotional response made the occasion memorable. One month before, on June 11, Jen Bremner, his mother, died following five years of breast cancer. On Sunday, July 13, the draft event happened; his emotional response rapidly went viral. San Diego, California native Tyler Bremner was surrounded by family when he began weeping, missing mother, J - just a month earlier died. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Tyler Bremner said, 'She came out to all the games, all the way to the point where her body wouldn't let her anymore.' Although he finished the season with a 3.49 ERA, Tyler Bremner became one of the hottest picks late in his college career. According to Baseball America, from April 4 to May 16, he posted a 2.94 ERA and racked up 74 strikeouts. He also became UC Santa Barbara's all-time strikeout leader. Tyler Bremner says he pitched through pain while honoring his late mother Tyler Bremner admitted that he grew stronger as his mother's condition worsened. 'Funny enough, as she got worse, that's when I got stronger on the field,' he told Los Angeles Times. He shared how he used his grief to push harder, saying, 'Pitching angry, or pitching for her, helped me compete.' Why the Angels shocked the sport by selecting Tyler Bremner with the No. 2 pick in MLB Draft
ANAHEIM, Calif. — It wasn't until about an hour before the start of the MLB Draft that Tyler Bremner started to hear rumblings that the Angels might draft him. It was a shock, not just to the UC Santa Barbara right-handed pitcher, but to everyone. Coming into Sunday, there was a host of collegiate pitchers projected to go ahead of Bremner. LSU's Kade Anderson, Tennessee's Liam Doyle, Florida State's Jamie Arnold, to name a few. Advertisement Bremner was on the radar for a first-round selection, but nowhere near No. 2. And when he was picked, his shocked reaction said it all. 'I don't think this was something we really thought was a possibility up until really recently,' Bremner said. 'It was definitely a shock. I'm just overwhelmed with excitement, and ready to get to the next step.' Taking an under-slot value collegiate player, and going over slot for a high school pick later in the draft. They've done it nearly every season with varying levels of success. Then there was the other option. Go with the best player available at No. 2, which might mean selecting a high school position player. They ended up going with the former, but still shocked everyone by taking Bremner. Scouting director Tim McIlvaine said, 'There's a lot you can dream on' with Bremner, signaling a belief he's better than projections have indicated. Ultimately, this decision was still likely rooted in a widely held belief that the top talent of this draft wasn't as elite as most other years. And that created an incentive to sign a player below the $10.25 million slot value, with the hope of adding good players later in the draft. McIlvaine said Bremner would 'not necessarily' sign at below slot value, even though that is largely expected to be the outcome if and when he puts pen to paper. 'We really like Tyler's changeup,' McIlvaine said, noting they conducted an in-person interview at Angel Stadium earlier this month. 'Whenever he's in trouble, he can go to that changeup, and he can get outs with that. We like his fastball a lot. He's 6-foot-4. He's going to put on more weight.' Advertisement For Bremner, this experience transcends slot values or any draft jargon. He celebrated the pick in San Diego alongside friends and family. His mother, Jennifer Bremner, died of cancer in June, and her funeral was held only a week before his selection. This season was a struggle for Bremner, as he navigated his mother's illness. At the end of March, his ERA was 4.24 — a steep regression from his 11-1, 2.54 ERA sophomore season. He said that her worsening condition coincided with his late-season resurgence. He had a 2.91 ERA over his final eight starts. 'I feel like I did a good job of almost using that negative energy and channeling it into pitching,' Bremner said. 'Pitching angry, pitching for her, pitching for something bigger than myself.' His coach at UCSB, Andrew Checketts, said that it was important to support Bremner throughout the season. He wanted to give his ace space, but also wanted to be there to help him deal with an emotionally challenging time. Checketts believes that many of the concerns about Bremner's performance this season are overblown, particularly given everything he was dealing with. And he believes that's why the Angels believed in Bremner's upside, more than some of his sub-par starts this year. 'I felt like the field was somewhere where he could get away a little bit,' Checketts said. 'We didn't talk about it that much, because I think he felt like he was in a place where he had a little relief from the stress. He had to mature and grow fast.' The same will be asked of him with the Angels, a team notorious for fast-tracking their draft picks. Checketts said he believes Bremner has potential as a fast-riser. McIlvaine said he wasn't sure whether or not Bremner would pitch this season, but suggested it was possible he could advance through their system quickly. While his numbers were worse, his strikeout rate went up. He punched out 111 this season. 'Not Friday,' McIlvaine joked, when asked when Bremner might make his big league debut — referring to the team's first game after the All-Star break. 'We're going to bring him in and test him, and make sure everything is good to go with him before we would even consider anything like that. The players dictate their own pace.' Advertisement Regardless, this Angels pick is going to be scrutinized because it came out of nowhere. They could have selected high school infielder Ethan Holliday, largely viewed as the best talent in the draft. They could have taken Anderson, the LSU ace who ended up going No. 3 to Seattle. They could have taken prep stars Billy Carlson or Seth Hernandez, teammates up the road at Corona High School. Instead, they went a route that no one expected. It's unclear if the Angels, under Minasian, would ever actually pick a prep player in the first round. All four of Minasian's first-round picks are in the big leagues, and only one of them took longer than a year to get there. McIlvaine said discussions of a high school pick were had up until the final hours before the draft. But in the end, they followed their annual pattern. For Bremner, the controversy and shock of it don't matter. Now, he can fulfill his dream of playing professional baseball. And do it in Southern California, close to him, and near a family that is celebrating his success, while also mourning a painful loss. 'I know she's watching over me and she's so proud of me,' Bremner said. 'In a weird way, I went to the Angels. It's weird how life works. It's a special moment.'

Bremner dealt with some struggles, throwing in 14 games and 77.1 innings. He struck out 111 hitters and posted a 3.49 ERA. 'Bremner's late-season resurgence may mean he goes higher than this, but the Cubs miss out on Steele Hall in this scenario. His fastball can run up to 98 mph, and according to his changeup is a 65 grade pitch. However, Bremner doesn't have much outside of those two pitches, as his slider didn't show much effectiveness during his final season at UCSB. He had trouble locating his slider in college, and that's a significant issue for a young starter.
