UAE and Pakistan hold political consultations in Abu Dhabi
The United Arab Emirates and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan convened the second round of political consultations in Abu Dhabi. The session was co-chaired by Reem Ketait, Deputy Assistant Minister for Political Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Shehryar Akbar Khan, Additional Foreign Secretary at Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The consultations were preceded by a high-level meeting between Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, as part of the 12th session of the UAE-Pakistan Joint Ministerial Commission, held in Abu Dhabi. During the Political Consultations, both sides highlighted the enduring strength of the bilateral relationship. They reflected on recent high-level visits, and welcomed the ongoing growth of economic ties, with non-oil trade surpassing $8.6 billion in 2024. The two sides exchanged assessments on key regional developments, including the situation in the Middle East, and recent discussions at the United Nations Security Council. In this context, the UAE welcomed Pakistan's active role as a non-permanent member of the Council and was briefed on Pakistan's preparations for its forthcoming presidency of the Council in July 2025. Both sides underscored the value of continued coordination on Security Council matters and reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing peace, stability, and constructive solutions to regional challenges. In the multilateral arena, they reviewed the two countries' close cooperation in ensuring the success of the 2026 UN Water Conference, which will be co-hosted by the UAE and Senegal. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining regular consultations in order to advance common objectives for the mutual benefit of their peoples. The consultations included the attendance of Hamad Obaid Alzaabi, the UAE Ambassador to Pakistan, and Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, Pakistan's Ambassador to the UAE, among other officials from both sides. WAM

AI among key sectors unlocked in new UAE-Canada partnerships
The UAE and Canada will expand cooperation in several key sectors, including artificial intelligence, trade and energy. It follows UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan's official visit to Canada last week, where he held talks with Canada's Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The two sides emphasised the need for responsible and inclusive AI development, welcoming "ongoing dialogue between institutions and stakeholders to explore cooperation" to support "innovation and economic growth". The two sides also announced the launch of Dubai Chambers' first North American office in Toronto, intended to strengthen economic ties and foster new opportunities for trade and investment. They also reviewed the ongoing work of the Canada-UAE Business Council and existing partnerships between DP World and Caisse de Depot et Placement du Quebec (CDPQ). Discussions also continued towards concluding a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA). On climate and water issues, the two nations reaffirmed their commitment to addressing global water challenges, with a focus on technological innovation and collaboration in the lead-up to the 2026 UN Water Conference, which the UAE will co-host. Energy cooperation also featured prominently, with both countries agreeing to deepen collaboration in clean energy, decarbonisation and mineral development. In discussions on peace and security, Canada and the UAE called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages and unhindered humanitarian aid access. Both governments reiterated their support for a two-state solution, condemned extremism and hate speech and stressed the importance of diplomacy and respect for international law in resolving regional conflicts. Canada also acknowledged the UAE's humanitarian leadership, particularly in Gaza and Ukraine, including its role in aid delivery and prisoner-of-war mediation. The two nations reaffirmed their shared commitment to international development, humanitarian assistance, and long-term conflict resolution rooted in human dignity and inclusive political processes. People-to-people ties were highlighted as a foundation of the bilateral relationship. Canada welcomed the growing number of Emirati students in Canadian universities, while the UAE recognised the contributions of more than 60,000 Canadians living and working in the Emirates. The two sides also celebrated ongoing cultural exchanges, including the 'As the Sun Appears from Beyond' exhibition presented in Toronto in collaboration with the Aga Khan Museum.

Department of Energy – Abu Dhabi, Global Climate Finance Centre sign MoU on energy, water efficiency, climate finance
29 May 2025 17:00 ABU DHABI (WAM)The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Global Climate Finance Centre (GCFC).The agreement was signed during the 2025 World Utilities Congress, at a high-level consultation co-convened by the DoE and GCFC in preparation for the 2026 United Nations Water Conference. GCFC has been formally mandated to lead the Finance Track of the agreement was witnessed by Dr. Abdulla Humaid Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Department of Energy (DoE), and Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and memorandum was signed by Ahmed Al Falasi, Energy Efficiency Sector Executive Director, and Mercedes Vela Monserrate CEO of GCFC, in the presence of several directors and senior officials from both this occasion, Ahmed Al Falasi, Energy Efficiency Sector Executive Director, stated, 'This agreement represents a strategic milestone in our ongoing efforts to drive the transition toward a sustainable economic model that helps address climate change challenges. We recognise the importance of activating partnerships with leading institutions such as the Global Climate Finance Centre, given their pivotal role in enhancing our capacity to develop pioneering projects and enabling innovative and flexible financing solutions that benefit both the economy and society.'He added, 'We look forward to implementing high-impact initiatives through this collaboration, starting with supporting projects such as 'Cooling as a Service', and moving toward building an effective ecosystem that includes government entities, the private sector, and the community at large.''As we look ahead to the 2026 UN Water Conference, which the UAE will co-host, we are committed to deepening partnerships that deliver measurable progress and scalable innovation in energy and water efficiency, in line with our national priorities.'Mercedes Vela Monserrate, CEO of GCFC, stated, 'This agreement reflects the work already underway between GCFC and the Department of Energy to develop financing mechanisms for energy and water efficiency. It also aims to build institutional capacities, exchange knowledge and information, and scale financing for energy and water efficiency projects, including behavioral change and environmental conservation MoU outlines specific areas of cooperation, including: Development of financing instruments for energy and water efficiency infrastructure; Capital structuring tools such as guarantees, linked loans, and bond frameworks; Technical support and capacity-building for regulators, project developers, and financial institutions; Policy and regulatory alignment to support investment-readiness; High-level convenings to support pipeline development and institutional coordination. GCFC and the DoE will also work together to align financing solutions with Abu Dhabi's strategic priorities and help position the Emirate as a regional leader in climate finance.

UAE ship carrying desalination plants arrives in Cyprus
A UAE ship carrying water desalination plants arrived at Limassol Port in Cyprus on Thursday, to provide clean drinking water and support sustainable global water security. The shipment included 14 desalination units based on Reverse Osmosis technology, with a production capacity of up to 15,000 cubic metres per day (3.3 million gallons daily), converting seawater into potable water. The UAE will also provide technical assistance by training engineers and workers on the installation and operation of the plants, thereby enhancing Cyprus's capacity to address water-related challenges. Sultan Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Development and International Organisations and Vice Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, said, 'This initiative demonstrates the robust relations between the UAE and Cyprus, and reflects the UAE's commitment to enhancing international cooperation in the field of water security while providing innovative solutions to global water-related challenges.' He reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to addressing the issue of water scarcity, highlighting the UAE's launch of the 'Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative' and the country's upcoming role as co-host of the 2026 UN Water Conference, alongside Senegal.
