Consistent shortage of trained nurses in Punjab hospitals

LAHORE: The Chief Minister Punjab Monitoring Team's head, Brigadier Babar Alauddin (retd), visited the University of Health Sciences (UHS) on Tuesday where he held meetings with vice-chancellor Prof Dr Ahsan Waheed Rathore and senior faculty members. During the visit, he was briefed on the university's academic, research and public health initiatives. Brigadier Alauddin (retd) termed the Punjab government's recent decision to centralize admissions to nursing colleges through UHS a 'wise step,' noting that it would promote merit, transparency, and quality education. He disclosed that during his inspections of more than 100 hospitals over the past year, he found a consistent shortage of trained nurses. In that context, he praised UHS's contribution to strengthening standards in nursing education. Commenting on UHS's adolescent health awareness programme Pyari Beti, he called it a commendable initiative for empowering young girls. 'This programme deserves integration into the primary healthcare system, and I will brief the Chief Minister accordingly,' he added. He also discussed the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT), expressing strong personal support for its continuation as a standardised entry examination. He highlighted the need for an effective and coordinated regulatory framework for monitoring private medical colleges, citing recurring complaints about their academic standards. The vice-chancellor Prof Rathore informed the delegation that a crackdown on substandard nursing colleges was already underway. 'In future, only those institutions with a minimum 200-bed teaching hospital will be accredited,' he said. Brigadier Alauddin reiterated that healthcare remains a top priority for the Chief Minister. He noted that Punjab's Basic Health Units (BHUs) and Rural Health Centres (RHCs) were being revitalised and outsourced to the private sector to improve service delivery. Despite serving a significant patient load from across provincial borders, Punjab's public health system continues to deliver, he added. Praising UHS's distinctive role among national regulators, he said that the university's challenges and its societal impact are unique and vital. He also acknowledged the ongoing efforts to improve the international ranking of Pakistani universities. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

UHS launches life-saving skills training workshops for medical faculty

LAHORE: The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has launched a series of life-saving skills workshops aimed at capacity building of faculty members of medical colleges in order to train medical students across Punjab. The first in a series of six workshops focused on Cardiac First Response (CFR) and Basic Life Support (BLS) was held at the university's Jinnah Campus on Tuesday, with 20 participants from medical colleges and teaching hospitals of Lahore. The inaugural session of the workshop was chaired by UHS Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nadia Naseem, who welcomed the participants and emphasized the vital role of life-saving skills in healthcare education. 'These workshops are now an integral part of our revised curricula. Every health professional will be equipped with the skills to respond in emergencies,' she said, adding: 'This step was essential in producing competent graduates who can make a real difference in patients' lives.' Professors, assistant professors and senior registrars from nine different colleges and hospitals participated in the training, which is part of a 'Master Trainer' series. These trainers will later be responsible for certifying MBBS, BDS, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Allied Health Sciences students under the Life Savers Initiative, developed in collaboration with the National Ambulance Service College (NASC) of Ireland. Speaking through a video link, UHS vice-chancellor Prof. Dr. Ahsan Waheed Rathore underlined the need to reform the medical education landscape in Pakistan. 'We need to change the culture. There must be a 'shout for health' across our institutions,' he said, adding: 'These six skills-based workshops will not only impart essential knowledge but also ensure that our students graduate with hands-on training in saving lives.' 50,000 people visit three-day ‘Sasya Santhe'

The three-day 'Sasya Santhe' (plant fair) organised by Regional Horticulture Research and Extension Centre, University of Horticultural Sciences(UHS) on GKVK Campus came to an end on Sunday. The fair saw a participation of around 50,000 people. The fourth edition of the event was inaugurated on July 11. Speaking at the valedictory ceremony on Sunday, Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda urged people to become more conscious of environmental conservation. 'The environment always satisfies human needs and desires, but if we all understand that we should not exploit it beyond that for our greed, then that will be our small contribution to environmental conservation. UHS has organised this Sasya Santhe to create this awareness and plant concern in our minds about the environment. Coming here and checking out stalls and buying plants is not enough and we should all care about the environment. We see weather events like flash floods, drought, landslides and the problems caused by rain year on year. If these problems persist, then the lives of our children will be difficult. Hence, for their benefit, we should make conscious efforts to conserve the environment,' the Minister said. There were more than 100 stalls that were set up in the fair selling various kinds of fruit, flower and ornamental saplings along with plantation, medicinal plants and vegetable seeds. Vishnuvardhana, Vice-Chancellor of UHS Bagalakote delivered the presidential remarks and said, 'In the next few days, we will launch a mega nursery on the UHS GKVK campus in Bengaluru where all kinds of quality seedlings, grafted plants, seeds, accessories, biofertlisers etc will be made available under a single roof. We will also provide training on urban horticulture, vertical gardening, terrace gardening, kitchen gardening, mushroom production etc.'

Minister reviews preparations for heavy rains

LAHORE: Punjab Minister for Health and Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Disaster Management, Khawaja Salman Rafique chaired a meeting here on Friday, to review preparations for the expected heavy rainfall. Additional Director General PDMA, Syed Jawad Haider briefed the meeting that heavy showers are likely to begin on Sunday night, with this year's monsoon rainfall is expected to be 25 percent above normal. The Provincial Minister directed authorities to ensure swift drainage of rainwater from low-lying areas and stressed that all available resources will be deployed to safeguard the public during the rainy spell. Moreover, the four-day haematology training course organised by the University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore was concluded Friday with a certificate distribution ceremony. Addressing the ceremony, the vice- chancellor underscored the urgent need to restore clinical credibility through structured training and improved diagnostic practices. Prof. Dr. Ahsan Waheed Rathore emphasized the critical need to regain lost credibility in clinical and laboratory practice. 'Even correct interpretation of a Complete Blood Count (CBC) report is often overlooked by professionals. Skills that should be embedded in our professional programs are conspicuously absent,' he remarked and said, 'We have restructured our MPhil and PhD programs to be time-bound and competency-driven. Our focus now is to build faculties in various disciplines and ensure consistent academic activity that contributes to stronger professional communities." Head of UHS Haematology department, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Asif Naveed, shared plans to make such focused training a regular feature at UHS. 'We envision future sessions to explore even finer details of Haematology,' he said adding that there's a strong case for standalone modules. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
