Germany's Kathrin Hendrich Red-Carded for Hair-Pulling in Euro Quarterfinal

A player was sent off at the Women's European Championship for pulling an opponent's hair, six days after a similar incident during the Club World Cup final. The Video Assistant Referee spotted Germany midfielder Kathrin Hendrich yanking the ponytail of France captain Griedge Mbock as a free kick was floated into the area. With less than 13 minutes played, Hendrich was shown a red card and moments later Grace Geyoro converted the resulting penalty to give France a 1-0 lead in Saturday's quarterfinal. It was a somewhat unusual red card but the second such incident in the space of less than a week. Paris Saint-Germain midfielder João Neves was sent off for pulling down Marc Cucurella by his hair, towards the end of Chelsea's 3-0 victory in the trophy match of the Club World Cup last Sunday. Euro 2025: Spain Ends Switzerland's Spirited Run Despite Penalty Kick Woes

Spain ended hosts Switzerland's dreamy midsummer run through the 2025 UEFA Women's Euro in a 2-0 win in the quarterfinals on Friday despite missing two penalty kicks. Swiss resistance was broken by the world champion's two goals in a five-minute spell midway through the second half. Athenea Del Castillo slotted in a shot from Aitana Bonmatí's flicked assist in the 66th, just four minutes after coming off the bench, and Clàudia Pina curled a shot from the edge of the penalty area in the 71st. Spain will play France or Germany in the semifinals next Wednesday in Zurich. The winner will face defending champion England or Italy in the July 27 final at St. Jakob-Park, Basel. Spain has a tournament-leading 16 goals yet could not score from the spot. Mariona Caldentey skewed her penalty badly wide in the ninth minute and Alexia Putellas' shot was saved by Livia Peng in the 88th. Switzerland's spirited young team gave its noisy home fans hope of a stunning upset, even more so after Caldentey's bad miss was greeted by a grateful roar by the sold-out Wankdorf Stadium. Spain also struck the posts of Switzerland's goal three times including in back-to-back chances in a frantic scramble at a corner in the 60th. Switzerland defender Noelle Maritz was sent off in stoppage time for a foul. Spain has reached the semifinals for the first time since 1997. It lost to the Swiss in the quarterfinals at Euro 2022, played in England. Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? UEFA Women's Euro 2025: England Stages Dramatic Comeback To Beat Sweden In Penalties

Defending champion England staged a remarkable late recovery from two goals down to take its quarterfinal against Sweden to extra time and win in penalties on Thursday at the UEFA Women's Euro 2025. England had been trailing almost from the start after Kosovare Asllani fired Sweden in front with less than two minutes on the clock and Stina Blackstenius doubled Sweden's lead in the 25th. With 12 minutes remaining, England looked set to be heading for an early exit. It would have been the first time the Lionesses had failed to reach the semifinals of a major tournament since 2013. However, substitute Chloe Kelly had an immediate impact with two wonderful crosses leading to two goals in the space of two minutes — from Lucy Bronze and teenage substitute Michelle Agyemang. England completed its miraculous comeback in a back-and-forth penalty shootout, which ended with Sweden defender Smilla Holmberg skying her penalty. England is the first team to come back from a 2-0 defecit and win in UEFA Women's Euros history. England will face Italy in the semifinal in Geneva on Tuesday. Spain Star Aitana Bonmatí Says She's Mentally Stronger After Hospital Stay

Spain's opponents at the Women's European Championship won't want to hear Aitana Bonmatí say she is even better as a player after her recent spell in the hospital, but she is. Bonmatí said Thursday she is feeling "100 percent physically" on the eve of a quarterfinal game against host Switzerland that will be exactly three weeks since she was hospitalized with viral meningitis. "I think this new Aitana is even stronger mentally with the same ambitions," the two-time defending Ballon d'Or winner said in translated comments. "I reminded myself [of] who I am. I feel very well. … I'm glad to be here." Bonmatí was treated in a Madrid hospital before traveling to Switzerland one day later than the rest of the world champion and tournament favorite's squad. "I was frustrated," she said at the pregame news conference at the stadium in Bern. "I suffered, I must admit. It was five days before the start of the tournament. What happened was unexpected. I felt super well, physically I was perfect, but I never thought I wouldn't be here." [MORE: Euro 2025: Spain On Track? Watch Out For France? What Stood Out and What's Next] Bonmatí was even well enough to enter from the bench on the second day of Euro 2025, in the 81st minute of Spain's 5-0 win over Portugal. She came on for the second half of the 6-2 win against Belgium, when the score was 2-1. She played the full game in a 3-1 win over Italy, ensuring Spain finished top of its group. The team tied the tournament record of scoring 14 goals in the opening phase. "I am happy because the team was super good," Bonmatí said. "We played an excellent tournament and now the best part is coming." Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Poland Beats Denmark 3-2 for First Women's European Championship Win

Natalia Padilla scored one goal and set up the others for Poland's first Women's European Championship win, 3-2 over Denmark in their final group game on Saturday. Poland is appearing in the tournament for the first time and the Spanish-born Padilla got the country's first goal when she opened the scoring in the 13th minute, pouncing on a rebound to fire past Maja Bay Østergaard after Ewa Pajor's initial effort was blocked at the right post. Padilla then crossed for Pajor to head in the second in the 20th. Denmark suffered another blow five minutes later when captain Pernille Harder went off with what looked like a hamstring injury. Denmark was already without Emma Snerle, who suffered a head injury during Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Germany. Denmark players paused during their pre-game warmup to pose with Snerle's jersey, while Danish fans also displayed a large banner wishing her well. Denmark pulled one back through Janni Thomsen before the hour-mark when Kinga Szemik let her long-range effort slip through her fingers. Martyna Wiankowska scored Poland's third against the run of play in the 76th when Padilla's attempted shot from Pajor's cross turned into a layoff for the substitute to fire in off the underside of the crossbar. Forward Signe Bruun finally got her goal in the 83rd, setting up a nervy finale, but Poland held on for a momentous win. Neither team had any hope of emerging from Group C after losing their opening games. Sweden defeated Germany 4-1 in the other match to top the group. Reporting by The Associated Press.
