Ex-Everton chief makes James McAtee transfer claim as Juan Roman Riquelme memories evoked

Everton need to make a raft of new signings as they reshape their squad. The fans want it, the manager wants it, and preferably some more new faces will be through the door before the Blues board their aeroplane to the USA next week for the Premier League Summer Series. Although they obviously need to be the right types of players and the right types of deals, the ECHO understands that David Moyes is particularly eager to do some additional business before his squad embark on their transatlantic trip and it was telling that he spoke on this matter after both the signings of Thierno Barry when he said: 'I'm hoping to make more additions in the coming weeks,' and Mark Travers: 'We are continuing to work on bringing in more players ahead of the start of the season.' Indeed, it was also telling that when Idrissa Gueye's new contract was announced, the Scot remarked: 'His experience and his knowledge of the club is going to be so important going forward with the introduction of lots of new players and the new stadium.' READ MORE: New Everton away kit gets unanimous verdict as one Castore feature stands out READ MORE: What Everton dressing room think of Jarrad Branthwaite new contract The deals that Everton have done so far have all been very encouraging but there is still a lot of work to do, so it's probably inevitable in such circumstances that we now seem to find ourselves in the midst of the transfer silly season. Certain agents and media outlets know that speculating that the Blues are in for a certain player seems to be something of a publicity tap-in right now, so separating the wheat from the chaff can often prove difficult. One individual whose name keeps coming back to Everton – along with several other potential suitors – is James McAtee, and it's not just because Alan Ball, arguably the Blues' most-gifted outfield player of the post-war era, was his great uncle. The captain of the England side that secured back-to-back UEFA European Under-21 Championship successes for Goodison Park fan favourite Lee Carsley, the 22-year-old looks like the latest of several talent graduates of Manchester City's academy who might have to move on from the Etihad Stadium to establish themselves. Anyway, McAtee has been spotted in the city, according to a former Everton chief executive. Speaking to Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Keith Wyness, who was CEO at Goodison Park between 2004-09 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs, said: 'We know that there's going to be up to about eight incomings, which is a lot, but I think we're going to see that. I think they're busy. 'I had a very good source of mine tell me that James McAtee was seen at a hotel in Liverpool recently. It's one of those classic stories that you read about all the time, was last seen in a baker's shop near the stadium. 'It did come from a reliable source. So, there may well have been negotiations going on there, and I hope there have been.' Wyness' reference to players being spotted outside the ground brings back memories of Juan Roman Riquelme to Everton, which was the transfer rumour that would not go away during Moyes' first spell as Blues boss in the noughties. Window after window, the attacking midfielder was linked with a move to Everton and whenever deadline day arrived, it was invariably claimed that there had been various sightings of Riquelme across Merseyside, whether it was at John Lennon Airport or coming out of the Hot Wok. Now 47, the San Fernando-born player who is back at his first club Boca Juniors as president having hung up his boots in 2015, only got to play at Goodison once in his career and that was in opposition for Villarreal in a Champions League qualifying round tie in 2005. However, the Riquelme to Everton rumours reached their zenith in July 2007 – on Wyness' watch – when a story appeared on the club's official website on a Monday morning claiming that he was on his way from Spain. The 'news' quickly spread onto Everton forums only for the article to be quickly removed from the Everton website, where a statement appeared claiming the earlier publication was 'completely untrue and appeared as a result of a technical error that occurred during some maintenance work on the site.' A club spokesperson explained: 'During the process of uploading the new home page designs for the website some test data was displayed for a very short period of time and was immediately removed after it had been identified. Example data had been used during the testing process, and this was unfortunately missed by our appointed web development company during the final upload. 'We have since spoken to our suppliers to convey our complete dissatisfaction at the way in which this misinformation appeared, and they have apologised to the club and any Everton supporters who may have may have read the test article.'

