2025 USA Diving American Cup held at Mylan Park

MORGANTOWN, (WBOY) — Thirty-nine competitors across six countries came to Morgantown on Thursday to kick off the 2025 USA Diving American Cup at Mylan Park, where the best divers compete for spots in other international meets later in the year. Among the competitors are 16 Americans, eight female and eight male, who represent some of the best divers in the United States. The 2025 American Cup will have four days of competitions, and officially kicked off Thursday. The events on Thursday and Friday are preliminary competitions, where the athletes aim to make the finals, which will be held on Saturday and Sunday. During the finals, the top 12 competitors will face off for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place positions, and from there, they'll look to move on to some other international competitions or national competitions for their respective home countries. According to National Events Manager Michael Retcher, the Morgantown Aquatic Center has been home to many USA Diving national meets over the past few years, adding that the hospitality they've experienced there has been incredible. 'This is a world-class facility, truly, that is well-known amongst our athletes and the diving community,' he said. Power Up 2025 Conference looks to help small businesses in Morgantown Retcher also said that Visit Mountaineer Country and Peak Health Aquatic Center have been great partners with USA Diving, which is why the organization keeps coming back to hold competitions in Morgantown. 'The people, the experience here that we've had at our national-level events is awesome,' he said. 'Now we're showing the world on the international stage how awesome Morgantown, West Virginia, is and what a great job they do.' According to Retcher, international meets like this one can provide the first opportunity, and at other times additional opportunities, to get experience on the international stage. He also said that although there are U.S. athletes competing at this event, competitors in this international cup are trying to get experience to compete in the World Aquatics Championships and hopefully secure a spot in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. USA Diving wants to pack the stands throughout the duration of the 2025 USA Diving American Cup, and they encourage people in the Greater Morgantown Area to stop by. 'You don't have to know a thing about diving, you don't have to have ever seen diving before,' Retcher added. 'But it is so much fun to be here—to be up close and personal watching these divers, and it's just really an electric event.' Tickets for the event can be purchased online via Mylan Park's website. There, you can find a full event schedule for the coming days and also find information about volunteer opportunities. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Teen phenom ElliReese Niday competing for Team USA at American Cup meet at Mylan Park

MORGANTOWN — A portion of the world's top divers will be on display in Morgantown, competing in the USA Diving American Cup, held at the Peak Health Aquatic Center at Mylan Park. One already has Olympic aspirations even though she's still three years shy of getting her driver's license. ElliReese Niday, 13, made headlines last month in Alabama by becoming one of the youngest national champions in history when she won the women's 10-meter title at the USA Diving Championships. 'It's really crazy,' Niday said, according to USA Diving. 'Maybe one day when I grow up, I'll make the Olympic team possibly.' Niday, from Moultrie, Ga., is the daughter of former Tennessee standout Lauryn McCalley Niday, who won national titles in 2000 and 2001 on the 3-meter springboard. The younger Niday has quickly made her own name in the sport, winning three gold medals at the 2023 Junior Pan American Championships, as well as being a seven-time junior national champion. The four-day event begins at 10 a.m. Thursday with preliminary rounds in the men's 3-meter and the women's 10-meter. Niday is scheduled to begin 10-meter preliminaries at 11:45 a.m. on Thursday. Along with members of Team USA, divers from Japan, Australia, Canada and Korea will be competing in the international event. More preliminary rounds are scheduled for Friday, with finals in individual and synchronized events beginning Saturday and concluding Sunday. 'This is an incredible opportunity for our community to witness Olympic-caliber diving right here in Morgantown,' said Jennifer Lainhart, Director of Aquatics and Track at Mylan Park. 'Hosting athletes from around the world not only showcases the capability of our facility, but it brings global excitement to our region.' Other headliners competing for Team USA in Morgantown include former TCU standout Anna Kwong, who won the 1-meter title at the USA Diving Championships. She'll be competing in the 3-meter individuals, along with Sophie Verzyl, who finished fifth in the event at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials. The combo will also be competing together in the synchronized 3-meter competition. On the men's side, Carson Tyler took fourth in the 2024 Olympics in the 3-meters and will be competing in that event in Morgantown. Indiana's Josh Hedberg was once the top-ranked high school diver in the country and he won the 10-meter title last month at the USA Diving Championships. Hedberg will be competing in the 10-meters this weekend and will double up with Tyler in the synchronized 10-meter competition. 'The American Cup is a tremendous opportunity for divers from around the world to represent their countries and compete on an international stage,' said Lee Michaud, President of USA Diving. 'We're thrilled to welcome everyone to Morgantown and to once again experience the world-class facilities and incredible hospitality that Visit Mountaineer Country and the Peak Health Aquatic Center provide.'

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — ElliReese Niday became one of the youngest champions ever when she won the women's 10-meter title Thursday at the USA Diving national championships. The 13-year-old from Moultrie, Georgia, scored 721.40 points to beat Texas sophomore Bayleigh Cranford by 10 points. 'It doesn't feel real,' Niday said. 'I just tried to stay focused on my own dives and celebrate after.' She's the youngest American diver to win a senior national title in an individual event since 2016, when former Olympian Hailey Hernandez won a 3-meter title at the same age. 'It's really crazy,' Niday said. 'Maybe one day when I grow up, I'll make the Olympic team possibly.' She led after the semifinals, when she had three dives score over 80 points. Her inward 2 1/2 pike earned perfect 10s from three judges at the meet in Auburn, Alabama. Semifinal scores carried over to the final. On Thursday, Niday scored over 80 points on two of her five dives. Niday finished fifth at last year's winter nationals. She's a seven-time junior national champion and won three gold medals at the 2023 Junior Pan American Championships. Niday's mother, Lauryn McCalley Niday, was a standout diver at Tennessee and won national titles in 2000 and 2001 on 3-meter springboard. ___ AP Olympics at
