HSBC Egypt, EBCC and UK Export Finance host high-level Investment, Infrastructure Forum in Cairo
HSBC Egypt, in collaboration with the Egyptian-British Chamber of Commerce (EBCC) and UK Export Finance (UKEF), proudly hosted the EBCC-HSBC-UKEF Investment and Infrastructure Forum at its Head Office in Cairo. The forum served as a strategic highlight of the broader EBCC-Department for Business and Trade (DBT) infrastructure mission to Egypt which included nearly 20 UK-based companies. This high-level event brought together key decision-makers and stakeholders from the UK and Egypt, including senior representatives from the government including Walid Gamal Eldin the Chairperson of the Suez Canal Economic Zone, international investors, and the private sector, to unlock investment and collaboration opportunities across Egypt's evolving infrastructure landscape. Commenting on the event, Todd Wilcox HSBC Egypt Deputy Chairperson and CEO said, 'Egypt is taking bold steps to position itself as a regional business hub, through economic reform and investment in sustainable infrastructure. Hosting this forum is part of our continued effort to catalyze strategic partnerships that support Egypt's transformation. By connecting investors with high-potential opportunities, we aim to accelerate progress toward a more sustainable and resilient economy.' The discussion focused on several high-impact sectors vital to Egypt's infrastructure development, including clean and renewable energy, digital infrastructure and waste management. Attention was also given to the opportunities in nearshore manufacturing aimed at export markets to support economic growth. Mohanad Khaled, EBCC Chairperson added, 'We are delighted to work alongside HSBC and UK Export Finance to bring UK-Egypt relations to the forefront of infrastructure investment. Forums like this are vital for building bridges between markets, industries, and policymakers. We would also like to thank the UK Department of Business and Trade and the British Embassy in Cairo for their partnership on the mission to Egypt.' 'UK Export Finance is proud to support British companies in delivering high-quality solutions to Egypt's infrastructure ambitions. Through this collaboration with HSBC and EBCC, we are enabling projects that have both commercial and developmental impact,' said Mohamed Saad, Country Head of Egypt and Algeria, UKEF. In addition to panel discussions, the forum featured curated business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-government (B2G) meetings, offering direct engagement opportunities to facilitate actionable partnerships and commercial outcomes.

Moon Hall Cairo Opens June 15 as Egypt's First Centre for Learning Difficulties
Egypt's first dedicated centre for learning difficulties, Moon Hall Cairo, will open on June 15. The launch includes an educational workshop featuring UK and local specialists, aimed at raising awareness and introducing the centre's services. The facility is located within the New Giza Educational Hub and has been developed in partnership with Moon Hall School UK, a British institution specialising in support for students with dyslexia and related conditions. The project was first announced in London in September 2024. Moon Hall Cairo will provide services including: Speech and language therapy Occupational therapy Support for dyslexia Assessments for ADHD and autism Educational psychology Programmes for gifted students The centre is staffed by a multidisciplinary team using internationally recognised methods, adjusted for the local context. The opening follows a collaboration agreement signed last year during a UK-Egypt trade mission, hosted at the Egyptian Embassy in London and attended by British and Egyptian officials. The initiative is part of broader education partnerships led by New Era Education, which has also launched other UK-affiliated institutions in Egypt, including Uppingham Cairo and the upcoming King's School Canterbury International College. Moon Hall Cairo's website will also launch on June 15, offering more details about available services.

UK Announces £7.5 Mln Medical Aid for Gaza
Israa Farhan The United Kingdom has pledged an additional £7.5 million in medical aid to support civilians in Gaza, as part of its ongoing response to the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region. The initiative, led by the British Minister for the Middle East, Hamish Falconer, aims to strengthen emergency healthcare services for those affected by the conflict. As part of this support package, £1 million will be directed to the World Health Organization in Egypt to assist the Egyptian government in providing treatment to patients medically evacuated from Gaza. This funding will help supply critical medical equipment, rehabilitation tools, and essential medications. The latest pledge builds on a previous £1 million contribution announced in October 2023, which enhanced UK-Egypt cooperation in delivering humanitarian support to Gaza. The new package is designed to improve the capacity of Egyptian health facilities to accommodate the increasing number of evacuees in need of urgent care. The British government emphasized that the ongoing collapse of Gaza's healthcare system has left thousands of civilians without access to essential medical treatment. The additional funding is intended to help bridge that gap, ensuring that life-saving care is available to the most vulnerable. The UK also confirmed a contribution of £1.5 million to UK-Med, a British medical NGO, to sustain the operation of its two field hospitals in Gaza. These facilities, located in Deir al-Balah and Al-Mawasi, have provided healthcare services to over 410,000 patients since the onset of hostilities. The hospitals offer surgical care, maternal health services, rehabilitation, and general medical treatment. In a further show of support, the UK has allocated £5 million to the UN's Humanitarian Fund for the Occupied Palestinian Territory. This funding will support critical projects focused on health, water, sanitation, food security, protection, and shelter for civilians in Gaza. Two children from Gaza recently arrived in the United Kingdom for specialized medical care, funded by the UK-based charity Project Pure Hope. The British government has facilitated logistical support for this initiative, underscoring its broader commitment to humanitarian efforts in the region. According to the British Embassy in Cairo, Egypt has received the highest number of medical evacuees from Gaza, with patients treated across 170 hospitals in 24 provinces. Sustaining transnational education - Egypt - Al-Ahram Weekly
Reem Leila reviews the findings of a recent report on the sustainability of transnational education in Egypt, Qatar, and the UAE Egypt leads the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in transnational education (TNE) enrolment in UK universities with 28,000 students in 2022-23. A report issued last week examined the sustainability of TNE in Egypt, Qatar, and the UAE. Conducted in collaboration with institutions in the three countries, the report highlighted the distinctive dynamics of TNE. 'Due to economic and currency challenges, more Egyptian students are likely to opt for studying in Egypt rather than going abroad,' the report said. The UAE follows Egypt closely with regards to TNE enrolment in UK universities with 22,000 students and Qatar with 3,000. Egypt is committed to developing the country's educational institutions so that it coincides with global standards, both in terms of infrastructure as well as curriculum development, to enhance the academic and research landscape in Egypt, the rest of the Middle East and Africa, Mustafa Refaat, secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Universities (SCU), told participants at the launch event. Speaking on behalf of Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Ayman Ashour, Refaat highlighted the success and significant impact of international university branches in Egypt, saying they have played a key role in transforming the higher education system by implementing standards of research, innovation, and academic excellence. 'The transformations the world is witnessing require the development of capabilities and adaptive skills to keep pace with global market demands,' Refaat explained. The efforts of the SCU, Refaat said, enabled the provision of diverse educational opportunities, developing an internationalisation strategy, and expanding scholarship programmes. According to the report, the UAE leads in postgraduate TNE enrolments, with a significant demand for flexible delivery options. Qatar, though with fewer students, shows the highest proportion of online-flexible enrolments, indicating a strong preference for flexible models among postgraduate TNE students across all three countries. The report also introduced a framework for the sustainability of TNE, built on five key pillars: mutual benefits, financial feasibility, inclusivity and depth of partnerships, leadership and human resource development, and mutual trust and communication. 'This framework provides practical insights for institutions aiming to build sustainable partnerships that align with regional development priorities,' the report said. At the event, British Ambassador to Egypt Gareth Bayley said the UK Higher Education Mission in Egypt reflects his country's commitment to strengthening educational partnerships and technological collaboration with Egypt. Bayley also expressed his support for UK-Egypt educational partnerships which, he said, contribute to creating a thriving academic environment for future generations.