West Ham want Elliott and Morton Harvey Elliott and Tyler Morton, too, could be offloaded in order to make space in the budget as well as on the wage bill. Elliott, 22, took a starring role in England's UEFA European Under-21 Championship win earlier this summer. One club now ready to take the plunge on the England pair are West Ham United. West Ham to ramp up summer business Flush with cash from selling Mohammed Kudus to Tottenham, the Hammers need creativity as well as midfield backbone. They are looking towards Anfield for their potential recruits according to the Guardian with another source claiming bids for the Reds' duo will be stepped up this week. 'West Ham are looking to ramp up their summer rebuild with an ambitious move for Liverpool's Harvey Elliott,' the Guardian report states. He was called up to the senior team in January 2020 and made his debut the following month, in a league loss against FC Augsburg. Last summer, he made a move to VfB Stuttgart on a four-year deal. He has a passing accuracy of over 90 per cent and has kept himself out of trouble, conceding zero yellow and red cards. After coming through the Liverpool ranks from a very young age, Quansah made his senior team debut in 2023 and has gone on to make 58 appearances for the Reds, scoring and assisting thrice each. He also won the League Cup twice during this period. GEOVANY QUENDA (Portugal) Portugal's Geovany Quenda came into the tournament as the youngest player of this edition at and age of 18 years, one month and 12 days. ETHAN NWANERI (England) The 18-year-old Hale End graduate has already showcased his on-ball abilities for Arsenal. Primarily an attacking midfielder, he can also operate as a right-winger. Nwaneri possesses a potent left foot, often cutting in from the right wing to curl shots from the edge of the box. Nwaneri has played an important role in England's run to the semifinal so far. He often comes on as a second-half substitute to give an added boost to the attack. For Arsenal, Nwaneri became the youngest player in Premier League history when he came off the bench for Arsenal aged 15 years and 181 days in 2022. In the last season, the Englishman scored nine goals and provided assists for the Gunners in 37 appearances. Having already cemented his place in the Ajax starting lineup, Hato has undeniably lived up to the hype with his impressive displays in Slovakia. His statistics at the tournament speak volumes: he ranks second in both successful tackles (15) and ball recoveries (39), showcasing his defensive prowess and work rate. The versatile 19-year-old, who can seamlessly operate as either a centre-back or left-back, is now attracting significant interest from several top Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Liverpool. Last season, Hato was a pivotal player for Ajax, making 50 appearances for his club and contributing three goals and six assists. HARVEY ELLIOT (England) Harvey Elliot scored twice as England edged past the Netherlands 2-1 to seal its spot in the final. The right-winger has emerged as the Young Lions' talisman in the tournament, scoring and creating chances in clutch moments. The English attacker has lived up to his reputation as one of the most exciting young players in the tournament with five goals in six matches. While the Liverpool player has long been hailed as 'the next big thing,' he has yet to secure a regular starting spot in the Merseyside club's line-up. Last season, Elliot scored five and registered three assists in 28 appearances. However, the 22-year-old only made six starts in the Reds' triumphant Premier League campaign. His superb display has sparked interest in the transfer market as several Premier League clubs are reportedly looking to prise him away from Anfield. Mathys Tel Joins Tottenham Hotspur On Permanent Deal Till 2031

Tottenham Hotspur have signed forward Mathys Tel on a permanent deal till 2031, the Premier League club announced on Sunday. Mathys joined Hotspur from the Bundesliga side in February on loan until the end of the season with an option to make the move permanent. He made his debut for the club as a substitute against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup before marking his first start with a goal against Aston Villa in the FA Cup. His first Premier League strike came from the penalty spot in a 3-1 win over Southampton in April. The versatile forward made 20 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring 3 goals. Mathys is currently representing France at the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, alongside fellow Spurs teammate Wilson Odobert. "Mathys Tel came to FC Bayern as a very young player and mastered his first steps at the top level of European football here," Bayern's head of sport Max Eberl said in a statement. "He was a popular figure in the squad, who always gave his all for the club and the team. The move to Tottenham has turned out to be the right one for his development." The 20-year-old joined Bayern Munich from Stade Rennes in 2022 on a four-year contract, later extending his deal until 2029 in March last year. He has scored 16 goals in 83 appearances for the German club but has found it difficult to secure a regular spot in the starting lineup. He now becomes the first signing under new head coach Thomas Frank, who was appointed on Friday following the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou.
